[Scene opens up in a cafe]
Cafe Ambience Sfx
[Weeks after a particularly steamy night with your "boyfriend". He asks you out on a date at the cafe opened nearby. You dont know whats going on in his mind and maybe you're about to find out]
[You're sitting in the cafe he told you to arrive at, youre a bit early. You hear the jingle of the cafe entrance and see your "boyfriend"]
[He approaches you with a big smile and open arms, you get up and you both share a hug]
"Hey darling, come here"
[You both share a hug]
"Mmm...yeah hello beautiful how you doing~"
"Nuu whats the rush...youre warm..."
"haha ok i know we can do this later..."
[he pulls up the chair and settles down]
"if i oh darling, I always behave, you make me wanna misbehave~"
"Alright fine baby, youre the boss. Jeez what are you doing to me, I never usually listened to any of my dates, but here you are the most innocent, harmless person and youve got me wrapped around your finger, not that i mind"
[pause] "See i told you, walking home from school with me would be fun. We always come up with new topics to talk on. It really took a while for me convince your parents, that youre safe with me..."
"Oh dear no, your dad is really sweet, scary but sweet. i get it why they are protective of you, if you were my kid, i would be too"
"I mean, i dont have to be your parent for you to call me daddy~"
"pfft ahaha! look at that blush on your face! ha priceless~"
"Oh darling you werent so shy that night when you were bouncing on top of me~" [pause!!]
"ok ok im sorry...so cute..."
"Hmm? why i always hold your bag on the way home from school? well because i want to take care of you"
'Yes darling Im aware that youre very much capable of taking care of yourself but i just want to show you that im genuine about you and i really wanna take care of you..."
[he holds your hand]
"Yes dear...i know you've been through rough times in the past...because of that...Kyle..."
[…..] "Yes, I did beat him up...and his goons too, i took help from our dear football team because you know the captain is my best friend and a plus, they don't like Kyle and his friends either~"
"Yes, it was necessary, you told me about him cheating...it was still alright I wouldn't have done anything to him just because you were holding me back but then after the night when we slept together you told me that he..."
[You can sense him getting angry as he's squeezing your hand tighter]
"that he forced you to sleep with him...blackmailed so you won't tell...made you feel like you're helpless against him...made you feel like you desperately need him or you wont survive...made you feel bad about your figure to the point that you started to starve yourself and then ended up in a hospital...
[he lets out a frustrated sigh...]
"Baby let me tell you this...you don't need anyone...not even me...usually people are not able to face the person who have caused them such harm but you...you defended me against this asshole."
[he let out a small laugh]
"Yeah, he was so taken aback when you snapped you finger at him like he was damn guard dog and threatened him."
"Oh yeah OfCourse it was just a friendly warning, it made me shiver to see you like that, not scared more like turned on."
[you both share a laugh]
"What I am trying to say is that you're strong...you don't have to be depended on anyone at all...i do all that so that I can comfort you baby..."
"I'm glad we see eye to eye dear."
"you're welcome darling"
"Why did I called you here out of the blue? well..."
[he takes a deep breath]
"Darling...we've been allegedly together for quite a while... it's been almost a month...honestly i treasure every second of time spent together and I don't want this to end..."
[pause...?] "My dear prince...I love you and I wanna be your boyfriend...i want everyone to know that I'm yours and you're mine..."
"If you don't want this then I'm alright with that.... will never force you to be with me or force you to do anything at all...i will even leave you alone if you want me to-"
[you stand up from your seat and walk towards him]
"darling...? what are you- Uh!?
[you sit on his lap]
"uhh...my my little prince arent you getting bold...so what is your answer..."
[you cup his cheeks and pull him in a deep kiss. You dont care if the whole cafe is looking at you. You both know what you want and you both desperately want each other]
[you pull away from a very deep and wet kiss]
"well...damn...ill take that as a yes my dear...hehe damn i never thought ill confess to anyone its usually the other way around, not that im complaining..."
[he kisses your forehead]
"I will never ever hurt you and will forever respect you and your decisions...i love you...
"Yeah you wanna get outta here and continue this at my place?"
"sweet let go"
[you take his hand and get out of there]
[scene transitions to Elijah's place]
im aware my parents caught us and gave me an earful but dont worry they went to my grandparents' house for the weekend so dont worry and youve already charmed them so if they find you here i dont think they will be mad or anything, especially my mom...jeez she didnt stopped asking about you every time during dinner when i get back home"
"Yeah your parents like me too? wow i thought your father would be a little skeptic about me...but it better than them hating me so ill bite"
"oh i remind your mom of your dad i see...no wonder shes really fond of me..."
"oh really...your dad was your mom's bodyguard? Now that's adorable"
"now enough talking come here"
[he pulls your hand and pins you to the wall]
"i wanted to pin you down as soon as you sat on my lap in that cafe, we wouldve had our first exhibitionism moment in there you tease~"
"oh yeah you are i see the way you grind against me when i embrace you from behind~"
[he picks you up princess style]
"let me do all the work my prince."
[he kisses you all the way to his bedroom]
[he throws you on the bed and kisses you deeply from your lips to your neck]
"you better be ready to bounce again cause i wont go easy on you today my little prince~"
[<3] "you better be ready to bounce again cause i wont go easy on you today my little prince~"
[he kisses you as you melt under him...there is no other place you wanna be any more, just wanna be tangled with this tattooed pile of muscles and never wanna be untangled, as he keeps on chanting 'I love you' and 'youre perfect' so there is not a spite of doubt in you about yourself or your love for each other]
Note: finally i finished it...have been working on this for quite some time hope you all enjoy<3

2023.06.09 19:36 queenofthescreen [Thank You] Heavenly Homemade Honeys @ u/KatDuq (Goddess of Glamour, Generosity, & Gorgeous Creativity)
This is LOVE! https://imgur.com/a/Pe0Mj8j u/KatDuq
x 6 A wordy girl was rendered speechless. Stunned. Stupified. AGHAST at your terrific talent! And although the most commonly used definition of “aghast” is “filled with sudden fright or horror”, I mean “aghast” as in “struck with overwhelming shock or amazement”. You took my breath away with the most magnificent, majestic, seriously King Charles royal mail I have ever seen or received. Words will fail to describe what you did for me with this beaming beauty! Oddly, I received it just a few days ago - international mail typically finds me late (the birthday horoscope mail I actually received ages ago, but it was held hostage in some fabulously fun family drama that I just described in a meta post).
May as well thank you here for the lovely birthday horoscope card here - thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I was giddy to see how much you had written in this card. That takes a lot of love - how much you cared about enlightening me was so very evident! What was super cool is that your resource is so in-depth & didn’t churn out the generic birthday horoscope stuff I’ve seen in the past (because I find this topic super interesting). I really loved the insights & inspiration you gave me to accept multiple goals. Because I do find myself distracted by varying goals & you comforted me so much in explaining that it’s totally fine to have them all. Your card inspired me to embrace the crazy challenges in my life & to learn from them - you gave me a new sense of strength to cope with challenges - thank you so much!!! Thank you also for the precious parakeet birthday wishes mini card!!
BACK TO THE NEW LOVE OF MY PRETTY PAPER-OBSESSED LIFE ;)
So when I received this ethereal gift from a creative goddess, I had no idea what was in it but just the *envelope* was so pretty I had to go wash my hands LOL! And I had just washed them minutes prior. The soothing blue color of the envelope & the adorable happy mail themed washi tape gave me such a sense of calm & tranquility. And then when I opened it - I had no idea what to expect as I had forgotten about my request. But I totally FLIPPED over this otherworldly gift!!!! I hesitate to call it a “junk journal envelope” because it is so charmingly celestial & the absolute opposite of junk. So what do YOU call it, my fancy friend?
Everything about it is an absolutely amazing fancy feast for the eyes. And I was incredibly sad because of the drama I mentioned so I can’t even fully express what you did for me with your terrifically thoughtful gift on the day I received it. I have actually tinkered around with some informal junk journal creations at library classes (using manilla envelopes), but the merry **majestic*** (I have to use this word again, because it’s so royal & regal) magic you unleashed elevated the art journaling game to another level. As a mere amateur, I was so creatively inspired by you & your talent! I have so much to learn. And you taught me that aiming for elegance & class takes time, thought, & lots of reflection. I’m warning you in advance - my future mail to you will NOT be worthy of you hahaha but I’ll want to send some basic, humble sunshine your way asap! ;)
Everything about this sweetie just radiates fanciful flowers & sweet sunshine! It was incredible to me how even though I’ve never had the pleasure of speaking to you or meeting you, the core of your sugary essence came through with this one envelope. Your generosity, your thoughtfulness, your incredible kindness, your attention to detail, your infinite creativity, your intelligence/emotional IQ, your inquisitive & adventurous nature, your extraordinary elegance, exquisite tastes for the fabulously fancy n’ fine, what a glamorous creature you are, & your heavenly heart! Somehow, you even exuded compassion without knowing anything about me - does that even make sense? I can’t even articulate what this mail did for me as a beautiful balm to heal the silly worldly wounds of my heart.
When I opened the creation, I just stared at it for ages before basking in the hidden gems. Just looking at it made me feel so special. And I felt like it was too beautiful, too perfectly pretty to touch hahaha! I was floored by so many aspects of your charming craft architecture!!!! How you blended both the modern & the classic; your royal choice in soothing color schemes (the lilac, sea green, baby blue, classic white, varying shades of the prettiest pinks, etc. - WOW this is such a gorgeous color combo!!!); the lush lace; the wonderful word-riddled background paper; the perfect placement of the lovely scrapbooking paper dancing with so many creative elements on the cover; your flippin’ fancy taste in ephemera - everything was just WOW!!!! I find it hard to believe I will ever again see anything so fine & fancy in my life LOL! I also loved how you blended the use of so many nifty paper goodies like the classic stickers, modern stickers, gorgeous memo sheets & fun mini cards, travel boarding pass (OMG to-die-for cuuuuuute!!!), vintage ad ephemera, the luscious lilac bookmark with such an elegant look & texture, the *adorable* jam card, the fanciest paperclip ever - this floral delight - wow; the most gorgeous gift tags I have ever seen, & so much more! I was also filled with glee that with your awesome dictionary card, you taught me the coolest word I have learned in ages: Tinselry (noun)[tin-sull-ree] Definition: glittering or gaudy decoration
I was so excited to learn this cool new word!!! But then I was heartbroken that I couldn’t use this fun word to describe your creation. Because wow - this homemade honey glitters gorgeously - but it sure isn’t the other ‘g’ word from the definition, which I can’t even use in the same sentence with any reference to your creation hahaha! But I can’t wait to frou-frou up any conversation with this fun new word - thank you!!!
As I luxuriated in your creativity, I felt as if I was unpacking one glorious gift box after another! It was a truly delicious, delightful experience. You generated so much intrigue & wonder with your cheery charming creation! As I reveled in the joy I felt in the blessing of your awesome gift, all I could think is that I would LOVE to see your home hahaha - I can’t even begin to imagine how dreamy your place is, if this sweetie is this incredibly beautiful! And then I also wondered what words would do you & your love justice in a mere thank-you. All I can say is - thank you for gifting me your heart, hope, joy, comfort, creativity, compassion, warmth, wonder, luminous light, & love with your sublime gift. May the sunshine you’ve gifted me multiply a zillionfold & return to you. Wishing you happiness in all its forms, my kind friend.

2023.06.09 07:16 ilovebooseungkwan Gone with the Rain
I'm watching this show on Viki so there are only 6 episodes out- but wow ! I am impressed with how the story is playing out so far.
There are two FLs in this show. Moxi and Fengyao, and they are cousins. Moxi, who seems to be the focus of the story, was born from a low class mother and is treated harshly by her aunt and uncle. Although because of this, Moxi is very intelligent. Fengyao on the other hand is a little more sheltered but she cares about Moxi very much. Both of these girls would lie and scheme their way to protect each other.
In this universe, there is a war going on. Honestly I'm not sure which side is the good side (if there even is one), but the MLs are on different sides of the war. From this premise, you could kind of guess how this story will play out.
Reading the comments on MDL, it seems like the show is deviating from the book it's based on which it seems like a good thing. One difference is that the ML Chen WenDe is a lot more likable and nicer in the show than the book.
I'll say- if you decide to watch this show, just know that the first like 5-10 minutes is the FL daydreaming and after you get past that part, the show gets a lot better.
What's really the selling point for me is the characters and how they interact with each other. Moxi is smart, charming, and is extremely protective of Fengyao. I really enjoy watching Zhang Nan (actress of Moxi)- and she has a lot of chemistry with all of the MLs as well.
It's also interesting that Chen WenDe is such a vague character. As in you can't really tell if he's bad or not. It gives me the vibes of the emperor in Story of Yanxi. Like as much as I kinda didn't like him- he was also pretty charismatic.
On the other hand, Wan JiaGui (the other ML) is the type of character that you know is 'good'. He's educated, from a good family, a soldier- It's just really cool to see all these different types of people interact in the ways they do.
I'm really excited to see how this story progresses and I hope more people will check it out as well !
Also ! I'm not sure which era this show takes place in but Moxi's clothes look so comfortable .

2023.06.09 00:05 TheShiftingParadigm Chapter 7-The New Best Friend Squad Arc Part 3- Sea-Worthy Smash
Surrounded by Kazari, Finn, Iyexi and Archer, Maila faced her mom, the majestic Mermista. Exhaustion veiled Mermista's features. Being a mom was a hard job, especially when one of your kids was a manchild named Seahawk.
"So, like, what's up, mom?" Maila blurted, hands on her hips.
With a hand massaging her temples, Mermista began, "Okay, so, my spies tell me there's this weird cache box thingy floating around in the open sea. It's, like, radiating some strange vibes."
"So, I guess you want us to go play detective, huh?" Maila's voice dripped with sarcasm.
Mermista let out a long, tired sigh. "Maila, you're gonna be queen one day. Your dad and I thought this would be good for you. You know, learning on the job?" Mermista fetched a pair of keys and lobbed them towards Maila.
"Take the Dragon's Daughter 7. Try to forget that you’re half-Seahawk and don’t fuck this up, okay?"
Maila caught the keys mid-air, stuck her tongue out at her mom. "Well, mom, that snarkiness is why dad scores higher on my favorite parent scale!"
Mermista retaliated by launching her trident at her, missing by miles.
"Haha, missed, bitch!"
"Just scram before I break your neck!" The Open Sea
Maila was in her element on the Dragon’s Daughter 7, feeling like she ruled the world. "Yay!" she screamed, her voice swallowed by the ocean breeze. Kazari leaned lazily against the railing, idly swirling sparks of havok magic between her fingers. “So,” she began, “has your mother been a moody bitch-canou?”
Maila chuckled lightly, “Yeah, but she’s still pretty cool. She once made sure Finn’s trauma isn’t worse than it is…” she droned.
Kazari furrowed her brow, the magicat’s head tilted slightly.
“Trauma? Maila, what the fuck are you-?”
Maila pointed to the other magicat, Finn, curled up in the fetal position, while Archer and Iyexi were doing their best to confront them. “Finn, just relax, okay?” said Archer.
“We got you, buddy!” Iyexi held Finn’s hand.
“Finn?” Kazari approached her fellow magicat. “Are you okay?” she asked, her aussie accent softened over the years.
Finn looked up at Kazari, saying, “Y-yeah, I will be once we finish this damn mission!”
"Don't sweat it, Finn! You can have a good sob with your moms once we're done!" Kazari jested, a glint of mischief in her eyes.
"Actually, I can't really be around my moms at the moment…"
"Wow, way to rain on the fun parade..." Kazari responded, her teasing tone deflating a bit.
Maila was busy fiddling with a radar when a blip appeared on the screen. "Hey, guys, I think we've got a hit!"
Everyone rose from their spots and huddled around the mermaid-pirate princess. There it was, the cache box, several feet beneath them.
"Alright, looks like this box is tucked away in a sea cave! Kazari, I could use your help hauling this thing, it seems pretty hefty. Your havoc magic should do the trick," she explained, handing out wetsuits to the team.
Kazari merely nodded, stripping down to her underwear, leaving Finn blushing like a ripe tomato. Kazari didn't miss a beat, she winked at the flustered magicat, taunting, “Guess you've hit the jackpot, tiger. Snap a picture, it'll last longer,” before wriggling into her wetsuit, and the others followed her lead.
One by one, everyone dived into the azure depths with the only expectation being Finn who said, “You guys go ahead, I’ll…stay back and watch the boat…”
Maila shot them an empathetic look as she dived in. Maila's seafoam green jacket melted around her legs, which fused into an aquamarine fish tail.
"Alright, stay close," Maila directed, speeding off into the depths with the rest of the team in her wake.
Kazari lagged slightly, swimming alongside Archer and Iyexi. She asked, "What's up with Finn? They seem off-kilter."
"Finn has a thing about water, but it's their story to share, not ours," Iyexi replied, a serious undertone in her voice. Kazari simply nodded in response, understanding the sentiment.
As they neared the cave entrance, Maila called out, "We're here. Kazari, you're up with me."
“Got it,” Kazari replied, swimming up to join Maila at the cave's entrance. The other two hung back slightly, providing cover and watching out for any surprises.
The underwater cave was darker than the surrounding sea, its entrance guarded by a mess of coral and sea plants swaying lazily in the current. Maila and Kazari had to maneuver carefully to avoid disturbing the fragile underwater life. Once past the entrance, they turned on the small lights attached to their suits, illuminating the gloomy interior.
The water inside the cave was cooler and eerily still, reflecting the beams of their lights in strange, distorted patterns on the rough cave walls. They advanced slowly, the silence broken only by the sound of their own breathing and the occasional crackle from their comms devices.
There it was, nestled among an outcropping of rocks, the cache box. Its metallic surface was half-buried in the sand and encrusted with layers of marine life, making it seem more like a part of the cave than an alien object.
Maila signaled to Kazari, pointing towards the box. With a determined nod, Kazari conjured her havoc magic. The sparks danced around her arms and core before reaching out towards the box, lifting it gently from its bed of sand and rocks.
Just when they thought everything was going smoothly, Kazari's eyes widened at a pattern she spotted. It was unmistakably similar to those cursed spiders they had encountered before.
"What the hell?" Kazari blurted out.
"Kazari, what's up?!" Archer and Iyexi's voices crackled through the comms, their concern palpable.
Maila followed Kazari's gaze just in time to see the sand beneath them begin to swirl and shift. "Guys, we need to move, now! We're not alone down here!"
Before they could react, the ocean floor erupted in a cloud of sand and debris. As the dust cleared, a massive, monstrous squid revealed itself.
"HOLY SHIT!!!" Iyexi's exclamation was barely audible over the chaos.
"We have to secure the box!" Maila commanded, doing her best to keep her cool in the face of the terrifying creature. As the squid lunged at them, they swam as fast as they could, the cache box in tow. Their hearts pounded in their chests, the adrenaline fueling their swift escape.
Through gritted teeth, Kazari shouted, "Alright, I'll keep the squid busy, you guys secure the box!"
Without wasting any more time, they all lunged forward, each grabbing a corner of the cache box. Maila, thanks to her mermaid physiology, found the task easier. A mermaid's strength is volumetric - directly proportional to the amount of water in contact with her body. In the vastness of the open sea, Maila was easily the strongest among them.
As they struggled with the box, Kazari swam headfirst into the fray. Her aim was to distract the gigantic squid long enough for the others to make their escape. It was a dangerous plan, but it was all they had. With a deep breath, she charged towards the monstrous creature, ready to face it head-on.
With a determined look, Kazari summoned her havok magic. Electricity crackled around her, creating an impressive, almost mesmerizing display. It felt like pins and needles pricking her scalp, but she had to ignore it. And just as she hoped, the squid turned its focus to her, tentacles lunging in her direction.
Seizing her moment, Kazari pushed off the cave wall, dodging the squirming tentacles with agile precision. She swam underneath the box and latched onto Maila’s tail, swimming swiftly to join the group.
"Archer, teleport us out of here, now!" Kazari's voice was firm, carrying the urgency of their predicament. They needed to get out, and they needed to do it fast. Archer did just that, warping the four, and the box onto the boat, in front of a perplexed Finn.
"Are you serious?!" Finn's voice echoed through the communication devices as the crew scampered back onto the Dragon's Daughter 7. Maila made a beeline for the console, revving up the ship's engines and steering them away from the underwater chaos.
Minutes later, when they were safely away from the giant squid and the adrenaline had started to wane, Finn repeated their earlier question, this time more slowly, "Can somebody please tell me what the FUCK just happened?"
Maila, steadying her breath, managed to give them a succinct answer: "Giant squid. But we did get the cache box!" She hoped that her words carried some reassurance. Despite the unexpected challenges, they'd succeeded in their mission.
“Welp, in any case, let’s crack this fucker open,” said Kazari.
Wanting to contribute, Finn popped out their claws and broke off the lock. Inside the box, were all aging weapons: an armcannon, a trident, a set of power boosting gloves, bow and arrows and a short sword and sheath.
At first, their faces reflected nothing but underwhelmed surprise. This was what they had risked their lives for? A bunch of old, worn-out weapons? But then, the realization dawned on them. These pieces were more than just weapons…
"Guys! If I'm not totally off-base here, these weapons... they look like they were crafted by the First Ones," Maila announced, her eyes wide with realization.
"The First Ones, you say?" Iyexi mused, carefully picking up the armcannon. "Well, in that case, they might actually be of use to us."
Archer nodded, his hands running over the bow and arrows. He sensed the age and craftsmanship in the simple tools. Meanwhile, Finn took hold of the gloves, inspecting them with a quiet curiosity.
As for Maila, she found herself gravitating towards the trident, a sense of familiarity washing over her. Kazari, on the other hand, chose the tanto and its sheath, a certain fondness evident in her gaze.
"Well, regardless of where they came from, they're definitely going to give us a boost for shop class," Finn commented, breaking the momentary silence. "So, at least there's that, right? Right, Kazari? Uh, Kazari?"
They all turned to look at Kazari, who seemed to be in a sort of trance. Her gaze was fixated on a rock outside the ship's window, where an unusual, smoky blob was swirling around… Later that night…
Alone in the quiet of her dorm room, Kazari found herself captivated by the aged sword she had claimed earlier. It had an undeniable charm, a feeling of history that was too intriguing to ignore. With the sword resting in her lap, Kazari leaned back in her chair, her sketchbook splayed open on her desk.
Her pencil danced across the page, guided by her hand as she poured her thoughts into a flurry of lines and shapes. But there was one shape, one image, that kept resurfacing in her mind. The smoky blob she had seen swirling around the rock.
"What is that thing I keep seeing?" she wondered aloud, her gaze flicking back and forth between her sword and her sketchbook. "What is it trying to show me?" As the night deepened, Kazari found herself lost in her thoughts, her curiosity piqued by the mystery of the swirling smoke and the sword.

2023.06.08 22:42 SkinnyTinkles I work as a lawyer. My latest client was an immortal with their soul on the line...
Now, I work in a relatively small town, pretty far from any major city, so I'm not taking on any newsworthy cases, and my clients aren't usually offering me the big bucks for my services. So, you can imagine my surprise when, yesterday morning, a client walked in carrying two heavy-looking sacks, sat down in front of me, and opened one of the sacks to reveal money. A lot of it.
Even more surprising was the fact the client was a young girl, who couldn't have been more than seventeen. Now, you can understand why I was already more than a bit skeptical, then she told me she was immortal and needed my help in changing that.
No sooner than I had awkwardly laughed, she interrupted me and made my jaw drop.
"I was Tommy O'Malley. Mr. O'Malley to you, back when I taught you mathematics for a few years in the early nineteen-eighties."
I was a bit confused now. I did have a Mr. O'Malley teaching me back when I was a teenager, I remember him mostly for being strict and for excessively mean. I noticed that the teenage girl had the same blonde hair and green eyes that he had. Perhaps they were relatives and this was some sort of prank? That would be a bit strange though, considering that I had heard about Mr. O Malley's death a little under a month ago.
I was trying to rationalize this in my head, but her next statement blindsided me.
"Near the end of the school year, your first year at the school, I kept you behind and yelled at you, saying you wouldn't be half the lawyer that your father was if you kept skipping classes and failing tests. You then started crying."
Wow. Yeah, I suppose Mr. O'Malley was a mean old man, but I can't see him telling that charming tale to his granddaughter so she could play a prank on me, not least after he was dead for almost a month. Now, I wasn't really convinced that old Mr. O'Malley had reincarnated as this teenage girl, but I definitely wanted to know more.
"OK, let's say you're immortal. Why are you here?"
"I was given this curse in the summer of 1641. I was only in my twenties, perhaps my early-thirties, yet I had fallen ill. I was coughing up blood for over a week and I knew I hadn't long left. One night, I sat down by a river feeling sorry for myself."
Now, this teenage girl had just told me that she's been around since the 17th century, but something about the sincerity and regret in what she spoke about had me drawn in. I've never been one to deny the existence of the supernatural, but I was still wary, so I let her continue speaking.
"I was lamenting that I had done nothing and my life was being cut short before my hair had gone completely gray. I had no wife, no children, and I was far from wealthy. Then I spotted him. Across the river, a man wearing rags, humming a tune, until he looked up at me."
The young girls tone of voice was one of anger, of hate, but her eyes looked fearful.
"He asked me what had me in such a foul mood on such a fine night. I grumbled that it was very apparent I was dying, and that was when he grinned, a terrible, wretched smile. He stepped across the river, and the water froze under his feet, and a cold chill went up my spine."
"He offered you immortality?" I asked, in response to her silence.
"I asked him what the cost was, to which he told me that I would find out, should I accept his offer."
"And what was the cost?" I found myself whispering.
"After I shook his hand and he walked into the forest, I expected for my sickness to go away, but I began coughing up even more blood, until I died, a little under three days later. But I awoke, feeling healthier than I had in weeks. I got out of bed, walked to a river flowing past outside, and found that the reflection I saw wasn't my own."
"And who's was it?"
"Mary. A girl I had shared a brief romance with when I was younger, but she was married off and moved to another part of the country with a richer man. My consciousness had replaced hers, and I had to resume her life. It was a miracle I wasn't thrown into a sanitorium by her husband for acting strangely, but he wasn't very attentive, let alone present most of the time."
"That's lucky, I think."
"Then I died for a second time a decade later from pneumonia, and awoke in the body of Mary's, or my, son. Then, forty years later, I died for a third time, waking up in the body of his, or my, son, twenty years later in the body of his, or my best friend. I was reincarnating as the people I cared about most. Whatever I made a deal with had played a cruel trick on me. This brand of immortality is worse than death"
"Got more than you bargained for, there." I mumbled, still trying to figure out if I believed her or not. On one hand, the whole idea was crazy. On the other hand, I was pretty convinced, plus she had a sack of money.
"So why'd you come to me? And why's it worth that big stash of cash?" I asked.
"Last I was Tommy O'Malley. I'd been Tommy O'Malley since he was a toddler. I'd got a good teaching job, but stupidly I had a kid. I abandoned him before he turned five. I foolishly hoped I could save him from the consequences of my wish. So I became a recluse. Only showing up to work."
"Were you being a mean old fella in case you'd wind up getting attached to any of us?" I laughed, but stopped after the young girl glared at me, and I swear it was the same glare Mr. O'Malley would give us when we talked in class.
She continued "But, then in 2008, my son came to see me. I don't know how he didn't hate me, but he said he wanted his kids to meet their grandpa. I should've turned him down, but I had gotten lonely, and little Kelly melted my heart."
I realized where this was going, and let her continue.
"Three weeks ago, Tommy O'Malley, that is to say, me, died in his sleep. I woke up as Kelly at around two in the morning, and ran to the edge of town crying. Then I saw him again. The man who granted my wish. I began swearing like a sailor at him, then he spoke."
"Immortality not all as you imagined it? That's alright. Meet me one month from now, at the river we first met. I can take back your wish, but it'll cost you."
Kelly stared at the floor and said "I'm can't let him have my soul, but my immortality needs to end, otherwise I might end up reincarnating as one of Tommy's grandchildren, or my siblings, I suppose."
I understood. I had to raise my daughter all by myself, I wouldn't be able to stand the thought of her soul being kicked out of her body. Still, Kelly was asking a lot of me.
I responded "You think my time at law school will help you cut a better deal with some demon? I'm a little out of my depth in that regard."
She opened the second sack to reveal books, scrolls, some printed documents and sharply said "These are some recorded instances of a guy who sounds like my curse-giver. Learn what you can, and remember, I'm paying you a pretty big portion of the money I earned as Tommy. Meet me tomorrow night."
With that, she left, carrying the money bag. I'm in my fifties now, I shouldn't be buying this, but somehow I was convinced, whether it be by the apparent sincerity of Kelly, or Mr. O'Malley, or whoever, or the money, I quickly turned my attention to the documents she had.
Let me tell you, these seemed more like fairy tales and urban legends, but I couldn't stop reading. All the tales originate from the same region, and involve our boy taking advantage of those who are on the verge of death. It always takes the form of a man with long black hair, wearing rags, with glassy eyes and an unnerving grin. Seriously, there was a real creepy old drawing of him included.
Before I knew it, it was dark outside. I read the last document, containing the coordinates, as well as a note saying to be there tomorrow at midnight.
I tried to sleep, but I kept seeing that old timey drawing of a blind young man with a sinister smile. The day went quickly, and soon I left to visit the destination. I was starting to believe this more and more, but the pay was better than what I was used to, so I arrived, and found Kelly with the money.
"Did you figure anything out?" she whispered.
"I've a hunch that the people whose bodies you hijacked, it has their souls now."
Tears began falling from Kelly's eyes, but they suddenly widened. I heard a humming from across the river, and it sent a shiver down my spine. A man in rags, with long hair began crossing the river.
"Did you find another way?" Kelly frantically asked.
"I'm sorry, but for the sake of your family, I think you'll have to let it take your soul."
"There's another way. I'm so sorry." she sobbed, then the blind young man put its hand on her shoulder.
I watched in horror as the life left her body immediately, yet she had a smile on her face, as she began to turn to dust and blow away in the wind.
"Shame. A soul that's been around for a few hundred years would've satisfied me greatly. But, I'm nothing if not patient, and I suppose you're an investment. How's it feel to be immortal, pal?"
"No. No. Oh no." I stuttered as I ran back to my car, hearing the young blind man chuckling quietly.
That was last night. I've been coughing up blood all day. I worry for my daughter's soul.

2023.06.08 14:58 CaspianX2 Daily Dadish for Nintendo Switch - Review
: Platformer Players
: 1, Online Leaderboards
Daily Dadish, like the first three games in the Dadish series, is a Platformer. Released on PC and Nintendo Switch in 2023, this is a game once again has players take the role of an anthropomorphic radish who needs to run through the game’s levels to collect all of his errant kids. And… actually for once this series is trying something new and different, though “new” and “different” doesn’t always mean “good”.
This game uses simple, colorful pixel art visuals with a lot of little references to the Mario series, with transitions and transition sounds just like those in Super Mario Bros. 3, and a jump sound like in Super Mario World, to name a few. These are backed by a cheerful synthesized soundtrack that’s actually pretty catchy this time around, with catchy tunes like Gangalo Jungle
and Pulvujo Desert
. There are also nice little animations throughout while still retaining the series’ wonderful charm, including even more fourth wall-breaking dialogue Dadish has with his kids at the end of each level and... hey, wait a minute.. this game is literally just reusing all of the visuals and music from Dadish 3
! Wow, even for a series that threatens to be far too samey, this is pretty lazy, guys.
Despite the visual and audio references to the Mario series, Dadish doesn’t play much like Mario. Each level is more of an obstacle course, occasionally with some light puzzle elements. The gameplay mechanics are fairly straightforward here too - Dadish can jump and double-jump, and can push boxes… and that’s really about it.
The big new gimmick this time is that Daily Dadish has a different level each day of the year, and that level can only be accessed on that day. Technically, this means that the game has 365 unique levels... but this also means that once you’ve played your day’s level, that’s it... there’s nothing more to play until the next day. What’s worse, you can’t even play prior levels either, not even after completing them. Furthermore, because the game can’t predict when players are starting the game, there’s no way for the game to have any sort of difficulty progression, making for gameplay that starts out pretty difficult and largely stays at that level. What’s even worse, the game refuses to even start up unless you’re connected to the internet!
I’ll give Daily Dadish credit for trying something unique and different, but the way it not only parcels out its content with a daily drip-drip-drip of each new level, but also refuses to allow players to go back to prior levels is really absurd, and the way the game just reuses all the assets from Dadish 3 is even more so. As a result, this game is one that only the biggest fans of this series will enjoy, and even then they’ll likely be frustrated at this game’s problems. tl;dr – Daily Dadish, like the first three games in the series, is a Platformer about a dad radish on a journey to collect his errant kids. Unfortunately, this game copy-pastes the presentation of Dadish 3, and while its “one level per day” concept is intriguing, this ultimately results in a drip-feed of content that’s stifling, ruins the difficulty curve, and forces players to play the game online. Unless you are a die-hard fan of this series, this is a game to skip. In fact, even if you are a series fan, you’ll likely be disappointed with this game.

2023.06.08 06:21 hijesushere Just some regular old, not weird in any way song lyrics that I noticed in a couple of my favorite songs... I'm gathering evidence...
Lyrics in songs I've noticed.
Oh hey! In the same dream
It kept calling us
Wonderland beyond distant memories
We we we strong, nothing missing
Wake up, the answer is Simple
Be Boss, blow the Whistle
The bigger world is noticing you.
Shall we have a festival? I hold your hand.
We've been waiting for this moment. Spread your wings and be yourself.
Come play at My carnival.
Climax? It starts now.
Watch out! We are making the rules.
It’s now or never, we got forever. Sappy
You're sobbing and being pessimistic
You're hesitating again, you can't choose
Writing poems in your note, your hobby is sentimental
Look, now it's time to open the door
Tell me, which do you love?
It's not bad thing to dream
It's not a fairytale, it's the real world
What are you gonna do? Which one are you
Reality or fantasy, adolescent boy?
I'm still clearing dating simulation games
using the manual
I'm still a long way from real love
It's not that I don't like it
Escape from being just two-dimensional
Which one do you love?
Tonight let me know your true feelings
You'll really grow up then
Tell me, which one do you love?
(In the video the lyrics are "Logging out from delusion" for a part of it.)
That's not even getting into the imagery in the video.
Feel My Rhythm
Blowing up this fancy ball
We're back, cute chaotic delight
This is gonna be a crazy night
Epic appearance to stunning greetings
Let's have a little fun
Don't be shy, Bae bae
Let the play start
(Birds and wings everywhere in the video. Irene is shown offering strawberries to a gigantic statue of some sort which then falls towards her. Joy is seen standing in front of some type of being with wings, I can't tell what it would be though. Maybe one of us? Cant tell, she's, yeah she's blocking the shot)
Now cruising into a weird, new dimension
A place I've never imagined appears unexpectedly
Don't miss this moment, baby.
Don't confine yourself to yesterday or tomorrow.
I'm truly free right now.
Come ride with me (Sway)
Let's go anywhere (Way)
I want to mess all the boundaries
In this world (Oh yeah)
When the world stops What a what a feeling Come take my hand (All right) A brand new Film We falling deep, You and I Next time, spin the clock Where should we go? Come on, let's start again You and I
You used to be afraid of the dark night (ah yeah yeah) Hiding without anyone else knowing (ah yeah yeah) No one say happy ending You stayed silent and ran away (Here we go Here we go like)...
Knock Knock There’s a monster It’s growing larger, the black hole inside of you When you back uh? The howler has swallowed you, that’s the killer Don’t be afraid, hold my hand Your past is making you scared But know your power For the final time, be first You know that I come first I’m the winner winner winner Yes, it’s the last melody To save save save you (so don’t keep) Don’t be deceived by the lie That there is no light in this world Together we will Dream a dream that’s never been seen before Dream a dream that’s never been seen before (Ya) It’s ok if you fall (stand up) It’s you (hands up) Faster Stronger Better Gotta be the best Between night and day, around 5:30AM A war without loyalty will suffocate you, this is a foul Lies, darkness, truth, ecstasy, fantasy My candle makes you explode like a fireworks of melodies in the dawn Don’t be afraid, hold my hand Your past is making you scared But know your power For the final time, be first You know that I come first I’m the winner winner winner Yes, it’s the last melody To save save save you (so don’t keep) Don’t be deceived by the lie That there is no light in this world Together we will Dream a dream that’s never been seen before I’m breaking down the walls, crossing the lines I won’t shrivel up, I’ll jump over one step You got me now got me now two step Don’t slow it down slow it down Shout towards the sky that comes to you Hold onto the key of hope...
Bon bon chocolate
go up to the sky .
Hate to twist your mind, but God ain't on your side
Flesh is burning, you can smell it in the air 'Cause men like you have such an easy soul to steal (steal) So stand in line while they ink numbers in your head You're now a slave until the end of time here Nothing stops the madness turning Haunting, yearning, pull the trigger You should've known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah Ooh, it's your fuckin' nightmare While your nightmare comes to life
You've been lied to just to rape you of your sight And now they have the nerve to tell you how to feel (feel) So sedated as they medicate your brain And while you slowly go insane they tell you Given with the best intentions Help you with your complications
You should've known the price of evil And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah No one to call, everybody to fear Your tragic fate is lookin' so clear, yeah Ooh, it's your fuckin' nightmare Ha, ha, ha, ha
And I know you hear their voices (calling from above) And I know they may seem real (these signals of love) But our life's made up of choices (some without appeal) They took for granted your soul And it's ours now to steal As your nightmare comes to life
Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you've seen So unsure but it seems, 'cause we've been waiting for you Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste Of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway
A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain Can leave this place but refrain, 'cause we've been waiting for you Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste Of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway This piece on Earth's not right (with my back against the wall) No pain or sign of time (I'm much too young to fall) So out of place, don't wanna stay, I feel wrong and that's my sign I've made up my mind Give me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye Please, understand I have to leave and carry on my own life
Standing in the shade of altruism, answering the call Came a modern messiah to save us all Something far beyond the work of fiction, Positronic brain A world that's void of all the anguish and suffering, pain
We're creating god, master of our designs We're creating god, unsure of what we'll find
Never held a high regard for Darwin, selection takes too long A little kick in the pool shouldn't do us wrong Devouring the very last invention man would ever need But exponential growth is a frightening thing, indeed
Sometimes when I look up to the sky I have to wonder are we "summoning the demon" you and I?
Have you noticed that I'm needin' it more now, more than it needs me Got a couple of billion that seem to agree Surfing in an artificial dimension, but we're not alone Now the master has become just a stepping stone, oh
We're Creating, God.
Beast and the Harlot
This shining city built of gold A far cry from innocence There's more than meets the eye around here Look to the waters of the deep A city of evil There sat a seven headed beast Ten horns raised from his head Symbolic woman sits on his throne But hatred strips her and leaves her naked The beast and the harlot
The city dressed in jewels and gold Fine linen, myrrh and pearls Her plagues will come all at once As her mourners watch her burn Destroyed in an hour Merchants and captains of the world Sailors navigators too Will weep and mourn this loss With her sins piled to the sky The beast and the harlot
The day has come for all our sinners If you're not a servant, you'll be struck to the ground Flee the burning, greedy city Looking back on her to see there's nothing around
The day has come for all our sinners If you're not a servant, you'll be struck to the ground Flee the burning, greedy city Looking back on her to see there's nothing around I don't believe in fairy tales and no one wants to go to hell You've made the wrong decision and it's easy to see Now if you wanna serve above or be a king below with us You're welcome to the city where your future is set forever
Welcome to the family
Hey kid (hey kid) Do I have your attention? I know the way you've been living Life's so reckless, tragedy endless Welcome to the family Hey There's something missing Only time will alter your vision Never in question, lethal injection Welcome to the family Not long ago you find the answers were so crystal clear Within a day you find yourself living in constant fear Can you look at yourself now, can you look at yourself? You can't win this fight
I try and help you with the things that can't be justified I need to warn you that there is no way to rationalize So have you figured it out now, so have you figured it out? You can't win this fight
And in a way it seems there's no one to call When our thoughts are so numb And our feelings unsure We all have emptiness inside, we all have answers to find But you can't win this fight!
I see you're a king who's been dethroned Cast out in a world you've never know Stand down, place your weapon by your side It's our war in the end, we'll surely lose but that's alright So have you figured it out now, so have you figured it out?
So sorry you're not here I've been sane too long, my vision's so unclear Now take a trip with me But don't be surprised when things aren't what they seem
You've been breakin' down for far too long Far too many moons since you felt well and strong You see, you could say goodbye but you don't have to die Not ever
Engineer the wires to your brain Architect a code so you won't feel the pain With your family by your side and vigor in your eyes forever Live Forever I'm way up, a god in size, beyond the reach of mortals I shed my human side Father, oh father I stare at my reflection, have I lost that boy inside? Final paradigm What's it really mean to be a man? Think about your answer but please understand While it's natural to fear, I'll make it disappear forever I forever I'm way up, a god in size, beyond the reach of mortals I shed my human side Father, oh father I stare at my reflection, have I lost that boy inside? Final paradigm Singular I am I have the question if these thoughts are mine To live forever but did something in me die? I'm clawing my skin but I can't feel it inside I know the agony of pain would hurt so much better I'm way up, so far up Have I lost myself tonight? Mother, oh father Have you lost that boy you used to know?
It seems I should have walked away Reverse the wager I've no means to pay Toto has pulled back the green tonight, in sight And blue pills coat with such disdain I wore the shades for so long That I've forgotten how to see The curtain rises but who dares to pull the strings
I know this might be hard for you to believe and all, But you only exist because we allow it I question all the voices in my head Are they mine or have I been misled? Total understanding doesn't seem to mean a thing When you can't see behind the silver screen, a figurine Can't you hear me scream? By the way of cosmic rays A subtle breakdown jarred the code display A simulation as I can tell, our cell Playing out a hopeless scene We stand to lose all our charm And faith just seems to wane A billion years can seem a stunningly short time You've been beaten down time and time again But still you find yourself at the center of it all I question all the voices in my head Are they mine or have I been misled? Total understanding doesn't seem to mean a thing When you can't see behind the silver screen, a figurine Can't you hear me scream? You hear me, you had one thing to do, one thing And you fucked it up, piece of shit Nurse, patient 666158 needs to be sedated We need 500 CCs of M Oh hello there, dearie I've been expecting you Posturing the way I feel Is truth only what we believe is real? Marvel the sketches that paint the night, starlight And take a breath before it's all erased away
Their song Angels; Waking the Fallen, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet.
Yeah EVERGLOW Gonna be mad lunatic, girl When the mysteriously changed moon comes A show that will start suddenly In secret, yeah, dance I want it Ddi-dam-bam-bam, bba-rira-bam-bam A paradise found in a whole new world that is out of sync ‘Cause I’m a pirate, yeah, yeah A pirate, yeah, yeah A pirate, yeah, yeah Now let me introduce myself I am a fleet I Start this voyage Towards the moon mist Yeah, let me introduce myself...
Twenty four hours, the light disappears Overnight, night, overnight During the night when the dazzling starlight shines Ayy, lift the anchor Girls all over the world Dance tonight And we could be anything, anything now Go crazy, no doubt Rowin’ for the Crown Waving the flag, yeah...
All the way, all the way, all the way The riot we made All the way, all the way, all the way Can’t ever stay quiet Girls all over the world Run tonight Just get on board ‘Cause I’m a pirate, yeah, yeah A pirate, yeah, yeah A pirate, yeah, yeah Now let me introduce myself I am a fleet Start this voyage Towards the moon mist Yeah, let me introduce myself Ahoy! Sing a song now The hidden moon festival Well, shiver me timbers (Aye-aye) Watch this night together Last chance, get on board Approaching tsunami, disappearing afternoon Everyone falls asleep under these waves Yeah, I’m making the moves During the night when the dazzling starlight shines Ayy, lift the anchor Girls all over the world Dance tonight And we could be anything, anything now Go crazy, no doubt Rowin’ for the crown Waving the flag, yeah (Oh woah) All the way, all the way, all the way The riot that we made (Oh yeah) All the way, all the way, all the way Can’t ever stay quiet Girls all over the world Run tonight Just get on board...
A letter from that future Together with that blinding light Trust me and follow me up to my ark...

Far away, far away Higher and higher To the place unseen
No one can stop me anymore Get set, go! Good-bye I’m not my old self Take a look at my WILDSIDE
By instinct, do it Come along with me Let us go down, down, down, down, da street
I didn’t go anywhere Now I could go everywhere Scared of change Just looking from the side
When you protect me and I’m breathing I’m forced into misery like a puppet, muppet I thought I was no good But behind weakness there was strength Words from loveless people, I don’t care about it anymore I will show you the truth
Never tell lies to myself any more Fly now to the place I want to be I’m never scared of going to the sky
Inside O-O-Out My wild side, my wild side The unseen me who has Overcome weakness (WILDSIDE) Far away, far away Higher and higher To the place unseen
No one can stop me anymore Get set, go! Good-bye I’m not my old self Which this WILDSIDE
Accepting myself that I don’t even know of I want to love more, believe myself more So I don’t get lost, Yeah
Starlight, slash the dark night already So bright, sparkle La-la-la-la-la
Inside O-O-Out My wild side, my wild side The unseen me who has Overcome weakness (WILDSIDE) Far away, far away Higher and higher To the place unseen
No one can stop me anymore Get set, go! Good-bye I’m not my old self Which this WILDSIDE
By instinct, do it Come along with me Let us go down down I will show you my wild side

2023.06.07 18:02 MjolnirPants Jerry and the Adoring Fans: Part 2
"You're right," I said. "I hate it."
"You got a better idea?" Inanna asked. I shook my head. "No, and no time, either, let's go."
"Dude, you need like, a sergeant or something. I got you," the man said as he and his girlfriend or wife followed us back to the lounge.
"What kind of leadership experience do you have?" Inanna asked him.
"Uh, nothing like your husband," he admitted. I couldn't help but smirk. "Good, you've got the job," I said.
"What?" he asked.
"I know how the show portrays things, but in reality, Jerry's less of a leader and more a guy who's just kinda good at planning and really well liked. He's actually more of a lone wolf, really."
He looked at his girlfriend, who looked back. Both of them looked worried. I didn't blame them one bit.
"Okay," Inanna said as we reached the door. "This is on you, babe. Maybe turn your aura on a bit, and give your voice some extra volume."
I felt my cheeks burning. This was even worse than going on stage a few hours ago. At least then, there was some structure, and I had Inanna with me to take some of the attention.
I opened the lounge door and stepped in, the others hot on my heels. I stared at the crowd and felt my heart begin to flutter. Everyone here could die if I failed. So no pressure.
I followed Inanna's advice and let my natural aura slip a little loose. I could feel the weight of the woman's gaze change as it reached her. A second later, a few people, mostly women, nearest to us turned to eye me.
Inanna took my arm in her hand. "Remember, you want to be a little bit arrogant, babe. You don't have to be a dick about it, you just have to be straightforward. Acknowledge who you are and what you've done. Speak straight to them, and above all, act as confident as you can. Maybe work up a little righteous indignation. You're always a lot more confident when you're angry."
I nodded, accepting her advice. I put a little magic into my voice and cleared my throat. The sound was loud, but only a few people noticed in the din inside. People continued to talk and speculate and cry all over the room.
"Excuse me," I said. Nobody really paid me any mind. "Can I have your attention, please?" I asked. Still, nobody noticed. I glanced at Inanna, who shook her heard slightly. I decided to take a different approach and channeled Gary.
"EVERYBODY LISTEN UP!" I shouted, goosing the magic on my voice a bit. My words carried through the large room and a silence fell as all eyes turned to me.
"Okay, that's better," I said. I began to pace back and forth, hands on my hips, trying to strike a confident-looking figure. I was probably failing.
"Most of you probably recognize me from the talk just now. For anyone who doesn't, my name is Jerry Williams. I'm the man whom the character of Jimmy Waters in the television show The Legend of Jimmy
is based on. Not everything in the show is accurate, but the broad strokes are.
"I killed Astoram. I led the takedown of the Cult of Blood. I led the way in the fight against the primordials, and I was the one who killed Sarisa and saved the Sixteenth World. Those parts are all true."
A ragged cheer went up from the crowd, which made me blush again. This was not an appropriate time to cheer.
"As you all know," I continued once I thought they'd be able to make out my words again. "This ship is under attack. For those who didn't see it, it's a kraken. As it turns out, they're much bigger in real life than Hollywood ever prepared us for. The kraken is hunting, and it plans to eat us-" A collective gasp rose from the crowd, but I pushed on.
to. But it's an animal, and I'm a human being, so I'll put my plans against its, any day. But to make my plan work, I need everybody who can to help. As many people as possible. I can't kill or drive this thing off myself, at least not without sinking the ship in the process. But with your help, we can fight this thing off.
"My wife here is going to be producing some weapons. What I need is for everyone who can swing a sword or shoot a rifle to make an orderly line right here and get your weapon. We don't have a lot of time, folks, so it's important that you remain calm and orderly. An old maxim of combat is 'Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,'. We'll finish much faster by remaining orderly than by rushing. So please, start lining up now. Together, we can fight this thing. We can drive it back into the depths, and go home with a story to tell our families."
This time, the cheer was overwhelming. It startled me with its ferocity. Despite my admonition, almost every young man and quite a few middle-aged men, along with a surprising number of women of all ages surged forward, eager to be the first volunteers.
Inanna rushed over to push a couple of square tables together, along with the couple from outside. They got them laid out and got behind them just in time. I had never understood why Inanna kept an entire arsenal of weapons in hammerspace until then. I'd told her many times that there was no way she could use hundreds of slightly-enchanted swords or almost a thousand gen-1 through gen-3 assault rifles and a similar number of handguns she regularly collected from the DCM group in lieu of retiring them (depending on the exact sub-generation, they couldn't always be upgraded to the latest standards of enchantment). But now I understood. She'd been preparing for a day like today.
I wondered idly why it was that people felt the need to look to me as the hero, when really, Inanna was the one they wanted. She was smarter, more experienced, and a better leader than me, no doubt. But she seemed content to be an intimidating figure standing at my side.
I was jealous.
Inanna began producing weapons and handing them out. She didn't let the volunteers choose their weapon, but assigned them as she saw fit. She had quite the variety of weapons, too. Shorter folks got polearms, mostly large Dane axes with six-foot hafts. Larger folks got swords, either knightly sword or viking swords, but the largest folks got longswords and -in the case of a six-foot three woman with broad shoulders- a zweihander, not unlike Inanna's own blade.
The guns were also distributed to anyone who professed any military or other shooting experience. These, she passed out purely by request, asking if they'd prefer a rifle or handgun. I was initially surprised at the number who chose a handgun, until I remembered that a lot of people would have experience shooting those at gun ranges and in large, rural back yards. She quickly got the couple involved, so they could serve three people at a time. With each interaction taking only four or five seconds, we were arming several dozen people a minute to start with. Inanna was even smarter than I originally thought, though, and she began hauling out weapons by the armful and dumping them off, grabbing the occasional newly-armed volunteer and pulling them behind their impromptu counter to help assign weapons.
Soon, she was off the line entirely, letting the others do the assigning as she continued to add to a pile of swords and a pile of guns. A dozen people stood behind the table two minutes in, each one assigning a dozen weapons a minute.
The ship shook three more times as we passed everything out. I had each person join me outside after they'd retrieved their weapon. A few of the people with guns took potshots at the giant tentacles, but I had them lower their weapons. For this to work, we all had to attack at once. We needed to surprise the beast with pain.
Finally, Inanna joined me outside, letting me know she was there by slipping a hand between my legs to fondle me. I turned to face her and planted a kiss on her forehead. "You ready?" I asked.
"To be the first to ever fight off a kraken?" she asked with a laugh. "Fuck yeah."
I nodded and added more magic to my voice.
"Okay, listen up! I need to group you up into units! I need a hundred people per unit, that's about one for each of the eight tentacles-" I was interrupted by one of the ship's massive smoke stacks being ripped free by one of the tightening tentacles. As soon as it finished collapsing, I continued.
"Start grouping up now! We don't have a lot of time!"
The man -I still hadn't caught his name- from the couple who'd been helping us rushed forward and began grabbing people, assigning them the task of leading units. Huh, that was quite inspired. Maybe he should be leading.... I glanced over to see Inanna giving me a slight shake of the head, having figured out what I was just thinking. I shrugged and looked back to the crowd, which was now showing some divisions as people clumped up. I waited a few more seconds for the scattered people still not in a group to get into one before I continued.
"Okay, You guys are team one," I said. "Head all the way aft, to the very last tentacle. Start attacking as soon as you hear the rest of us shooting. The folks with swords will chop the bottoms of the tentacles, the folks with guns will shoot the tops. Try to get your people into the best positions to do the most damage possible. Go."
The group turned and began to jog aft.
"Okay," I said, gesturing to another group. "You're team two. Same instructions, just pick the next tentacle up. Go."
The other teams began to follow, not needing any more instruction.
"How much time do we give them?" I asked Inanna.
"Three minutes," she said without hesitation. I nodded, as that sounded about right. Still, it was going to be a long three minutes. The ship continued to creak and groan from the strain of the tightening tentacles.
"This is gonna be close," the woman said. I took my chance. "Hey, what's your name?" I asked.
"I'm Charlize, and my brother is Jason," she said.
"Your brother? Oh, I thought you two were, uh..." I stammered. She flashed me a grin. "We're from Alabama, but not that
part of the state."
"I uh, just didn't expect a... A brother and sister to take a cruise... I mean... Ugh. Sorry. It's fine, apologies if I offended you."
The woman looked at Inanna, an eyebrow quirked. Inanna nodded. "Always. It's a part of his charm."
I watched the last team get into position near the closest tentacle. "Okay," I said. "Let's join them."
We all ran over. I decided to use my sword, summoning Godslayer from hammerspace. As the blade appeared in my hand, the magic caused everyone around me to turn and look. The shimmering air around the blade raised a lot of eyebrows.
"Wow, I can feel
that thing," one woman muttered.
"I've been layering enchantments on it for years," I explained.
"Did you name it? All cool swords need a name," a younger guy who looked to be a fellow after my own (nerdy) heart asked. I pursed my lips and balked at the ridiculous question.
"Of course," I said. "This is Godslayer."
"Holy shit!" he said, his eyes widening. A few others turned to check it out.
"Yes, this is the sword I killed Sarisa with. I also took Tysrane's hand with it, but that's... I'm not exactly proud of that," I said.
"Bet Tysrane isn't, either," the nerdy guy said. The woman who'd first spoken looked at him and said, "Bet Tysrane makes a point of not pissing off Jim- er, Jerry."
"Fuck yeah," the nerdy guy mumbled. I blushed.
"Is everyone ready?" I asked loudly. A ragged chorus of agreements greeted me. I realized I should be more inspiring, so I tried again, adding the magic back to my voice.
"Are we all ready to show this thing what happens when it messes with us?!" I shouted. A harsh cheer erupted.
"Lets go, then!" I yelled at the top of my lungs and rushed forward to the giant mass of glistening flesh before me. Gunfire erupted behind me as me and dozens of others began slashing into the tentacle.
As the assault picked up in pace, a new sound emerged. It started as the crackle of broken parts of the ship's superstructure, the tentacles writhing in response to the sudden pain. But it changed into a gurgling roar that grew louder and louder.
Suddenly, the roar grew more hoarse and I glanced aside to see a massive shape rising behind the structure to my left. Using a bit of magic, I jumped onto the roof and rushed to the edge.
The kraken's body had broken the surface. I could see where the tentacles joined the body, and in between them, the beast's mouth. It didn't have a beak like an octopus or a squid, but a massive, gaping maw full of sharp, pointy teeth. As the mouth rose above the water, the sound grew deafening, drowning out even the gunfire.
I stared at the thing as the mouth closed and sort of drew back into the body, the roar dying out. With a sudden loud hissing sound, the mouth shot back out, almost like a goblin shark's jaws, opening wide and releasing an enormous spray of a steaming black liquid.
The fluid splashed over the ship, smoking and bubbling where it landed. A few people were splattered with it, and each and every one of them screamed and began to try to wipe the sticky substance off themselves.
"Get them to the pools!" I shouted. "Get the injured to the pools!" A few people heard me and I watched as one burly older gentleman grabbed a flailing young lady, tossed her over his shoulder, and rushed to the pool. He splattered himself with the fluid, which bubbled and smoked as it struck him, but he paid it no mind. When he reached the pool, he jumped in with the woman, and I saw him drag her under and start stripping her clothes. More bodies splashed into the pool, and I nodded in approval. Taking off whatever clothing was soaked in the stuff was a good idea.
I turned back to see the beast sucking its jaw back in again. This was no good. It had already knocked about one in ten people off the line, either suffering from whatever kind of acid this was, or helping those so afflicted. If it kept this up, it would stop us.
That's when I realized that my first plan was viable now. Its body was out of the water. I could target it, right now, and end this.
I rose into the air, charging my strike. I dismissed Godslayer and, having learned from my efforts against the primordials, dismissed my clothes as well. I really liked that T-shirt.
I flew up and away from the beast, reaching a point about two hundred yards away from the ship. I could see the ends of tentacles in the water below me, really speaking to the size of the creature, as those tentacles were currently still wrapped around the ship.
I closed my eyes and prayed. "Please let go, please
let go." I opened my eyes back up and waited.
The beast spat more acid onto the deck, but it had already splattered the people nearest to its mouth, and those near to them had helped. Only a few people caught some of the acid, and a few more stopped to help them get in the water.
The beast was thrashing now. I could see the ship rocking back and forth, and the tentacles were coming loose and tightening down. I watched, waiting for my chance.
Finally, blessedly, it happened. Six of the tentacles lifted up, the ends slipping out of the water. They were no longer grasping the ship, having pulled back to end the pain our ragtag army was inflicting.
I drew in as much power as I could manage and shot forward, my shield forming a shell around me.
---- Charlize Mayberry, Totally Not Fucking Her Brother, Jesus Christ, They're Just Best Friends, I Mean, it's Her Brother For Crying Out Loud
Charlize watched as Jerry made the inhuman jump to the structure to her left to survey the battle. She could see the kraken's body, and she could see Jerry's shoulders and head as he regarded it.
He looked even more impressive than his counterpart in the show. Magic that she could see and feel surrounded him, making him crackle with strange colors she couldn't give name to. His sword shimmered, the blade a thing of immense gravity, drawing the eye to it. His shoulders were firmly set, and even from behind, she could sense the grim determination. She remembered a scene from the show, where Karen had watched him and whispered "Angel of Death," and she decided right then and there that that scene had actually happened.
When the kraken spat some kind of burning black bile over everyone, she heard him shouting, as if he'd been prepared for this. She found a man screaming to her right, trying to get the stuff off his face. "Come on!" she yelled, grabbing one of his hands and rushing him to the pool. By the time she got there, the water was gray and muddy, and partially or entirely naked people with serious-looking burns were climbing back out. She shoved the guy in, watching him go under. A few seconds later, he emerged, scrubbing at his face.
"Oh god, oh god, oh god... Thank you," he said, his eyes still squeezed shut. She could see the wound on his cheek where the acid had eaten into the skin, but he had managed to rinse most of it away.
"Come on," she called, "Get out." He blinked his eyes open, then swam to the edge. More people were coming in, and she worried that the pool water might get saturated with enough of the acid to become acidic, itself.
Charlize helped the man out of the pool, then turned to look back down the ship. The tentacles were rising, one after another, trying to escape the pain of gripping the vessel. Those armed with guns continued to fire, pouring lead into the savaged appendages as those with melee weapons caught their breaths.
She watched as all but two of the tentacle lifted off the ship. Hope swelled in her breast and she glanced over at a burly, older man with no shirt on, leaning on his knees and catching his breath, next to a younger woman in nothing but a pair of panties, laying on the deck with burns all over her legs and torso.
The man caught her gaze and flashed her a grim smile. "Almost," he said. Charlize nodded and raised her rifle, shooting at the distant tentacles that remained attached to the ship.
She had only fired once or twice when the entire ship shuddered and a deafening crack caused her to look up. She saw a golden streak flash into and through the beast's body, which was more clearly seen from her current position on the pool deck.
The kraken simply exploded.
Chunks of wet, slippery flesh flew outward with enough force to bowl over anyone they struck and leave dents in the metal sides of the ship. The two remaining tentacles on the ship let go, pulling back under the water as the six in the air flopped down, sending a cleansing wave of seawater over the deck.
The water ran red with the kraken's blood as it swept over the sides, carrying chunks of monster and a few people who'd been caught off guard with it. Charlize grabbed one guy and helped him catch his footing before the flow subsided.
She straightened up and looked over to where the dead beast was sinking beneath the surface. A gold-glowing figure emerged from the water, and Charlize recognized Jerry.
He was naked. His body was hard and tightly muscled, but lean and agile-looking. His skin glowed with a golden light, and she could see red lightning playing about his skin as he rose into the air and then glided over to the ship and sat back down.
The crowd, who had begun cheering at the beast's death, fell into a hush of awe as they all turned to the glowing figure. He exuded power, commanding every eye to look at him. His feet settled down on the deck and he walked forward.
With a sudden rush of heat in her cheeks, Charlize realized that he was rocking an enormous hard-on. Like, impressively big. If she'd seen one like that in a porno, she'd have assumed it was CGI or a prosthetic. If she'd been able to think straight, she'd probably have found it a little ridiculous.
He walked past her, turning his head and clasping her shoulder. "Thank you," he said with a smile. Her knees went weak at his touch and she began to reflect upon the fact that, at least in the show, Ishtar loved to bring women home for herself and Jimmy.
She watched him thank everyone he passed, until he finally found his wife. They embraced, and then a few seconds later, they vanished.
Charlize caught her breath and let her heartbeat slow down. A woman approached her, and she recognized her as the last person whose question Jerry had declined to answer during the talk.
"Do you know where their cabin is?" she asked. Charlize shook her head. Another woman approached, holding hands with an effeminate-looking man carrying a handgun. "They're in the Princess Suite, it's in the big stack up fore," she said with a gesture.
"I'm gonna go see if they're there," the first woman said breathlessly. The couple nodded, and all three of them took off. Jason put his hand on her shoulder and she looked at him.
"I'm, uh..." Charlize said, making up her mind right then and there. "I'm gonna go do something. I'll be around in a bit."
She hurried inside, found an elevator to ride to the top floor and them hurried down until she saw the door labeled "Princess Suite". She knocked on it.
A second later, the door was opened by a naked woman that Charlize didn't recognize. Looking past her, she could see a tangle of limbs. Moans and gasps already filled the air.
The woman stepped aside as Charlize stepped in and immediately began tugging at her shirt.
---- Jerry Williams, Just Wants a Quiet Vacation For Once In His Life
The next morning, I sat on a deck chair on the upper observation deck as the ship pulled into port for repairs. We'd all been given vouchers for a new cruise, as compensation for the one cut short by the attack. The captain of the ship had come to personally thank me for rallying the defense. Unfortunately, she'd done this during the orgy Inanna had organized right after the attack, and it had taken the bridge crew over an hour to locate her when she failed to return.
I winced, thinking about that.
Inanna had turned her chair to face mine and had her legs on my lap. A few other people were also laid out with us. Mostly women, but a few men as well. All of us had come up here from my cabin. All of us were naked, and though this wasn't a nudist cruise, nobody seemed inclined to complain. The staff had recognized Inanna and I, and we were being waited on hand and foot.
I took a sip of my champagne and rubbed Inanna's shin.
"I've been thinking," she said.
"About what?" I asked. She cracked one eye open. "About the beard you had when you found us in the spire."
"Just the beard, huh? Not about... Everything else?"
"I think about everything else often enough. Today, I'm thinking about the beard."
"Okay," I said. "What about it?"
"You should grow it back. Let it get a little longer." I chuckled and tickled her behind the knee, eliciting a little squeal and narrowly escaping behind kicked in the family jewels.
"I always knew you had a thing for Gary," I said. She laughed outright at that, but before she could say anything else, a passenger walked up with a notebook.
"Hello," I said. "Hi," he responded, and I recognized him as the nerdy-looking young man from the fight, the one who'd asked me if Godslayer had a name.
"I was just wondering if I could...." he held the notebook out to me.
"Sure," I said, shifting Inanna's legs and standing. "Would you like a photo, too?"
He grinned at me like I'd offered him a Ferrari for Christmas. Inanna rose with us and accepted his phone, and I took a moment to smile at the camera and give him bunny ears while Inanna snapped a couple pictures. When she handed him the phone back, I took the notebook and a sharpie he had stuck through the rings.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Tom.... Tom Wilford," he stammered, still not quite believing this was happening. I wrote him a little note and signed it.
"Tom, if you ever find yourself working with magic and want to make a career out of it, you can contact me. I'm the department head of Magical Research and Development at the Divine Crisis Management Group. Our number's on the website and in the yellow pages."
"That's awesome!" he exclaimed. "I've actually been working... Uh, look." He stuck the notebook between his knees and held his hands a foot or two apart, concentrating. I saw sparks appear between them. Just a few, and they were small, but they were clearly visible. The kid had talent. I clasped his shoulder.
"That's a legitimate talent, Tom. I mean that. Most people can't do any magic at all without training. The fact that you worked that out is very promising."
He beamed at me. I mean, he positively glowed
at the praise.
"Thank you," he stammered. "Thanks... Thank you for... For saving the ship and for..."
I smiled back at him. "It was my pleasure. And it was you guy, all of the passengers who fought, who saved the ship.
I ended the interaction with a hug that definitely excited him, and don't ask me how I know, please. He bounded off on cloud nine as I resumed my seat and Inanna put her legs back on my lap.
"See?" she said. I glanced over to see the sun glistening off the light sheen of sweat coating her dusky skin. God, she was so beautiful.
"It wasn't so hard, was it?"
"I'm still not so sure I'm cut out to be a leader. And I'm still not convinced that the risk of me turning in the asshole from my visions is past," I said.
"Bah," she replied dismissively. "You are a leader, whether you like it or not. You're a hero
, like it or not. I know you wouldn't have chosen this position, but it's been chosen for you, and the best thing you could do is be the best damn hero you can be."
I thought about that for a minute, and honestly, I couldn't argue the point. Maybe she was right, and I should do a bit more in terms of being a good hero, instead of just keeping my head down and trying to help where I could.
"Besides," she continued a moment later. "Emperor Gerald had sixty years of Sarisa whispering in his ear to get that way. You've got me. I'll keep you on the straight and girthy."
I laughed. "Straight and narrow," I corrected.
"It's anything but narrow," she replied mildly. "Although, now that I think about it, I prefer when I'm the one on the straight and girthy." She reached down to grab my hand and pull it up to her pubic hair. I gave it a little tug, then ran my fingers along the stretch marks at the base of her belly. Those were possibly the sexiest part of her whole body, and even the least sexy part of her was jaw-dropping. She opened an eye to frown at me, until her gaze roamed down and noticed the effect that touching them was having on a different part of me. Her feet shifted over to that part and I felt that old familiar thrill as she touched me. It was just as intense this time as it had been the first time.
"Ready for another?" she asked.
"I think we should relax for a bit," I said. Inanna smirked and her eyes focused past me. "They don't," she said. I glanced behind to see two of the women from the orgy walking over.
"You forgot to turn your aura off, love," she said as she set up and moved to sit on my lap.
"Here we go again," I groaned as hands and lips began to touch me.
Don't tell anyone, but in all candor, this was the part of being a hero I enjoyed the most.

2023.06.07 05:39 Teffycom TOKYO TEFUTEFU – “I can confidently say that TOKYO TEFUTEFU, which some people mocked in the past, has become incredibly cool now” (May 2023)
Last March, TOKYO TEFUTEFU continued their activities as a five-piece, and after a tour consisting of joint concerts with other artists, the girls have further developed their sense of unity as a group and now they are about to release their fourth single, “LYCORisALIVE”. TOKYO TEFUTEFU is a group that has been appealing with the fleeting, shimmering tenderness that lurks in the gap between days, expressed through their delicate voices and the body language of their dancing, but this time they have put strength and determination into their songs to reach out and take their fans with them so that together they can break through the harsh realities of life. This is the anthem that TOKYO TEFUTEFU are only able to perform now, after strengthening themselves through many live performances. The spirit of this song is so strong. After their first solo concert of the year in April, they’ll be going on a solo tour across the country, but in the meantime, we asked them to tell us about their new songs and their mood for the future. – On April 8th, you had your solo concert at Ebisu LIQUIDROOM and it was your first solo concert in a long time. Tell us how it went. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: We’ve been completely focused on our joint concert tour and this was our first solo concert in a year. Also, we hadn’t performed with the band in a long time, so it felt like everyone was having a lot of fun. Chimura Shifumi
: It was a lot of fun. We haven’t performed in such a big venue since our LIQUIDROOM show last year, so it was pretty epic (laughs). We rehearsed thoroughly and the people came out many times more than before, so it felt like we were able to reach our potential. – The situation at the concerts has changed from a year ago because now it is possible to place more people in the venues and the fans are allowed to sing along. Since TOKYO TEFUTEFU started during the pandemic, you didn’t have many shows where you could get a lot of audience response, right? Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: During our tour last year, the restrictions were gradually lifted, and when I heard so many people shouting at our solo concert, I was very impressed. Chimura Shifumi
: From the stage, I saw everyone jumping up and down with excitement, shouting “Lust!”, “Nonno!” and so on. And I realized that this is how concerts should be. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Last year there were still some tight restrictions, but this year there was an area where fans could move around a lot, and seeing all those frolicking people made me realize that it’s very different from a year ago. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: We debuted in the middle of a pandemic, and there were partitions between us and the audience all the time… Chimura Shifumi
: It was like being trapped (laughs). Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: So when the various restrictions were lifted, we changed our approach to performances from having the audience mostly watch to having fun with them. Chimura Shifumi
: It felt like the audience was becoming more and more involved in our performances. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: I think at the April performance at LIQUIDROOM we were able to show everything we had been able to achieve through trial and error over the past two years. – During the tour and the solo concerts, were there any songs that you thought were even better at the concerts, or ones that gradually changed? Chimura Shifumi
: There were many such songs. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: And with the release of our second album “Hyperphantasia”, we also had new songs that we didn’t have last year. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: At the end of our LIQUIDROOM show last year, on the second encore, we had our first performance as a five-piece with the song “ash.”. But then the audience heard that song for the first time, and it was impossible to sing along, but this time we performed “ash.” as the first song, and everyone immediately raised their fists and started singing along, and it touched me a lot. – The first song at your April solo concert at LIQUIDROOM was “ash.”? Chimura Shifumi
: Yes. At our LIQUIDROOM show last year, we performed it last, so you could say it’s a continuation of the story. But unlike last year, we’ve definitely grown, and I think it was interesting to watch us perform looking back at what we did a year ago. – And yet, is there a reason why you refrained from solo concerts for such a long time? Yuzuriha Ouhi
: We debuted during the pandemic, so we had few opportunities to show ourselves to people, and so both to show ourselves to others and for our own growth, we felt that we needed to absorb many different things. We ourselves suggested to the director and the staff, “We want to see things we haven’t seen before. By performing with different artists, we want to absorb different things”. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: And, like, since we’re doing joint concerts, it’s better to hold off on the solo concerts. Chimura Shifumi
: Before that, we hadn’t performed with anyone outside of our agency. Having seen a lot of artists perform, there were many who actively involved the audience in their performances, as well as those who, on the contrary, skillfully got the audience involved themselves, as if saying, “Let’s follow me!”. “This is amazing!” – I thought, and at the same time I didn’t want to lose, and I think I learned a lot. Mary Lust
: I learned a lot. Tokanai Nonno
: I’m in charge of choreography, so I watched a lot of artists perform, and I was able to learn a lot from them. I was able to absorb a lot of things that will be reflected in the future of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, and it was a time when I went through a lot of trial and error, such as changing the choreography of our songs. And I think our solo concert in April was a natural continuation of all that. – Because the choreography was the only thing you could do together with the audience and achieve a sense of unity with them in the period when shouting was not yet allowed. Tokanai Nonno
: Yes. When the audience repeats the choreography and dances with us, it’s wonderful, and a sense of unity is born. I realized that during this tour. And I started trying to make my choreography simpler, so to speak, so that it would be easier for the audience to repeat and memorize. Mary Lust
: And there were more free sections without choreography. Tokanai Nonno
: I added more free sections. With strict choreography, there are times when you don’t have time to look at the audience, but I wanted there to be more moments where we meet with our eyes. Before, I was always working on the choreography to impress the audience, but now that has changed. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: Adapted to the current times (laughs). Chimura Shifumi
: By adding moments like this to “daybreak” and other songs with intense dancing, it’s quite the opposite, they’ve become even more charming. Before, the emphasis on dancing was natural for TOKYO TEFUTEFU, but I think we were able to get people even more drawn into the choreography created by Nonno. Tokanai Nonno
: I’m glad~ (laughs). – It was obviously a great tour that you had a lot of fun on. Listening to you now, I thought that this experience of yours was also reflected in your new single “LYCORisALIVE”. It’s a song in which you clearly look at your audience and listeners, and even more clearly proclaim that you intend to move forward with them and take them with you. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: Yes. I think that before TOKYO TEFUTEFU’s songs were interpreted and perceived differently depending on the listener, but now it feels like this song is a message from TOKYO TEFUTEFU to our fans (“Mirages”). Chimura Shifumi
: It feels like a kaleidoscope, so to speak… All together
: Kaleidoscope (laughing)? Chimura Shifumi
: When I sing this song, I think of everything that has happened to us in the past two years. Like, a lot has happened, but let’s hold hands and keep going! And the moment when Nonno reads the poetry really touches me. Mary Lust
: It’s a beautiful moment. It’s incredibly moving. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: When we recorded it, Nonno was even asked to perform it in a more restrained way. Tokanai Nonno
: I put too much emotion into it. And syva-san, who was recording it, said to me, “Let’s have a little more restraint” (laughs). So that is the restrained version. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: But it’s really good. Tokanai Nonno
: It’s just an explosion of emotions. Chimura Shifumi
: I’ve never heard that trembling in her voice, or rather such an explosion of emotions in Nonno’s voice before. I was astonished. Tokanai Nonno
: I’ve never wanted to cry during recording sessions, but this time I cried a little. – It’s probably not the kaleidoscope that was mentioned earlier (laughs), but you had a lot of feelings inside, didn’t you? Tokanai Nonno
: Yeah. It’s exactly the memories of the past that came back to me. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: But I think it’s a song that really proclaims that we want to take everyone with us. It’s a song about grabbing the hands of our “mirages” and taking them with us, and I’m glad we have a song like that now. Chimura Shifumi
: There’s the line “Kawari wa Inai” (“No one can replace us”) in the lyrics, and I heard that GESSHIRUI-san had never dared to say that in his lyrics before. But after receiving those lyrics, I felt determined to be the one who could fulfill them – I felt responsible, so to speak. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: It was the same with “ash.” – I call it “entrusting a commitment” (laughs). Chimura Shifumi
: That’s exactly how I feel (laughs). Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: We felt that we had to become people worthy of singing such things. And even if it takes time, I think we have to prove it.
“All the unnecessary things went away. I really felt that I wanted to continue being with all of them” – There’s obviously a special meaning to the fact that this is the time when you received such a lyric. It’s like a proclamation of what kind of group they want you to be, that you’re really becoming that kind of group. I think it’s because your listeners feel that kind of reliability that it’s all been able to come to life in the form of this song. Mary Lust
: It’s been two years, we’ve done a lot of concerts together and performed at LIQUIDROOM – I think that’s why we can release this song now. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: You could say it’s a song about the five of us deciding to move on after the solo concert at LIQUIDROOM. Chimura Shifumi
: It wasn’t all smooth – we didn’t talk about it, but there were hard times, but I’m happy that the five of us could sing this song, and it motivates me to try even harder from now on. I’m determined to live up to those expectations. Mary Lust
: Kawaguchi Junta-san, the author of this song, is the one who wrote “ao,” and “LYCORisALIVE” also has a youthful feel to it, and it has a lot of sudden transitions. I feel that this music is also a continuation of TOKYO TEFUTEFU’s past and creates a kind of story. – It has a fast rock tempo, it’s melodic, but it also has poetry reading and rapping, so it has a lot of interesting elements. Tokanai Nonno
: It’s really fun to listen to. Chimura Shifumi
: There’s a moment in the last chorus when the music is muted and Kagari is the only one singing. In the beginning, Kagari wasn’t that emotional – she seemed so carefree, and even on stage she was cute and fluffy, but during our solo concert at LIQUIDROOM, at that moment the spotlight shone on Kagari, and when I saw how passionately she sang from her heart and soul, I was ready to cry. Or rather, I cried. It was so intense. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: At that moment, Kagari came to the front of the stage. And the four of us were watching behind her back, but it was so cool that it really made me want to cry. Chimura Shifumi
: She grew up so much. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: “LYCORisALIVE” is just a song about us. When we sing something else – we have a lot of cool songs, so we try to sing them cool, and sometimes we show off, but this song I sang without trying to show off – I sang it the way I am. Chimura Shifumi
: It felt really good, and I think the mirages felt it too. – We touched a little bit on how Nonno-san was recorded, but how did the rest of you handle the recording? Was there anything you paid special attention to? Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: “Tada, Junsui de Irarenai Machi de” (“In this city where you just can’t stay pure”) – I sang that line from the last chorus while imagining myself on a huge stage singing in front of our “mirages”. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: There’s a moment when I sing along with Nonno: “Kiseki wo Tomo ni Ayumu Imi wo, Kimi to” (“So the meaning of our path cannot be wrong”). And Nonno and I are the leader and the subleader, and so by singing this line together… How can I put it… Tokanai Nonno
: Yes, I understand. When Ouhi is around, I feel so relaxed. Mary Lust
: It suits both of you to sing together. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: It’s hard to put into words – there’s a feeling of supporting each other, and I like that a lot. Tokanai Nonno
: I’m glad. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: And also, that rapping moment is something that ‘Tefutefu’ almost never has, so I was looking forward to it. Mary Lust
: Probably the only time we’ve had rap parts in a song is in “siscatharsis”. Before you go on stage together at a concert, you want to show the full power of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, don’t you? That’s how I felt when I sang that moment. Like “Look!” Chimura Shifumi
: In the last chorus, after the English phrase, there’s the line “Omoi wa Boku ni Butsukete? (“So pour out all your feelings to me”), but I don’t think I’ve ever had a moment in my parts where I address the audience like that. I feel like I’m better at expressing my feelings to the audience now, and every time I sing this part, I get tearful and warm in my heart. I sing because I want to save all the people in the world, so I really want people to pour out all their feelings to me. – The fact that you feel this warmth is probably a result of actually seeing the scene that unfolds in the song? Chimura Shifumi
: Yes, I saw that scene. Mary Lust
: I was the last one to record, so I think I got to enjoy the process a little bit more than the others. It’s a song that brings back a lot of memories, but at the same time it’s a song that looks into our future, so it’s a lot of fun to sing. I sang it thinking about different things: the future of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, what stages I want to perform on, what interesting things I want to do. And my last line was “Boku to, Ikite?” (“Let’s live, together with me”) – that’s also the kind of thing you don’t normally just say. But I was entrusted with that part of the song, so I took everyone else’s feelings on my shoulders and sang “Boku to, Ikite?” (“Let’s live, together with me”). – That phrase – “Boku to, Ikite?” (“Let’s live, together with me”) – also reminds me of your agency sempai, Zenbu Kimi no Sei da, and it’s also very touching. It feels like TOKYO TEFUTEFU are, if not inheriting the will of the “Zenkimi”, at least going to put those feelings into their songs in the future. Chimura Shifumi
: Yes, that’s true. “Zenkimi” is on an indefinite hiatus right now, so we are filled with a strong spirit to take it all on our shoulders. – So it’s taken you a whole year to be able to sing this song. Of course you grow a lot at concerts, but by getting new songs and recording them, you can feel your own growth, can’t you? Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Yes, I think it allows you to feel that growth that you can’t feel at the shows. I feel my own growth, but at the same time I feel the growth of the other members very much. Mary Lust
: I get that. Like, wow, she can sing like that! Yuzuriha Ouhi
: I listen to the recording and I notice more and more new things in it and I’m like, “Oh, this is cool!” Chimura Shifumi
: At the very beginning of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, the director told me, “You’re the one who will lead the TOKYO TEFUTEFU songs!” I agreed and never forgot it, but lately the others have become so good at singing, and they’ve also become so good at putting emotion into their singing. So I’ve been hustling (laughs), but I’m trying my best not to lose. – So you stimulate each other. I felt that before, most of TOKYO TEFUTEFU’s songs and melodic lines were very technical, but “LYCORisALIVE”, like you said, just portrays you as you are, and it has an incredibly emotional side to it. There’s a good energy in it, like “they can sing like this”, “it turns out they were such a group”. Tokanai Nonno
: The days when we were just trying to sing well are gone (laughs). The same goes for the performances: we used to try to impress everyone with our dancing, but now our performances are softer and I guess you could say we’ve come out of our shells? Yuzuriha Ouhi
: That’s what we are. Tokanai Nonno
: I used to show off a lot. But after I sang “LYCORisALIVE,” all that weird pride and other unnecessary things went away. I really felt that I wanted to continue being with all of them. I took over the choreography for that song on a whim. And in the second half of the part we sang with Ouhi, I unconsciously counted to five on my fingers. All together
: Wow, really? – Speaking of which, what do you think of the choreography for “LYCORisALIVE”? Tokanai Nonno
: I wanted it to have a fun beginning – so that the audience could have fun with us, too, so in the beginning we’re running from one corner of the stage to the other. And also in the verse it’s more like no choreography, we just clap our hands freely and so on, and in the chorus we don’t do anything technical either, we just spread our hands out. “There’s no need for all that!” – I thought. I came up with the choreography for “ash.” based on the image of broken wings. But in this song you could say I’m exposing myself. Also, a very important point is that the song starts with the scene where we open the book and turn the pages, and ends with the scene where we close the book and look into the future. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Like this is where our story begins. Tokanai Nonno
: The song ends with the proclamation, “Let’s join us in the world of TOKYO TEFUTEFU – let’s go into its future!” – What was the audience’s reaction when you performed this song for the first time? Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Even though we sang it for the first time, it felt like we had sung it many times before. Chimura Shifumi
: It felt like we’ve known the song for a long time. Tokanai Nonno
: And the audience started running and dancing with us in the chorus from the very beginning. Mary Lust
: That’s probably because it’s a song that represents the past and future of the TOKYO TEFUTEFU’s story, so everyone understood it right away and started having fun with us. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: It’s so exciting to see what happens next, isn’t it? I feel like this song is getting better and better every time we perform it. – I think this song will become the new anthem of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, proclaiming that you are gaining momentum and moving forward. The second song on the single, “houyou”, is also emotional, but in a different way. Chimura Shifumi
: It has a kind of nostalgic melody in a visual-kei style, a kind of melancholy, so to speak. There’s a lot of Ouhi-san in the chorus, and I think her voice fits it very well. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: I’m glad. – Yeah, she gives off a bit of a dark flavor. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: During the recording, on the phrase of the second chorus – “Mune ni Sumu, Batsu wo Negau” (“Dwelling in my chest, begging for punishment”) – syva-san said to me, “Let a parasite dwell in your chest!” And I was like, “A parasite? What?” And so I sang, imagining the image of a parasite consuming me. Chimura Shifumi
: The phrase that comes next, “Subete Yogoshiteshimae” (“Now cover everything with filth”) is really good, isn’t it? That parasite is there. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: I felt like I’d become an incredibly bad girl (laughs). Mary Lust
: “LYCORisALIVE” is a song that says “Let’s live, together with me,” and “houyou” is also a song that says “Let’s live, together with me,” but in a different sense. Chimura Shifumi
: This song is more like a cry from deep inside. Surely everyone feels things in it that they never show to anyone. For example, the feeling of possessiveness that lurks in the deepest parts of your heart – for me, this song is about those feelings that no one usually shows. Tokanai Nonno
: I understand. Both “houyou” and “LYCORisALIVE” talk that “one shines because there is another”. Somewhere in “houyou” I felt an atmosphere similar to “Zenkimi”, so I tried to use their choreography as an example (during one of the livestreams Nonno said that it was the choreography of “Infantry dystopia”, “AntiIyours” and “Natural Born Independent”) and combine it with the choreography of TOKYO TEFUTEFU to create something of the best of both worlds. I wanted to pay my respects to the sempais, but at the same time I wanted to surpass them. – Both songs came out very rich with different nuances. Chimura Shifumi
: I realized how good everyone had become at expressing their emotions. But don’t think it’s a kind of looking down. When we first started, I couldn’t imagine that we would one day be able to sing in such a tear-jerking way – myself included. And I feel like there’s probably no one who doesn’t like TOKYO TEFUTEFU after listening to this release. Mary Lust
: I tried, but it was hard for me to put my feelings into my singing, but now I think there’s more conviction in my singing. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: And at the concerts, that conviction comes out even more – there’s something you can see with your own eyes, so I want you to see how we perform. – And besides expressing your feelings, is there anything else you would like to improve or change? Chimura Shifumi
: I think that even though I wanted to change something before, I couldn’t do it. I thought that impressing the audience with our dancing and singing in beautiful formations was a characteristic of TOKYO TEFUTEFU, so I had a lot of ideas, but I was satisfied with what I had. But lately Nonno’s choreography has changed and I think I am doing more of what I want to do (laughs). Tokanai Nonno
: When I do choreography, I always draw and send everyone their positions, but lately there have been more moments where I have said, “Do whatever you want!” Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: Like, show something cool (laughs). Tokanai Nonno
: There were more moments where I started to trust them. Mary Lust
: In the beginning we just tried our best to sing and dance. And I think as we performed, we developed an idea of what we wanted to be on stage and what we wanted our concerts to be like. And I think we finally got our hands on what we needed to do to make it happen. – Looking back now, was there a concert that you think was a turning point for TOKYO TEFUTEFU? Chimura Shifumi
: Probably last year’s Christmas show in Nagoya on December 25th. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: It’s an annual free codomomental event held in Nagoya. Chimura Shifumi
: It was a joint concert with other groups from our agency, but we performed twice that time. And those concerts were so good that we were satisfied with them ourselves. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: At first we were only supposed to do one perfomance, but on the day of the show we were suddenly asked to perform again, and we immediately agreed. We didn’t want to waste the chance we were given, and I think that’s why everyone was determined to make a really cool show. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: This was the second time we performed at this event, but the first time not as many people came to see us as we wanted, and it was very annoying: “Why don’t you want to see us?” Both the first time and the second time, that event left a very strong impression on me. Chimura Shifumi
: I can confidently say that TOKYO TEFUTEFU, which some people mocked in the past, has become incredibly cool now, so I really want people to come and see us perform. Tokanai Nonno
: Because we have a tour coming up as well. – You have a new tour starting in May. It will take different forms including in-store events and solo concerts. Tokanai Nonno
: This time we’re going to take the chance we’ve been given and get more companions. This is a tour that burns with our feelings to make TOKYO TEFUTEFU the best in the world! Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: (laughs). The main purpose of this tour is to make more companions and strengthen our bonds, so I hope we can bring more people into the world of TOKYO TEFUTEFU. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: This is a tour that connects us to the future, so we’re really counting on it. – A solo concert at LIQUIDROOM, the release of the new single “LYCORisALIVE”, and now you’re getting ready to go on a tour across the country – it looks like this year won’t be the same for you as the previous ones. Chimura Shifumi
: Actually, we were taken to training camp before our LIQUIDROOM show. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: It was so sudden that you could tell we were being dragged there (laughs). Chimura Shifumi
: And before the camp, we had a nabe party together. And it started with the director asking us, “What do you want to be?” We had a serious talk with each other about what we wanted to be and what we wanted to improve, and when we shared those feelings with the director and said that we would try hard for TOKYO TEFUTEFU, he said: “Well, then let’s go to camp.” Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: It seems to me that after the nabe party, there was a kind of change in everyone’s minds. You can feel that our will has become stronger. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Our current goal is to perform with a fire at Makuhari Messe (laughs). Chimura Shifumi
: I want to do that. And I want to do this trick with the descent to the stage on a rope. – So your horizons have expanded to such an extent. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: Yes. We’ve already had a meeting to move forward towards that goal. Mary Lust
: I want to have more “mirages” on this tour that will move with us towards that dream. – And that is another story that is reflected in “LYCORisALIVE”. Yuzuriha Ouhi
: So when I saw those lyrics, I thought, “Really?” This is really our story as it is. Kagari Kohaku Sekai
: That means that when we talk about “LYCORisALIVE”, we are also talking about TOKYO TEFUTEFU. It expresses our story so much that when we read the lyrics, we can literally say, “That was then, this is now”.

2023.06.06 23:29 EnCamp A hilarious developer diary penned by Greg Fulton, lead designer for HoMMIII, detailing NWO's final sprint to get the game published in working order at the deadline
Two weeks ago, I spoke on the phone with Tom Ono, the manual writer for Heroes of Might and Magic III. As usual, Tom asked how things were going. I said things were good... then proceeded to whine and complain for the next five minutes (much to Tom's amusement). 12/05/98
When the conversation concluded, Tom said, "Don't complain too much. Some people would give their eyeteeth to be in the game industry." I responded, "Who are these people and why haven't they been beaten for their own good?"
My name is Gregory Fulton, game designer for Heroes of Might and Magic III (developed by New World Computing, published by 3DO). You may call me Greg. Like most game designers, I'm sure you'll find me a bitter and cynical man, aged beyond my years, full of sarcasm, and inexplicably drawn to the horrors of game production like a lobotomized moth to the "pretty" flame.
As I guide you through your weekly tour of my memories, I promise the recollected images will be truthful and sincere but written with a smirk and a wink.
Undoubtedly, we will interact with the following animals: artists, level builders, managers, producers, programmers, testers, and monkeys. To help ensure your safety, I request you fasten your seat belts, keep your hands to your sides at all times, and be sure to not make any quick and sudden movements. Remember... we will be passing through the game production process.
It's Saturday. I'm at work with three other members of the Heroes3 team. I'll be in again tomorrow.
Smells like "crunch time."
Everyone in the game industry knows the term "crunch time." Those not in the industry may ask, "What is crunch time?" Long hours: 10-18 each day. We're starting our fourth crunch month. We have at least one more after this.
Bad take-out food: Mexican and Chinese food are New World's favorites. Today we had Taco Bell and Domino's pizza as part of NWC's "work for food" program.
Social Life: To work in the game industry you must already have some form of social retardation. When crunch mode begins, you may only speak in code to coworkers. Immediate family and friends may be seen on brief occasions so they don't file a missing-persons report. I'm one of the lucky ones; I don't remember having any friends or family.
Hygiene: Haircuts and showers become optional in favor of more sleep time. For me, showers are a must, but my hair is sprouting wings and a tail. Pretty soon I'll look like the lead singer from Flock of Seagulls.
Stress: Anger and frustration are frequent companions. If bridges are burned, this is usually the time. Earlier this week morale was low. In a fit of anger concerning team interactions, I was heard shouting, "I feel like a kindergarten teacher. Can't everyone just keep their hands to themselves and play nice!"
Murphy's law: Any potential hazard will be encountered. I'm writing this diary from the NWC conference room. My computer refuses to function for more than five minutes without seizing up. 12/06/98
This weekend I'm taking care of my PR duties (hence this diary). Not the most exciting stuff, so I'll relate a short story from earlier this week.
David Mullich (producer), Mark Caldwell (NWC vice president and programmer), Jon Van Caneghem (NWC president, creator of all things Might and Magic, and company design visionary), and I found ourselves crowded into the sweltering office of Scott White.
Scott did all the town screens in Heroes III except the Rampart, Necropolis, and Fortress. Since he finished his 3D duties, he's turned his skills to the game's interface. Believe it or not, we were in Scott's office arguing about color: interface colors and player colors.
After much arguing about the interface colors, we decided to leave it virtually untouched. Player colors were a different subject.
Originally, we used light blue, dark blue, red, green, purple, brown, black, and white. These colors needed to change. Light blue looked like the blue used in the main menu. Brown clashed with the brown used in the general game interface. Game text disappeared against white. Black and green disappeared with the terrain colors shown on the game mini-map.
OK. We agreed some of the colors needed to change. After this, the agreements stopped. I don't know what is more ridiculous... arguing over what colors to use or the twisted logic behind the arguments. Red, blue, and dark green were safe choices. We still needed five other colors. The conversation went something like this....
"I don't want yellow. Yellow is the urine color."
"What about brown?"
"I don't like brown."
"Brown is the s**t color."
"What about pink?"
"Pink is a sissy color."
"We won't call it pink. We'll call it 'rose'."
"The rose player?"
"I don't know. If I saw a pink hero, I'd turn and run away. You know any hero secure enough to use pink as his color is bad ass."
"What about magenta?"
"What about cobalt? What about cadmium?"
"Have we accounted for all the fecal colors?"
"What about orange?"
"Phelan (our art lead) doesn't like orange. It looks bad."
"So. I don't think it looks bad."
"Fine. You tell her you want orange."
"She'll kick your ass."
"Oh. Fine. We won't use orange."
So it went. Fifteen minutes later everyone agreed to disagree, and Jon was made the final judge. Here are the final colors: red, blue, yellow, green, orange, purple, aqua, and rose (pink). 12/07/98
Today we stopped all map production. From here until we ship, I join the mapmakers and testers in playing maps and writing bugs... or so I thought.
Today, I had dropped into my lap the assignment of converting the 144-plus pages of the game manual into a help file. Anyone who has written a help file knows how huge this task can be. I could probably finish it in a day, but it requires no one bothering me for an extended period of time. Ha!
At this late stage of the production cycle, my entire day is spent meeting with people, making sure people are doing their work, and confirming that what is being done is correct. I don't have time for work. I've made the ugly evolution from game designer to middle manager.
It wasn't like this at the beginning of the project. At the beginning of the project the game designer is the screaming prophet, lost and alone in the desert (or the design process if you prefer).
In the middle of the production process the prophet is being screamed at by all his fellow coworkers who are wondering what to do because the design doc is behind schedule.
At the end of the project, everyone's a screaming prophet, and everyone is screaming at everyone else.
Sometime in the middle of all this screaming I've got to write this help file. Maybe I could give the assignment to Christian Vanover (H3 assistant director). Isn't it the job of a middle manager to delegate? 12/08/98
Yesterday I was wondering where I would find the time to write the game help file. Today I have the answer.... I think I have the flu. This doesn't feel like any 24-hour "see-ya-bye" flu either. This feels like "kneel before Zod!" flu.
All right. I've got a story for you.
Earlier today we "officially" stopped making maps. From here on out, we play, test, and polish the game. This could mean a little, or a lot. If the maps play well the first time out, revisions will be minor. If we end up chucking whole maps, we may find ourselves back to making maps. Thus, we started playing them today. JVC (Jon Van Caneghem, New World's president) ended up playing a notorious map named "Barbarian Breakout."
Ten minutes after he starts, JVC pages me over my phone intercom: "Hey Yoda." (He's been calling me Yoda lately. I don't know why. I'm not sure if I should be honored or offended. On one hand, Yoda is wise and he trains Jedi Knights. On the other hand, he is a short ugly green dude with big ears.) "Enemy hero with six behemoths (one of the highest-level creatures) knocked on my front door on week two, day one."
"Oops. I'll be right there."
As soon as I walked into JVC's office, the razzing began.
"What's with the six behemoths? Is this one of the balanced scenarios?"
"OK, OK. Something's wrong. Turn off the fog."
Jon restarts the scenario, turns off the fog of war, ends turn four times in a row, then right-clicks the enemy hero to see the extent of his forces. Aside from his other three stacks of creatures... he has one stack of six behemoths. Oops.
"All right. Open the map in the editor."
Jon opens the map in the editor. What do we discover? First, the enemy hero starts at level three, and the mapmaker (Dave Botan) has given him four stacks of creatures. In addition, the enemy hero's starting town has three of seven creature generators already prebuilt.
No wonder the enemy was able to recruit behemoths on day four.
Remember the story about the father who comes home from a bad day at work and yells at his wife? She in turn yells at her kid. The kid in turn kicks the dog.
At this point, I'm looking for a dog to kick. So, I hunt down Dave Botan. Immediately, Dave states his defense.
"Everyone says the map's too hard. It isn't. The AI's cheating." (Recently, we discovered the artificial intelligence was exploiting an undiscovered bug allowing it to recruit more creatures than were actually available.)
"The AI doesn't need to cheat. It's already got a huge advantage."
"There's a bug."
"Doesn't matter. Set all players to normal starting conditions."
At this point everyone begins to playfully dog-pile on Dave telling all the reasons why his maps suck. In the end he relented and fixed the map. 12/09/98
I'm not writing from work today. I'm writing from home. I have seven-way-straight-from-the-bottom-of-the-Amazon-flu.
With this kind of flu the logical course of action would be to rest, drink lots of fluids, watch lots of movies, maybe see a doctor. However, I am a game designer and unfamiliar with the ways of logic. A day at home with the flu means I have the opportunity to finish the H3 help file.
How pathetic can you get? On my day off to rest and get better, I use the uninterrupted time to convert a 144+ page manual into a help file.
I should get sick more often. I get more work done. 12/10/98
I'm back at work today. Good news... I finished the help file. Bad news... I still have the flu, and because I was so efficient in writing the game help file... I've been given the task of writing the map editor help file. Oh yeah, finish it by Monday.
Monday? There's so much pressure in my head, when I sniff, my eyes want to flee their sockets. My voice has the auditory consistency of sandpaper. Monday? Sure, I'll have it done by Monday. 12/11/98
Well, it's Friday night, and I have yet to see Star Trek: Insurrection. Doubt I'll be seeing it anytime soon.
One of the unmentioned symptoms of crunch time is cultural unawareness. In my time at a previous company I almost missed the entire O.J. trial. I haven't seen a movie since Starship Troopers. I'm not kidding. 12/14/98
I shouldn't have come in to work Thursday and Friday. It really pushed me over the edge. For the past two days I've been laid up with fever and chills. Remarkably, it was the one thing to take my mind off work. Aside from a froggy throat, it seems to have passed.
Enough about my illness. From here on, assume I'm always ill with the flu. 12/15/98
Today NWC (New World Computing) took a brief pause from game development to listen to Trip Hawkins (president of 3DO, NWC's parent company).
Twice a year, Trip makes a formal visit to talk about the company and where we're going as a company. It's a nice break from things.
However, Trip wasn't half as exciting as David Richie (our tools programmer) who sat next to me. Turns out David is coming down with the flu.
Over the course of the meeting, the air conditioning didn't turn on. With over 50 people crammed into a room, it got hot very fast. As the minutes passed, I could see David slowly whither.
I thought he was going to vomit. So basically, for most of the meeting, I sat envisioning how I was going to get out of the way when the volcano erupted.
Luckily, the volcano did not erupt. David left in the middle of the lecture and I haven't seen him since. 12/17/98
Welcome to the end of another working day at NWC. There is still no sign of David Richey. Another one of our programmers, John Krause, called in sick today. David Mullich (the Heroes III director) was ready to take bets on who would call in sick next. Of course, everyone blames me for getting them ill.
As far as your average NWC workday goes, this one was hectic and full of revelation.
Yes. Revelation. Only today did I look at my calendar and realize Christmas was next Friday.
Yes. Hectic. Every now and then I need to wipe my desk clean. This means catching up on all the hand-scrolled notes and stray post-its littered about my desk. When my desk is clean, I'm caught up.
This very act of cleaning makes for a semi-chaotic day. There is much gear shifting and subject changing to close dangling issues.
Add to this my usual parade of visitors, and my first chance to test multiplayer, and it takes great effort to avoid turning into a screaming monkey. Yes, I said screaming monkey.
Frequently, I find myself held hostage in my own office as a line of visitors (testers, programmers, artists, producers, etc.) quickly assemble outside my office in a short period of time, all wanting a piece of my brain.
Today it happened to occur while I was in the middle of a multiplayer game with Jeff Leggett (H3 multiplayer programmer). Simultaneously, I had three people show up and cram themselves into my small office. Each began jockeying for position to ask a question. Meanwhile, Jeff waited on the phone intercom, with Heroes III continually chiming in the background, letting me know it was my turn to play.
At this point you may apply the screaming monkey metaphor.
Despite the great potential for chaos, I asked Jeff to wait, gave my three suitors a number, told them to wait in line, then answered each of their questions.
On the surface, everything looked under control. Little did these poor souls know there was a screaming monkey, trapped in my mind's steel cage, wildly thrashing about in a desperate attempt to escape and turn me into a volcano of anger and lunacy.
When it was over, I took a deep breath, noted the walls weren't sprayed with the blood of innocent coworkers, and returned to my multiplayer game with Jeff.
Heroes II multiplayer wasn't friendly in the least. When it wasn't your turn, all you could do was sit at the computer and stare at the screen like a moron.
Well, thanks to our wonderful network programmer, Jeff Leggett, a moron you will no longer be.
Jeff has finished implementing multiplayer support. Now we're on a bug hunt. So, today, Jeff and I played a multiplayer game in the background while we went about our work.
I must admit, I had a blast. Moments like this make me forget my job is serious work. 12/18/98 Friday
Today I actually managed to catch up on all my notes. Next up, International Translation Kit. It can wait until Sunday. I don't get to enjoy these moments of accomplishment very often.
Being a game designer is nothing more than a life of delayed gratification. You spend the first month of the project "being creative," then spend the next 17 as a bricklayer implementing low-level details and boot-strapping the game design when unforeseen consequences arise.
Tomorrow we have our annual company Christmas party. I won't be going. I see my coworkers every day at work. I don't want to see them in a social environment. It'd be too weird. They'd have, like, spouses and dates and stuff, and wear dress clothes.
We've been told we can dress formal or casual. To me this means torn jeans and a food-stained white T-shirt. To everyone else, this means dress formal, because no one wants to underdress.
I don't want to see any of my coworkers dressed up. The thought frightens me. We're a bunch of geeks. We don't look good in casual wear. Formal wear will only amplify our geekiness.
Only one thing could entice me to go to the Christmas party - seeing the wives go off on the management for working their husbands so hard. I'd pay to see that... provided I wasn't on the receiving end.
By the way... hello to Chris Cross and Brian Reed, two friends I made when I briefly worked at Dreamworks Interactive (I didn't work on Trespasser). They called me today. They'd read the first entry in the Designer Diary and called to tell me what they thought. They then tied me up on the phone for the next 30 minutes while simultaneously sending me e-mail with bizarre and obscene attachments. 01/02/99 Saturday
Well, I'm back at work. The Christmas break was needed. I spent the first three days drinking eggnog, sleeping in 12- and 16-hour shifts, and watching Clinton get impeached.
After I was well rested, the eggnog was all gone, and Clintion was impeached, I did what any game design loser would do... worked on the game while on vacation. Ugh. I'm so pathetic.
My initial goal was to play existing maps. After playing five maps, it was obvious the AI hadn't been fully tested. It tended to sit back and never struck out until it had enough forces to guarantee a win.
This made for very extreme game experiences. Either you never saw the AI, or it came storming out of nowhere, knocked on your door, and politely introduced itself as your doom.
When our AI programmer (Gus Smedstad) gets back from vacation, I'll need to share my findings with him.
Well, seeing as I couldn't really play the game, I turned my attention to our 144-page game manual... much to my horror.
It turns out our second draft of the manual was full of errors. So, with red pen in hand, I promoted myself from game designer to fact checker. Over the next three days, I proceeded to bloody the pages of our beautiful manual.
To say it was tedious would be an understatement. When it was all over, I couldn't read anything if it wasn't written in fine print. 01/04/99 Monday
Today was another screaming monkey day. Why? One word: programmers.
I won't say who, but one of our programmers came into my office and proceeded to yell at me over a feature request he'd been given to program.
Why was he yelling at me? On the surface, it was because I hadn't given him enough details, or I hadn't thought through its impact enough. Or it could have been because it was simply a stupid feature, I didn't know what I was doing, and I was ruining the game.
The real reason? He wasn't sure how to program the task he'd been given, and the specified time frame was short. Instead of calming down, thinking it through, and telling me whether it could or could not be done in the given time frame, he panicked, and chose to vent at me.
Programmers are a unique breed. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. Some of my best friends are programmers.
I must admit I am fascinated. I've watched each of our team programmers code. It's very amusing. How they code gives me a unique insight to their personality. For instance...
John Bolton (lead programmer): When John programs, it looks like he's playing chess.
David Richey (tools programmer): David doesn't code. Beforehand, he thinks about his task in depth, like contemplating philosophy, then simply writes it up. Quite often you can look through David's office window and see him bent over in his chair, chin on fist, like The Thinker.
Mark Caldwell (NWC VP): You need to know Mark to really understand, but when Mark codes, it's like he's in a boxing ring, ducking shots, trading blows, and trash talking with the program.
Now take such individuals and do the unthinkable... Make them into a team. Worse yet, force them to have meetings in which they must interact on a social level and agree to work together. Worse yet, force them to interact with right-brained artists and game designers.
It's a wonder any games ever get made.
Join designer Greg Fulton as gives us his very last Designer Diary entry, which tracks the last days of Heroes of Might and Magic III. In these last few days, the team waited anxiously to approve the gold candidate. But there is no rest for Greg, as he mentions a little something about the expansion disc. Join us as we count down the final development of Heroes III. 01/07/99
Ever heard the phrase "thousand tile stare"?
It's a phrase used by our mapmakers. You get the thousand tile stare from making H3 maps all day long.
Today I got the thousand tile stare after making a map for our eventual game demo.
It's a very simple, small map, letting players experience a portion of the game. Hopefully they'll experience enough and feel compelled to buy the game. I've been calling the map "Dead and Buried."
When I finished, I gave it to Chris Vanover (H3 assistant director) to play. Chris is an expert Heroes player. He's a good gauge of the map's difficulty.
Watching Chris play was a lot of fun. It allowed me to take a break from work and finally see the game in action. However, I am the worst person to have over your shoulder when you play.
Why? I'm a backseat driver. It's a bad habit from playing console games with friends.
Thus, I watched Chris play and second-guessed him all the way. We were like two old men spitting and complaining about the best strategy as Chris clicked his way through the game. It was rather humorous. 01/08/99
Today I gave the Dead and Buried
map to a few select people to see if anyone could beat it in the allotted time frame of four game weeks.
One of my candidates was Jen Bullard. Jen is the only female tester in the QA area.
Upon entering the test area, I found Jennifer burning a candle at her desk. She wasn't afraid to comment aloud how everyone else in the test area doesn't wash their clothes often enough. She thinks they stink.
No sooner did I sit down to watch Jen play than the verbal bantering between the testers began.
Ryan Den, another one of our testers, was sure he found a bug and asked aloud if anyone had encountered the same bug. No one had. Immediately everyone began shouting "user error." Ryan thought they were all high... until he realized it was user error. Everyone then proceeded to playfully tear into Ryan yet again.
I must admit, our testers are pretty cool. Their interactions are quite amusing. They banter with the voracity of a knife fight, but it's rarely cruel. 01/14/99
Last night was my last chance to revise the game manual. Thus, I decided to pull an all-nighter to finish it. This was my first time being at NWC so late. I also experienced something completely new.
I had been drinking many free Cokes when my bladder reminded me who was really in charge. Without hesitation, I raced to the bathroom. I opened the door. It was dark. This is not unusual. The lights are hooked up to a motion sensor. To save energy, they turn on and off based on the presence of a moving body. Confident the lights would turn on, I strode into the bathroom.
The lights did not illuminate.
Fumbling around in the dark, I was able to find the light switch and flip it on.
Fumbling around some more, I found the door handle and exited the bathroom.
Moving quickly to Mark Caldwell's office (Mark and George were also working late), I told him, "The bathroom lights won't turn on." He said, "Yeah. The bathroom lights don't turn on after midnight." I asked, "How do you go to the bathroom with the lights off?" He answered, "Usually I just feel my way to the urinal."
"I need to take a crap."
"Hey, I wouldn't know anything about that. Get the flashlight from George."
"I need a flashlight?"
So, I walked to George's office.
"I need the bathroom flashlight."
Giggling to himself under his breath, George reached into his desk and gave me a pocket flashlight. With flashlight in hand I returned to the bathroom where everything went according to plan.
I know game production has its odd moments, but... this one was really odd. 01/18/99
In the last days of a game's production, the game designer makes a desperate attempt to prevent features from being cut to make the deadline. However, if I got all the features I wanted, the game would never ship. Thus, there is always a tug of war between the game designer, management, programmers, and artists, to decide what gets into the game and what gets pushed back to the expansion or sequel.
Today I was doing my best to get a new hero into the game without too much additional programming or art. I realized I could get the results I needed by simply adding a new graphic and customizing an existing game hero. Even better, I could get the graphic from existing art in the intro movie. All the artist had to do was crop a freeze-frame from the movie and give it to our asset manager to be put into the game. I could customize the hero in the editor. All the programmers had to do was recognize the character's unique identification.
Well, we did.
I wonder how much longer I can push my luck. 01/19/99
I have become the Walmart floor manager.
No. I haven't quit my job.
Let me explain.
At this stage in the making of the game, I find myself spending most of my time walking the halls with my Notepad of Oppression waiting for people to call out my name.
The notepad is a list of issues needing resolution. Most people find the notepad humorous unless their name is on it. Ironically, I end up putting my name on the notepad more than anyone else's (I'm oppressing myself).
Regardless, when I am walking the halls and someone calls out my name, I duck into their office to answer their questions. Sometimes this means getting on their phone and calling someone else to clear up an issue. If I don't have the answer, I'm the intermediary.
Thus, I feel like the Walmart floor manager, roaming the isles, taking care of arising issues. All I really need is the blue vest. 01/20/99
For a moment, consider most game manuals. Usually, a manual details the game interface and introduces you to the various game elements. Rarely do these manuals give you true game statistics.
For Heroes III , we wanted to buck this trend. Using the Heroes II strategy guide as a model, we decided to make a big manual loaded with information. This is exactly what we did - 144 pages.
Today we signed off on the manual. Well, no sooner did the ink dry than we discovered some errors. It was terrifying. I literally sat at my desk, looking at the errors I had discovered, and heard the manual mocking me with the chittering of a wild hyena.
There was nothing I could do. It was carved in stone. Now understand, most manuals ship with some errors. This is what the Readme is for. However, several people had gone over this manual time and again, and still there were errors.
I'll never make a big manual again. It's too much upkeep considering the fluidity of game design.
I'm sure I'll lose some sleep over this. 1/25/99
Today the Coke machine caught fire.
Let me repeat this. Today the Coke machine caught fire.
Since we started crunching, around 7:00pm each night, Mark Caldwell (NWC VP) has been unlocking the Coke machine for free drinks to go with our evening meal. We don't continue pressing the selection buttons for the various drinks. Instead, we literally open up the front half of this big, red, half-ton refrigerator, made to withstand the assaults of the most juvenile of delinquents.
Now, I'm not exactly clear on the details, but one of the testers pulled open the front door to grab a soda from inside. Apparently, some of the electrical wires were sheared, followed by fire and smoke.
Upon seeing the fire and smelling the smoke, the tester grabbed Ben Bent (NWC office manager and part-time game director). He then pointed out the fire in the Coke machine.
With perfect calm, Ben simply unplugged the Coke machine. Poof. The fire went away.
I must admit, I can't help but see the fire in the Coke machine as a metaphor for Heroes III in production. A fire starts, someone panics, and someone else calmly solves the problem.
Truthfully, it's the story of the game production process. 2/07/99 Sunday
Today could be the day.
We've decided to make a "final candidate" CD-ROM for 3DO approval. A final candidate is what we consider "ready to ship." We then send the final candidate to 3DO for them to do shrink-wrap testing.
Tonight, no one leaves the building until the game is finished. 2/08/99 Monday
It's 5:00am Monday morning.
We just started burning the final candidate.
About half the team is still here.
We've been crunching too long. Everyone's burnt.
About 15 minutes ago, Mark starting broadcasting Money For Nothing over everyone's speakerphone.
I am literally weak-kneed. Except for writing this entry, all I intend to do is just sit in my office chair and do everything I possibly can to do nothing.
As of 8:30 Saturday, February 13, we're calling it good Barring last-second crash bugs, the game is done.
It's 9:30, and with the realization the game is done, already I'm beginning to crash.
After crunching for so long, the crash is the aftereffect. This is the time when you finally realize you can relax and return to a somewhat normal life. This is also the flag signaling the release of all the pent-up stress and illness you've been holding off by sheer will for the past six months. Thus... crash.
We're done. 02/14/99
Four days after announcing Heroes has gone gold, we're already talking about the expansion pack. Already, I've assembled my map makers. They're good people. With H3 under their belts they should make even better maps for the expansion.
The downside? Chris Vanover is moving onto a different project. Technically Chris was H3's assistant director, but I adopted him as my assistant designer. He was a big help in many of the grunt areas. I was hoping to hand the expansion off to Chris so I could concentrate on the next Heroes.
No such luck.
Ultimately, this means vacation must wait.
Where is a monkey boy when you need one? 02/19/99
David Mullich's (Heroes III director) wife was pregnant and expecting about the same time as E3 last year (Atlanta '98). So, he couldn't go and demonstrate the game.
I was the next logical choice. I know the game better than anyone else, and when needed, I can turn on the charm.
Now don't get me wrong, when I have demoed the game, it has been a delight. Yet, as a game, Heroes III doesn't demo well. It's a turn-based game. It's not a first-person shooter or real-time strategy game. There's no real immediate reward for your attention span to latch onto.
However, Heroes does have a very large, very dedicated following. Thus, most people who want to see Heroes are already fans. This was the case at E3.
At E3 I did the vast majority of the presentations. I did so many I ended up losing my voice. Almost all the people who saw the game were fans of Heroes and liked what they saw. We were so successful, people were taking chairs from the other game stations to sit in front of ours.
Well, the downside to my work at E3 was... I became the demo guy. The downside of being the demo guy is traveling.
I hate traveling.
Once I arrive at my destination, there's no problem. I'm just impatient by nature. I'm also 6'1" and hate sitting in supercramped airline seats.
So, today I got to fly up to 3DO with Peter Ryu (MM7 producer), Keith Francart (MM7 director), and Jeff Blatner (new Heroes producer) to give presentations on MM7 and Heroes III to our Ubi Soft partners and a smattering of European journalists.
As much as I hated getting up at 5:30am and traveling to San Francisco (less than one week after going gold), the trip was amusing for a number of reasons.
Since I have been at New World, Peter Ryu has always worn shorts and sandals. For the presentation, Pete was ordered to wear pants and shoes. Throughout the day, he was wincing as the shoes rubbed his feet raw.
The other amusing part was hanging out with the French chicks from Ubi Soft and the European press.
Last time I was at 3DO I did an H3 presentation to a number of European journalists. Not a French woman among them. It was different this time, and dare I say, worth the trip. 02/22/99
David Mullich (H3 director), George Ruof (H3 programmer), and I are the only members of the team in the building today. Everyone else is on vacation.
Over the weekend I began my self-rehabilitation for returning to the real world.
When you do nothing but work 12-14 hours a day, seven days a week, and then it all comes to an abrupt halt, you suddenly find you have all this spare time on your hands.
Ultimately, you become bored. You don't know what to do with yourself because your "normal" situation meant working on the game... but the game is finished. Normal has become different and no longer normal.
A logical assumption for curing this boredom would be a vacation. Not yet. I've got to write the design for the expansion disc. I've got two weeks before it is due. After hammering out the specs, everyone will be briefed, then I can go on vacation.
I've got it all planned out. I haven't seen my parents since Christmas of 1997. So, I'm going to go back home and sit in the rocking chair in front of my dad's big-screen TV and watch nothing but cable television for at least two weeks. You heard me. Nothing but CNN Headline News for two weeks. If by then I'm not properly vegetated, I'll watch it for another week. Then I'll track down my old high school girlfriend and see if she's still single.
I've set up an e-mail address for your feedback about the game when it hits the shelves. This e-mail is merely for player feedback and suggestions. I will be the one reading the e-mails, and most likely, I won't be answering any of them. So, don't flame me if I don't respond. [[email protected]
I've enjoyed writing these diaries. I wish I had been able to dedicate more time to them.
My apologies to Elliott Chin (who made these diaries possible). Elliott wanted me to talk about the design philosophy behind H3. After practicing design philosophy 12-14 hours a day, I couldn't bring myself to write a diary about it. So, I thought I'd do "a day in the life." I hope you enjoyed my tongue-in-cheek account.
I leave you with the following words I once heard the great Jon Van Caneghem speak, "When it's all over you'll forget how hard it was and do it all over again." He's right. We will.

2023.06.06 18:32 MydadisadivaAMA haha...I swapped spit with a mouse, at a golf tournament.
2023.06.06 18:08 ACleverForgery As a player, how talk to my DM about dissatisfaction with a world that is too forgiving?
A little vent about my most recent game.
My DM seems to be going easy on us, and I don’t know how to tell him that for me, it makes the world feel more real and role play/mechanics more satisfying when NPCs aren’t always forgiving and obliging.
Our party was outside of town when we got word that our barbarian’s NPC love interest had been kidnapped and taken to a noble’s manor in a violent altercation that left bystanders severely wounded. We hurried back to town, and broke into the manor to rescue her. Most of us wanted it to be a stealth mission. I came in the front door as a scout, lookout and distraction (bard asking about auditioning for an upcoming festival, and then asking to use the washroom upstairs), but the barbarian couldn’t wait - she killed two guards and left the lady of the house tied up and unconscious. The fairy ranger cast Charm Person on the nobleman, and the druid panicked and summoned a swarm that caused lots of chaos and property destruction.
Turns out it had all been a misunderstanding - the NPC had been safe the whole time! The man who kidnapped her isn’t evil, he’s basically a sad self-sacrificing puppy who only wants to have a scary reputation so that he doesn’t actually have to hurt anyone!
The NPC and her “kidnapper” emerged from another room, saw the chaos and convinced the nobleman (who had broken out of the charm and was furious at being mind-controlled) to let us go. So ultimately some NPCs saved us from other NPCs/the consequences of our actions. It certainly was a relief not to have the nobleman call down a squadron of guards on us, sure, and it was the end of the session anyway. I wasn’t bothered yet.
In the morning, then nobleman sent us an invitation to meet with him. We already had plans for the day, and when we asked to delay the meeting, we were told “sure, tomorrow is fine too”. Maybe the DM wanted to give us some breathing room after the chaos? It felt like meeting with the nobleman was important to get around to, but not urgent at all.
The NEXT day (so, a good 36 hours after invading the mansion), we arrived for brunch with the nobleman. I prepared an eloquent apology before the session, using my in-character knowledge of his pride and sense of duty to the town, his violent tendencies (we had found a prisoner in a closet, whipped within an inch of his life), the importance of maintaining the “all is well” facade, etc. As the bard and party Face, I am already pretty charismatic, but I cast Enhance Ability on myself to be extra persuasive.
The DM never asked for a single persuasion roll.
And it wasn’t like I got “wow, that was great, you don’t even have to roll for that” kind of feedback. The nobleman didn’t act proud or violent or delusional like we’d been told he was by every other NPC in town. He seemed like an exhausted parent, like as long as we weren’t outright rude to him and acknowledged that what we did was wrong, he would have let us off the hook. He even mentioned he knew we had met with a rival noble house after the altercation in his home, but that didn’t seem to bother him. He barely seemed angry and made no real demands of us - letting us choose between community service and time in the stocks as punishment. And when we said we had been planning to leave town to help some local merchants, he said, “sure, that counts as community service. “
After the session, it took me a few days to realize why I felt kind of deflated after that session. I felt superfluous.
I don’t know if this is anything worth bringing up to the DM, and if so, how I should do it.
He knows I’ve run this adventure as a DM before, and I want to be clear that this has nothing to do with “your version of the characters is wrong”.
How do I say “when NPCs save us, or don’t make us earn our victories, it can feel like the work I’ve put into my character is wasted” and “do the nicer-than-expected versions of all these NPCs mean something in-game? Is this a sign that this noble is actually a flawed yet ultimately good and trustworthy guy? Or do you as a DM just not like role playing bad people but our characters should still be afraid of them? Informed evil, vs visibly evil?”
K this is long, thanks for getting this far. Thoughts welcome, just be nice to me, please.

2023.06.06 17:51 Existence-ispain Possible Shaman build ideas
By Shaman I'm talking about using the elements fire, ice, lightning. Closest comparison is Shamans from wow enhancement to be specific
I'm thinking Dragonknight would be best for this with skills like
Molten weapons Stonefisy Stone fist Spiked armor Lava whip Fiery breath/grip Inferno Ash cloud
Basically most of earthen heart and ardent flame. All would fit the fire element.
For Ice and shock, you'd pretty much have to use a destruction staff(weapon skill line) in one hand or both and use skills with only ice or shock morphs as fire is already covered. Maybe some mage guild skills too.
Warden could be another class but in thinking it would be a better HealeTank where Dragonknight would be the better DPS/Tank and have more elemental like skills.

2023.06.06 12:17 Emergency-Nebula5005 [Complete] [65,000] [Cosy Murder/mystery] A Tinker with Death
Hello fellow readers and writers :)
Is anyone up for a beta read of a small coastal town cosy? Tagline: As dark family secrets are uncovered, old passions and hatreds are reawakened. And someone is willing to kill to keep the truth buried.
Blurb: Jill never expected to inherit a farm from a grandfather she barely knew, but life is full of surprises. At first, it seems like a dream come true: a chance to escape the city, and start anew on the picturesque South East English coast. Urged on by her adult daughter, Jill makes a leap of faith, determined to make the most of this fantastic change of fortune.
But dreams can turn into nightmares in the blink of an eye.
After a furious row with her ex-fiancé, Leo, followed by a sleepless night, Jill glimpses a mysterious woman flitting around the farmyard. Following the wraith through fields and woodlands, Jill reaches a waterfall, slips and almost drowns – in the same spot where her mother drowned, thirty-odd years ago. It’s all downhill from there, when the farm burns down and Leo turns up dead.
Suddenly, Jill finds herself caught up in a web of intrigue and murder. Lurking among the neighbours and family who welcomed her back to her childhood home, is a killer. No longer certain who she can trust, but certain that her mother’s death was not the accident it seemed, Jill must solve the mystery of her mother’s death, if she is to survive and carve herself a new life in the not-so peaceful countryside.
Excerpt: (This is Chapter 3; Yesterday, Jill received a mysterious letter from a solicitor, decided it could only be bad news, and promptly shoved it in a drawer).
TW. Mild bad language, reference to a police officer finding cannabis.
From downstairs crockery rattled; a female voice on the radio croaked about the joys of being lost in France. My daughter’s more dulcet tones drowned out the chorus with her own ‘Oh-la-la-las.’ Groaning, I rolled out of bed, then remembered it was the first of February today – I’d made it through January – at last!
Minutes later seated at the kitchen table, I stared with bleary eyed envy at the fruit of my womb. Oh, to be young again! Sophie’s light blonde hair was pulled back in a high pony tail, her clear green eyes sparkled, her cheeks glowed with health. Talk about bushy haired, bright eyed and eager to greet the day. Out-loud I said, ‘What time did you get in last night?’ ‘Oh don’t!’ Sophie rambled on about stopping someone for speeding, only to find the driver was disqualified and driving around with enough weed to be classified as a dealer. ‘Wouldn’t you think they’d at least stick to the speed limit? I mean! And it was ten minutes from dismissal. Instead I had to find a custody cell and start a report. This new system’s horrendous. It takes forever to load! In the writing room … oh, that reminds me. I need a couple of pens.’ She jumped up to rummage through kitchen drawers, still chattering on: ‘In the entire writing room, only one terminal in ten connects to our tablets …’ her voice trailed away. A drawer slammed shut. ‘Mum, what’s this?’ She pointed the envelope towards me as though it were a warrant. I squinted, then waved it away. ‘Nothing. Nothing to do with you.’
‘It’s from a solicitor.’
‘A solicitor in Sussex.’ She slapped the envelope onto the table, directly in front of me.
I stifled a yawn. ‘I know. Any chance of a cuppa?’
‘Don’t change the subject.’ She folded her arms. ‘It’s something to do with your granddad isn’t it?’ The old bastard who’d rehomed me like an unwanted puppy after my mum’s death. I smiled grimly, pushed back from the table and nudged at Sophie to step away from the worktop where the kettle lived. Knowing as soon as my back was turned, she’d pounce on the envelope. ‘So he’s finally kicked the bucket. He’s probably left me some hideous knick-knacks. I’m not interested.’ Amazingly, my hand didn’t shake as I poured boiling water into the mugs; then hurriedly added a tea-bag to each. I glanced over my shoulder, hoping Sophie hadn’t noticed my senior moment. She wouldn’t have noticed if an elephant had waltzed in and demanded breakfast. The torn envelope was on the table, the letter in Sophie’s hand. Good. She could deal with whatever it was the solicitor wanted. Or give me a synopsis. I slopped the tea-bags into the sink and reached for the biscuit barrel. ‘Mum … mum …’ Sophie’s voice sounded hollow, as though summoned from the bottom of her stomach. I turned; she clutched the letter in one hand, the other clutched, white knuckled at the table. Oh lawd, the old man had died and somehow saddled me with all his debts. ‘What is it? What’s wrong?’ I demanded. Wide eyes fixed on me, Sophie whispered, ‘He’s left you everything. Lower Beechcroft Farm, outbuildings, land, fishing rights, it’s all yours. You’re a property millionaire.’ I stumbled over to the nearest chair, missed the seat and went sprawling to the floor. ‘Mum!’ Sophie crouched beside me, while I shook my head in disbelief. Unexpected tears stung against my cheeks. No more pretending to care about the displays of cheese at Fresh Fields … I can sign this house over to Sophie, maybe even pay off the remainder mortgage. Things seemed to be getting serious between her and Robert … most likely he’d move in, but that was none of my business … Reading from the same hymn sheet, Sophie sang, ‘No more crappy jobs for you, you’ll be lady of the manor, have a few paying guests, a few cream teas…’ ‘Wine evenings!’ I corrected and suddenly we were laughing through the tears, hugging each other tightly. At that moment, a voice echoed from the hallway. ‘What’s wrong? Has someone died?’
Sophie recovered first. ‘Hi Uncle Leo – no … well, yes, but no-one we really knew.’ Grasping Sophie’s arm I hauled myself up with a warning squeeze and an urgent shake of my head to say keep quiet. ‘Leo. What do you want?’ I stared accusingly at my ex-fiancé. Long ago, back in the dark ages, we’d been briefly engaged. By brief, I mean blink and you’d miss it. Part of his charm had been the easy going friendship he’d formed with a then fourteen year old Sophie – she’d started calling him ‘Uncle’ off her own bat. As for the other part of his charm … that would be the easy going friendship he formed with other women. Neat crew cut hair, twinkly blue eyes and a talent for making knock-off gear from the local market look like designer clobber, Leo had a lot going for him. And he was right – I couldn’t blame him if other women found him irresistible. What I did blame him for was his inability to resist sleeping with them – in my bed – on my sheets! At first I wanted to kill him. But that was long ago. These days, I tolerated him, because to give the devil his due, he’s always been decent to Sophie. ‘Wow, that’s not very welcoming. I can drop by to see the most beautiful girl in the world, can’t I?’ He grinned, hitched a buttock onto the table, and corrected himself, ‘The two most beautiful girls in the world.’ He did look good, in a pale pink shirt, grey blazer and faded denim jeans. But I hardened my heart. ‘It’s my house, Leo. You don’t just walk in.’ Sophie shot me a half-pleading, half-warning look. ‘I’ve got a court appearance today. Uncle Leo wanted to use the car, so he said he’d drive me into court, and pick me up.’ The car was in Sophie’s name – but Leo had put the money for it up front – so I could hardly say anything. ‘Well, he should at least knock.’ ‘Yes, mum. Sorry, mum. Can you wait outside, Uncle Leo? I’ll be ten minutes.’ She rushed for the stairs and thundered up to her room.
Making no move to haul his arse off the table, Leo swung his leg and smiled at me. ‘If you’re trying to get your feet back under my table, forget it!’ I said crossly, and felt even crosser when he laughed. Trying to ignore him, I slammed around the kitchen, pulling out a Tupperware pre-packed with sandwiches from the fridge and adding a banana, before making fresh coffee for Sophie to take – Neasden magistrates’ courts didn’t have a café, only vending machines. ‘Tea for me. Two sugars,’ Leo quipped. ‘You were told to wait outside.’ ‘Jill, don’t be like this.’ Settling back further on the table, he twisted his head to peer at the opened post. ‘Off the table.’ I folded the all-important letter back into the envelope. ‘Hmm, solicitors, eh? Who have you pissed off now? And why were you on the floor, crying?’ Laughing, and any tears were tears of joy. ‘Off the table, for the last time!’ I snapped. The coffee perked; I decanted it into a travel mug, and added, ‘If you must know, I’ve got the sack. So I’m broke.’ Hands on hips, I taunted, ‘Can you lend me two hundred quid?’ We glared at each other. Sophie walked in, breaking the tension, 'Mum? Uncle Leo?' With a quick smile for Sophie, who looked so smart and official in her best uniform, I handed over the lunchbox and travel mug, ‘Knock ‘em dead. Take care.’ Sophie kissed my forehead, 'Thanks, Mum. It’s all on body-worn and I’ve made the case watertight. This guy’s an idiot trying his luck. Anyhow, I'll call you later.’ That meant Sophie was staying over at Robert's tonight. I forced a tight smile and nodded. Puckering his lips, Leo leaned in for a kiss. I turned away. He chuckled and followed Sophie into the lounge. The front door slammed shut; a childish parting shot from my ex-fiancé. 'Arsehole,' I muttered.
With the house to myself, I examined the letter – twice. It looked kosher. If it was a joke, I was about to find out. Pen and paper ready, I tapped the solicitor’s number into my phone, took a deep breath, and pressed dial.

Gonna write a 10-page essay for 2 comments and a 33% upvote rate but whatever
The Ace Attorney fanbase is generally more analytically intelligent than most other visual novel fanbases, so it's very disappointing to see so many people lulled by AAI2's cheap parlor tricks while failing to grasp the beauty of AAI. Truly the biggest L for this subreddit.
Let's start with the overarching story: AAI is about an international smuggling ring, and AAI2 is about a man who tricks people into committing murder. That alone should dictate which game is better, but everyone seems to love Simon Keyes because of how random and unpredictable the twist was. I fail to see why the smuggling ring is so slept-on; perhaps it's too realistic or down-to-earth and the community would rather have a final villain plotting to steal the moon? But more on that later.
AAI has the biggest cases of "Seinfield is unfunny" in the series, because AAI2 is an unofficial translation and thus more accessible to people. On the other hand, AAI is only available as a DS cartridge (rather expensive), the only game not available on the 3DS eshop or Steam. Of course most people played AAI2 before AAI. SO MANY things got ruined by AAI2. I honestly think this is one of the reasons AAI2 did not get a localization.
EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: Given all the discussion and media on AAI2, and lack thereof for AAI, the mass amounts of lurkers who don't comment will definitely have experienced (maybe played, maybe watched a playthrough) AAI2 before AAI. And those people vote on polls and decide by upvoting which opinions they like. So sure, more power to you if you played AAI before AAI2, but I still stand by my point that your 200 lurking supporters have never even played Ablaze and the overall community opinion is skewed by the mass exposure of AAI2 and the obscurity of AAI.
Let's see some of the highlights: The Great Thief Yagatarasu
- Hit the hardest by this. Kay Faraday parading around the fact that she is the Yagatarasu in AAI2 is vastly different from her doing the same in Kidnapped and Ablaze. In AAI, starting from the first case, the Yagatarasu is this mysterious thief that supposedly has a lot of intel on the smuggling ring and we only get to see his silhouette and calling card. And don't forget his theme, Yagatarasu - The Gentleman Thief, which really does set the mood and fit him perfectly during the fleeting moments it plays. Kay only pretended to be the thief in two cases. I think the scarcity of the Yagatarasu appearances is what really makes the reveal so intriguing.
Yeah, and the final reveal: be honest here. The twist of it being Byrne, Calisto and Badd would have hit much harder on everyone's first playthrough of AAI without knowing anything from AAI2. What really dampens the Yatagarasu is the fact that he is brought up too many times by Kay in AAI2 (and even just her soundtrack name). Also the fact that the Yagatarasu calling card is the inverted version of the smuggling ring leader's instruction cards, to send a message that the Yagatarasu was only a few steps behind the ringleader, was absolutely brilliant and a much better last-minute twist than anything else the series ever came up with. Calisto Yew/Shih-na
- She was with Lang for his first appearance, and every consecutive one. That's what made her reveal so impactful. After AAI2 came along, she was just another one-off character. To be honest, the twist that she was Calisto Yew was completely unexpected, although maybe I should have realized beforehand. I also think the way she is finally cornered is pretty awesome. Setting alight the coat to reveal the Bahbalese ink burning green, pretty symbolic of her smuggling acts finally brought to light. Shi-Long Lang character development -
I'm surprised how no one mentions this. It's on the same level as Sebastian's development, and I think the only reason it's so slept-on is because in AAI2, the cases are normally so dull that you have no other choice but to focus on the characters, while AAI Lang shares the stage with the rest of the plot. The way he goes from respectfully hating on prosecutors as a super serious officer to "Lang Zi says: ...just go already!" and supporting Edgeworth in his trial after the credits is super awesome. Him losing his position in Interpol is worse than Yuri Cosmos getting demoted after Turnabout For Tomorrow in terms of discomfort food. I feel like the way Lang is introduced in AAI2 really does discredit all his character development in AAI.
Now let's compare all aspects of each game: Case 1 (general):
Visitor > Target. Visitor is the most underrated case in the series, and Target is a 3-hour long snooze-fest. Target is a case 1 yet fails to be an intro case and thus is not good, that's what it boils down to. Case 1 (witnesses):
Visitor == Target. Visitor brought back Maggey who is one of the blandest characters in the series, but Target's defendant wasn't any better. Target also managed to fumble de Killer's appearance into a very boring confrontation, so they are about tied. Case 1 (culprit, single-case):
Portsman > Knightley. The prosecutorial interactions were much more fun than that overconfident bodyguard.
Example -- Portsman: It's a possibility. Maybe your salary's been cut so much that life is getting a little too rough to handle...? Gumshoe: I'll have you know that I eat three square meals every day, pal! ...OK, so all three of them happen to be instant noodles, but... Portsman: Poor thing. What an evil prosecutor you were paired up with. And what a motive, no? Case 1 (culprit, whole game):
Knightley > Portsman. Sure. The case 1 culprit can have a huge impact on the overarching story. Knightley was one of the better plotwise characters of AAI2. Case 2 (general):
Airlines > Imprisoned. Airlines just edges out Imprisoned slightly, but I admit Imprisoned is the only AAI2 case that deserves all the praise it gets. But I think the twists and turns were just a bit better for Airlines, especially the final Logic flashback segment as Lablanc slowly fell over the railing. Case 2 (witnesses):
Airlines > Imprisoned. Zinc Lablanc carries the entire case, like Luke Atmey did. Rhoda Teneiro was also cool. Jay Elbird and Frank Sahwit can't compare, and even Keyes' performance in this case, even knowing that he manipulated Knightley's death, doesn't quite reach Airlines' level of beautiful simplicity here. Dogen was just a plot device in this episode. Case 2 (culprit, single-case):
Meele == Roland. Both had godawful motives and mild characters. Case 2 (culprit, whole game):
Roland > Meele. Of course, because Roland got a whole other backstory while Meele stayed the same. Case 3 (general):
Inherited > Kidnapped. Yeah, alright. Who knew that letting you play as Gregory Edgeworth in the events leading up to DL-6 would be more interesting for the audience than actually coming up with an original idea? F for effort, I guess. Case 3 (witnesses):
Inherited > Kidnapped. Mainly because Ema Skye was absolutely useless in Kidnapped. Lauren Paups was also pretty bad. Inherited only had some meh witnesses, nothing outstanding, but still better than Kidnapped. Case 3 (culprit, single-case):
Gustavia > Lance. Well, yeah. Lance did kill only in self defense, while Gustavia and Dover had a whole storyline going. I feel like Kidnapped was meant to be a breath of fresh air from the constant murder grind, like Stolen. Too bad neither case ended up being great. Case 3 (culprit, whole game):
Lance > Gustavia. Well, not quite Lance himself, but the effect it had by prompting Ernest Amano to forge evidence, get caught and questioned, and give up the evidence to the KG-8 incident was pretty impactful. Gustavia, while the first of many things that ticked off Keyes, was also the only part of his story that wasn't really carefully intertwined with anything else. Case 4 (general):
Reminiscence == Forgotten. Interestingly, the one case everyone seems to like in AAI is actually not that great, all things considered. Forgotten was a very slow case with boring investigation sequences all around, but Reminiscence had terrible character interactions and was paced horribly. Case 4 (witnesses):
Reminiscence > Forgotten. Detective Badd blows everyone else out of the water. The Judge was alright, and Gumshoe was pretty subpar. But still, better than whatever AAI2 was trying to do with Lotta Hart and Nicole Swift. Case 4 (culprit, single-case):
Calisto == Blaise. I can't really say one was better than the other. Calisto's double murder and escape managed to top the previous 3-4 for "best loose end", but Blaise was no slouch either. Case 4 (culprit, whole game):
Calisto > Blaise. Doesn't need an explanation.
Now for the opinion that will get me downvoted. Turnabout Ablaze is a better case than The Grand Turnabout, both as a finale and in general.
Firstly, Colias Palaeno was a better final plot device character than John Marsh. Palaeno was introduced as this very suspicious character, only to later become the most helpful witness in the entire series, and the only person who didn't lie, ever. Despite overdoing his coupon-dealing gimmick, it never really got old or tedious. And come on, he was just a cool guy all around. His interactions with Alba were also very interesting considering the history between their countries. Palaeno is the perfect example of how to write a compelling plot device character.
On the other hand, John Marsh never really made an impact and his edgy teenager persona was just meh. Him refusing to take revenge on Dogen in the end was cool, but he was still not as good a character overall. His kidnapping was mainly to develop Courtney's character, but even she was not that interesting in the end. And his twist of being the president's son was very underwhelming, if I'm being honest.
Every case 5 is traditionally the resolution of two different murders. For AAI, it was Ka-Shi Nou murdered in the Allebahstian embassy, and Manny Coachen murdered in the Bahbalese embassy on the same night. For AAI2, it was the body double's murder out of the blue and the real president's murder 12 years ago. Surely Ablaze has a much better premise already.
Ablaze is a very symmetrical, well-organized case with the themes of duality. Allebahst has strict migration laws and an old army general as the ambassador, who appears to be a kindly old man. Bahbal is a very lax tourist country with a young advertising ambassador who is suspiciously cheerful. And yet, Ambassador Alba is the villain behind the smuggling ring while Ambassador Palaeno is hopelessly clueless about his secretary Coachen. I really like the dynamic amongst the characters here. Even Coachen gets characterization from Palaeno's relationship with him and sadness at his death.
Honestly, I thought the premise of the country split in two was a very intriguing setup. Even for people who aren't super interested in history-esque topics, the case should provide a novel setting. The competition to see which embassy had the legitimate statue, the goodwill ambassadorship involving the Steel Samurai, the reuniting of Cohdopia, everything really felt like something big and exciting was happening.
How many people actually played Ablaze fully? I bet half the people who hate on Turnabout Ablaze here don't even know that the embassy was set on fire in the case. They only watched Alba's breakdown, went on the wiki to find out the two victims, and called it a day before formulating their opinion. They missed out on everything, like the safe-opening puzzle and the secret of the Yagatasaru key/"knife", and figuring out how the two statues and the body got transported between the embassies.
Unlike Ablaze's very uniform and straightforward setup, The Grand Turnabout is just a speed-rap of a case with very sporadic events that feel like it's just thrown at you randomly so you never get bored of one single topic. So right after exposing Blaise as the killer, you find the president of Zheng Fa is murdered. You go to question someone, but she is currently judging Roland's trial for the murder of Knightley. Then Blaise turns out to not get in any trouble for what happened in Forgotten. Then Marsh gets kidnapped and you decide to join the trial and help Sebastian. He then runs away and you stall for time until Marsh is found and Sebastian comes back and proves that Blaise tampered with evidence. So he gets arrested after all and Roland is guilty. Then you get a mysterious radio call telling you to go to an orphanage, where you find out that the real president (along with some other guy) was killed there 12 years ago. With a very tedious Little Thief investigation sequence. Now you trace back who called you on the radio and pin every single crime in the game onto him. And Dogen helped, a bit. The end.
There were zero compelling aspects of the case. It feels like the case was entirely written to showcase character development for half the cast, and the actual plot points are half-assed and not bothered with. The final reveal is just a cheap cop-out by going "oh actually A and B are connected. Wow!". I feel like The Grand Turnabout is actually the worst-written case of AAI2 in terms of sheer writing. Every event is random until the final reveal. The way the events proceed is also very weird and feels very unpolished. The investigation drags on way longer than Alba's confrontation does. No way people like this mess of a case more than Ablaze just because it has more rewarding/overstimulating moments at times and uses shock value.
It's funny that AAI has the overarching plot be straightforward and each individual case have its twists and turns, while AAI2 is the exact opposite. Each case basically feels like the game just leads you along a long, drawn-out and boring path to the answer while the actual overarching plot is this convoluted, improbable steaming mess of a story.
I really don't think Keyes was all that special. Sure, there were minute hints scattered throughout the game before he is revealed to be the mastermind. Sure, he had a compelling motive. But in the end, it all boils down to "oh remember all that? well, the major twist is that they are connected!". Just a weak cop-out finale that manages to be flashy enough to woo half the audience. But what I really dislike about Keyes is the way he was caught. I personally think that final villains should try to not get caught. Keyes was so cocky that he was toying with Edgeworth on purpose. Kidnapping Kay and John, teasing Edgeworth over the radio, he basically flew too close to the sun and paid the price. Alba, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with Edgeworth or the rest of the cast.
I think half of what makes a compelling villain is how they try to avoid being caught. Alba managed to stay low and avoid detection for 10 years, while still running the smuggling ring. His confrontations felt very calm and collected, and just overall very professional at maintaining his innocence. Unlike Keyes who just keeps laughing at you and mocking you. Sure, both characters had high egos, but bottom line: Keyes got too cocky from a few successful manipulations while Alba maintained his confidence in his position which he has decades of experience in.
Yes, Alba was very stubborn and makes the final fight drag on, but that should be a good thing for his character. Shows he is very experienced and well-prepared for law enforcement. Honestly, my one complaint is that his fight didn't drag on even longer; I think that him losing his ambassadorship was a bit too easy and he should have put up more of a fight regarding that. People say Alba was too generically evil, but I think that he is actually unique in the way that he is the first pure villain
as a final villain. Remember, von Karma and Gant were not full-time criminals; they were law enforcement who killed once and then were caught trying to cover up their crime. Engarde was an actor who only cared about publicity. Godot was, well, not exactly a criminal. Gavin was a lawyer who did anything to win his case and held grudges. Up until then, we never had a professional criminal as a final villain until Alba. Taking someone like him down should be expected to be difficult, long and tedious. Also his breakdown was much more rewarding than Keyes' getting beat up by animals, mostly because Keyes kinda deserved more than that. If Keyes had been punished harder, his breakdown might have been more satisfying than Alba's, to be fair.
AAI also has a better soundtrack than AAI2, and you can fight me on that. AAI2 may have some earwormy tracks, but it's like this: AAIs soundtrack actually sounds like it was composed for the game. Tracks like the Yagatarasu's theme (not Kay, the actual Yagatarasu) and Torn Apart Countries fit the mood and set the grandiose atmosphere perfectly. AAI2s soundtrack is just the artist taking a picture of the character, showing it to a composer, and going "make a theme for him". The Man Who Masterminds the Game may be more catchy than The Enemy Who Surpasses the Law, but the latter definitely suits its respective character and confrontation as a whole more. And I just gotta appreciate a fitting theme more than an earwormy one.
Honestly, Objection 2009 was better than Objection 2011 just because it felt so much more satisfying in a calm, procedural manner, like "Okay, so we figured this out. Make a mental note of this for later". Objection 2011 is a TV-show opening for Edgeworth. It might be very catchy, but I honestly think it doesn't fit a single moment in which it is played and is just an overstimulation.
Also I will get ostracized for saying this, but Lying Coldly was a perfect take on how a pursuit theme for Edgeworth would sound, that Wanting to Find the Truth completely ruined in favor of sounding more like a generic pursuit theme. It may be a good song, but it has none of the charm that Lying Coldly had.
AAI2s translation team, to be honest, did a pretty bad job. (Preface: yes I know criticism like this is mean and uncalled for but since AAI2 isn't even their game, I think it is fair to criticize their take on it after they imposed themselves onto Capcom's game.)
Let's start with the voicelines. Sebastian Debeste's voice actor was the only one who did a good job. Everyone else's voices were way too "high-quality sound" to fit AAs theme. Like, especially ProZDs take on Gregory Edgeworth, who sounds like a 20 year old with a smoking problem and a mouth that's 2cm in diameter.
It especially contrasts von Karma's voice in Inherited and is clearly out of place. Sorry, but ProZD was an absolute garbage casting choice for Gregory. I don't care what you say, Courtney is not British. Knightley and Shields' voices are just too realistic and not AA sounding. Keyes and Blaise are the only other objections that almost fit the bill, almost.
Again, though, massive props to Sebastian's voice actor. He absolutely nailed his voiceclip.
On a related note, I think Alba and Calisto's objections are actually not bad because remember, they are (Alba definitely, Calisto I assume so since she works for him) foreigners who originate from Cohdopia. It makes sense for them to have an accent when speaking English, and with only one word to go off of, their accent sounds exactly like one would expect. It's surprising how most people can't make that basic connection and instead go straight to mindless hating. Ace Attorney's fanbase is supposed to be smarter than that.
Okay now back to the translation team, the overall dialogue for AAI2 feels much more dry. It's not as easy as you'd expect to capture the tones of each character during the translation, and the translation team kind of failed at that. The dialogue for the returning characters, especially Gumshoe and Kay, feel much more uniform and really lack the charm that AAIs official translation had. Try playing AAI and AAI2 in alternating cases side-by-side and the difference becomes clear as day.
Not just the dialogue in general, but also the quips and banter during the investigation sequences between main characters. Especially that one time in Inherited in which young Shields quotes Godot's "blacker than a moonless night" soliloque, for Gregory to think to himself "note: coffee has a bad effect on lawyers". If you really think about it, this took place before T&T and there is no way Godot would just quote Shields, so it's a really weird continuity plothole that both people say the same thing, like a 4th wall break. It's supposed to be a joke, but come on. Capcom wouldn't actually do something so unprofessional like that, and the translation team really had to make that weird joke a permanent part of Capcom's game. It's an official game so it's supposed to be more professional than using 4th wall breaks like that. This may seem nitpicky, but again - official Capcom game.
Of course, people can like whatever they like. You may prefer a culprit that is over-the-top crazy more than a down-to-Earth one. You can like an unpredictable, convoluted overarching story more than a well-written one. But objectively, from a critical, unbiased point of view, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is a much better-written, higher quality work than Gyakuten Kenji 2. No amount of rose-colored glasses can change that, sorry.

2023.06.06 00:35 Automatic-Focus-6671 I could use a little help
So, the wife and I were at an event this weekend, daytime pool, suntanning, a bit of day drinking (very little with this group, which was fine) and had a blast. Hung out with a bunch of nekkid folks, chatted, for us it was purely social, but very sexy. After a little break, it became a somewhat normal party, but it was like everyone turned into wallflowers at night. I am not usually aggressive at meeting new people, but i am not shy. I tried turning on the charm, not in a creepy way, but just a friendly party vibe…nothing. Like a room full of mannequins. And I am not the only one…the folks we already knew who were there got the same reactions (or lack thereof). The hosts did NOTHING to assist in encouraging interaction, it was just music playing (no DJ, so it was some music service, tunes weren’t bad, but inconsistent for dancing), the pools and hot tub were open (I was able to encourage some people to get in the pool when my fat ass got in with one of my female friends I don’t fuck) but the couples that came in for a swim still seemed to be aggressively distant. Not looking for encouragement, but rather ideas of some type of activity or game or something that you may have experienced in the past to help crack the ice. General attempts at conversation were epic fails, and I am already 3/4 bridge troll, so my devastating panty dropping physique has never wowed anyone, and I am NOT above stealing a gimmick. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them, and we have all been to that event that just doesn’t flow right. I am not asking for a spell to summon orgy demons (I’m not saying “no” to that) but just ideas to make the party fun, get the scared newbies or small cliques to crack open and let the interactions happen.
