2023.03.25 12:00 spiritualcicada66 I just can't be around my parents anymore.

I mentioned to NMum that she often goes on her phone while we're in the middle of a conversation, and this doesn't feel good and makes me feel like what I have to say isn't worth listening to. I know this was a really stupid thing to do and absolutely a mistake. But I feel like you should be able to raise this with someone? But yes, bad move.
Of course she blew up: how can you be so cruel, do you think I'm a horrible mother, shouting screaming etc., interrupting me. I couldn't get a word in. She was inventing things I hadn't said. She also said "get some friends, I can't be your entire social life, I'm not going to give you more of my time, you're an adult". All I was saying was I feel hurt when she gets her phone out. I'm barely even home most days !!! I'm not even asking for anything here!
My father overheard and told me what I'm feeling is "objectively not true", "I need to seek therapy", "there must be another issue going on in your life, you're making this up, why don't you tell us the real problem". He does this clicking thing when I speak, like 'get a move on', talks over me, shuts me up. He says these horrible things then expects me to just take it. If I try to reply he shuts me down.
Brother is GC, he's 22 and gets tons of support/special treatment, he chose to move interstate and doesn't have to get a job because of all the money he gets from my parents and the government. He's extremely abusive and horrible - like actual jekyll/hyde monster. I mean huge trauma, violence, incidents with police, emotional abuse for the last decade. Manipulated and abused his two prior girlfriends so much, one of them developed a psychiatric disorder and the other started drinking. I'm not allowed to mention any of this, I get shut down and they call it "sibling rivalry".
I wish I could move out but just cannot do that right now. (You know I would if it were that simple.) I think I'm going to minimise contact as much as possible. They'll definitely use that against me, but it's the only way to protect myself. Reading this sub is helping a lot - it's just nice to hear from people who understand .

2023.03.25 12:00 Late_Basis_697 I miss acid so much

Last year I had a great summer. It was spent in parallel dimensions, it was spent on actually living. I tripped every two weeks. I miss real becoming surreal and surreal becoming real. I miss sight, smell, touch, hearing being turned to the maximum. I miss Buddhas all over my walls and floor. I even miss those somber faces on the spruces that stared angrily in my direction. Those were wonderful experiences, the most joy and the most terror i've ever felt in my life. It cleared my head of the dreaded OCD and made me appreciate things i've never thought about beforehand.
I miss LSD. Shame life seems to eager to keep us apart.

2023.03.25 12:00 MissMac420 chapter 2 - how to catch a killer Katherine Ramsland - The Footpad Killer

I felt the first chapter I posted kind of lacked in details, so I will post more details.
Name; colin pitchfork AKA The Footpad Killer
Date of birth: march 2 1960
Location: England
Known victims: 2 teenage girls named Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth
Age of victims: both 15
Characteristics: rape and strangulation
Date of killings: 1983 and 1986
Colins life
Colin Pitchfork, who was born in Coventry, England on March 23, 1960, had an ordinary upbringing in a working-class family. He held various jobs as a baker and labourer after finishing school. In a confession, Pitchfork disclosed that he had been struggling with feelings of inadequacy since childhood and started exposing himself to girls at the age of 11 to feel powerful. Following his arrest for indecent exposure, he was admitted to a hospital for therapy. Pitchfork eventually got married, had two sons, and worked as a cake maker in a nearby bakery.
The crimes
On November 21, 1983, Lynda Mann, a 15-year-old girl, left home to visit a friend, but she did not return. Her body was discovered the next morning on a wooded shortcut footpath by an employee of the psychiatric hospital situated next to the path. An autopsy revealed that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled. An antigen blood test was conducted ( the best method they had at the time) on a semen sample recovered from her body, which indicated that the perpetrator had blood type A, a group that accounted for one out of every ten males in the country. Although the nearby hospital inmates initially fell under suspicion, all of their blood tests came back negative. Despite pursuing various leads resulting from the recovered evidence, investigators hit a dead end, and the case went unsolved.
On July 31, 1986, another 15-year-old girl named Dawn Ashworth went missing while walking home, and her lifeless body was found two days later in a nearby wooded area. She had been raped, beaten, and strangled. This tragedy brought the previous unsolved case of Lynda Mann back into the spotlight as forensic analysis revealed that the semen sample found on Dawn's body matched the one recovered from Lynda's. Investigators realized they were dealing with a serial killer who was still at large, and the pressure to apprehend the culprit intensified. The search for the perpetrator continued, and eventually, a suspect emerged.
At first, the police suspected that the 17-year-old Richard Burkland, who had severe learning difficulties and was mentally slow for his age, was the rapist and murderer. Richard became interested in the police investigation surrounding Dawn Ashworth's disappearance and approached an officer, claiming to have seen the girl walking and already dead before her body was found. This led to Richard's arrest. When questioned, Richard confessed to the crimes, but he claimed that he must have been in a trance and could not remember committing them. As a result, he was charged with the murders. Although Richard's mother provided an alibi, it was disregarded after several young girls came forward, accusing Richard of molesting them. In an effort to prove his son's innocence, Richard's father learned about a new DNA discovery that could prove paternity and asked his son's solicitor to obtain a semen sample from Richard. The solicitor then reached out to the detectives, who contacted Dr. Alex Jeffreys, the scientist who had made the breakthrough, for help.
In 1984, Dr. Alex Jeffreys used DNA testing to resolve an immigration dispute involving a boy from Ghana who claimed to have a British mother and wanted to live with her. Working in his laboratory at the University of Leicester, Jeffreys and his team focused on the small percentage of human DNA that exhibits individual variation, providing a marker for definitive identification that far exceeded what blood tests had been able to achieve before. In a later publication, Jeffreys claimed that an individual's DNA pattern was unique and could not be found in any past, present or future individuals. He suggested that this breakthrough could have implications for many areas, including the identification of criminals from a small sample of blood left at a crime scene.
Jeffreys was approached for help, and he analysed the samples collected from the crime scene, which showed that they belonged to the same person, but not to Richard. It was later revealed that Richard had falsely confessed under duress, and he became the first person in history to be exonerated by DNA testing.
With Richard Burkland cleared of the murders, investigators were left with no solid leads on who the real culprit could be. However, they were determined to use the new tool of DNA testing to solve the case. A massive undertaking was initiated as they decided to test every local man and those in adjacent villages, totalling over 5000 individuals. Despite the expense and effort, the results were negative, and none of the tested men were found to be responsible for the crimes. Frustratingly, the case went cold once again, and it seemed like the killer would never be brought to justice.
THE capture
In 1987, an incident came to light that caught the attention of the police. A woman overheard Ian Kelly bragging in a bar about being paid to hand in his own blood sample as a substitute for a man named Colin Pitchfork. Kelly revealed that Pitchfork had already given his blood to cover for another man. The police realized that they had questioned Kelly during the investigation into the murder of Lynda Mann in 1983. At that time, Kelly had provided an alibi, claiming that he was at home looking after his baby while his wife attended a class. The alibi checked out, and Kelly was eliminated as a suspect. However, with this new information, Kelly was back on the suspect list.
When the police arrested Pitchfork, he confessed to the crimes. He recounted how he had been driving with his baby when he spotted Lynda Mann. Initially, he decided to flash her, but the excitement of the act aroused him so much that he decided to rape her. When she ran into the woods, Pitchfork realized that he would have to kill her to keep her from turning him in. So he raped, strangled, and killed her before returning to his baby and picking up his wife. Pitchfork also admitted to another rape but the victim never came forward. The police sent Pitchfork's samples for testing and, as expected, they matched
The takeaway
Colin Pitchfork's conviction and the subsequent media attention brought DNA testing to the forefront of forensic science. The case not only highlighted the importance of DNA in solving crimes but also demonstrated its potential to exonerate the wrongly convicted. As DNA technology continued to develop, the United States slowly began to embrace it in the courtroom. However, its admissibility in trials remained a contentious issue, with legal challenges focusing on the handling and interpretation of samples. To address these concerns, the FBI issued guidelines to standardise the quality of DNA testing. In addition, the Pitchfork case inspired the creation of the Innocence Project, a non-profit organisation that seeks to use DNA evidence to exonerate individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. Overall, the Pitchfork case was a turning point in the use of DNA in forensic investigations, and it paved the way for the modern use of DNA evidence in the criminal justice system

2023.03.25 11:59 Raddadist Reddit with Google translator...

https://youtu.be/zMPNE-IalU4
Hello dear people. As a German, my fluent English is relatively poor. In any case, it's bad enough that discussions are hardly fun anymore because they are exhausting. We Germans have had an advantage and disadvantage when watching films and series since the 1950s: everything on television is dubbed into German. German films and series are mostly real rubbish and lousy quality. However, the German synchronizations are considered to be the best in the world. This actually goes back to reasons in the post-war period. American actors often have their permanent voice actors, who sometimes lend them the same voice for decades. Sometimes American actors find their German voice actors even better (e.g. Woody Allen. And Robin Williams even sent his German voice actor a small replica of his Oscar for "Good Will Hunting". Along with the text: Thank you for making me famous in Germany Of course, that's great and convenient for the viewers, but it doesn't exactly help when learning German that has to be spoken quickly. Fortunately, there are now good translators on smartphones and on the Internet... So I can do everything in German as normal and can communicate in my own language just like you. In the past, website translators only spat out gibberish. Today they usually get along well. I once recorded what it looks like when I communicate with you. It is best to switch the resolution a little higher on YouTube so that you can read texts. Turn on the subtitles and look in the subtitle settings to see how the text can be displayed in English for you. The video is short and I practically whisper a little to myself. In my screen video, I write so slowly and incorrectly because I forgot my glasses at work AND you can't make a mistake because the translator doesn't understand anything else.
All this is not a technical miracle - or maybe it is?! I just wanted to show how wonderfully the newer technologies finally overcome language barriers. In the past, I would have had to search the dictionary for each word individually. As I said: normally I type much faster and everything in German. Only today my glasses are missing and I tend to make mistakes.
Despite speaking different languages, we can talk to each other almost fluently. That's really great

2023.03.25 11:56 anonymous8122 It's my first day and I have to tell my new boss there was a death in the family

I have not had to do this before. I just woke up to find a member of my extended family has passed away very unexpectedly. I am quite close with people who were close with them, so I'm sure I will be expected to attend the calling hours and probably the funeral as well.
Later today I am going in for my first real day at my new job, and the person who makes the schedule is there today so I will have to say something. Is just something along the lines of, "I've had a death in the family and will have to attend the calling hours and funeral, but I don't have those dates yet so I will keep you updated" ok? I'm mildly concerned because it is my first day, and it's a temporary job, only about 2 months long and generally time off is not allowed because of that. BUT the management is very caring from what I've seen, and I'm sure they will ultimately be fine if I need to miss a shift or two. I just want to make sure I give as much heads up as possible, which just happens to be on my first day so I want to make sure I go about things right.

2023.03.25 11:53 SapiosexualGuy 27 [M4F] - India/anywhere - Let's develop an understanding

Lets chat about anything on your mind. I like people who ask me upfront whatever they want to know about me. And also don't hesitate to share, open up and be vulnerable. Relationships are built on trust, they start from friendships. I'm eventually looking for a long term connection where we can be comfortable and with each other and trust fully.
However trusting doesn't mean that we have blind faith in a person, especially on internet where there's lot of scammers and liars. Hence we should not be upset or angry when someone asks us for any proof.
We should have a balance. Like not asking the person to verify on the first day itself but rather trusting our instincts. But at the same time, staying safe online.
As for love, it's hard to develop that over online communication, especially text chat. Most of us are just in love with the idea of love. We tend to feel attracted with the idea of the person we formed in our mind which may be different from his real self.
Anyways, my way of searching is to tell everything about me completely and transparently. Whoever appreciates my honesty and likes me for what I am will stay.
So, just some basics. I'm 6 feet. I live in north India. I like thriller movies, chess, reading, soccer. I love animals though don't have pets. I haven't been able to find anyone for a relationship yet.

2023.03.25 11:52 Quoll675 Wendigo, Werewolf and the Mythological understanding of Cannibalism

Ok, so this isn't a theory, really, but more of a discussion of themes and allusion. A kinda? essay.
So I know broadly that both the Wendigo and the Werewolf have been occasionally discussed in the form of supernatural theories here. So, the theories centre around the idea that either creature is an actual character or presence within the series. Most commonly, it is with Taissa as a literal werewolf, or the Wendigo as the supernatural power that is so heavily alluded to.
I'm personally not a believer in those theories, and I think most people can agree they're very much out there. But we know that Yellowjackets' is a story about the supernatural, whether or not it actually exists in the story. Thus, I am almost certain both concepts are being very deliberately alluded to, and I just want to discuss it because I think that allusion is really brilliant, given both creatures' have a real connection to cannibalism and the breakdown of human society.
The Werewolf (Taissa)
Ok, so this one comes first because
  1. it was the first connection I had
  2. it seemed blindingly obvious after I made it
Taissa's wolf motif and wolf hallucinations are pretty clear throughout the plot (and to herself). But I think, more broadly, that they are alluding to the werewolf. Specifically, they are alluding to Taissa herself being the werewolf. The werewolf, is, prototypically:
The werewolf is also, unmistakably, a creature associated with cannibalism.
I know I said before that this was not stating that Taissa is a literal werewolf, but in some ways, she is, just not a supernatural one.
Looking at her from the perspective of the supernatural as a way of understanding the horror in the world, a perspective Yellowjackets definitely discusses, Taissa is the archetypal werewolf. Even from a purely supernatural perspective, the only thing she's missing is fur.
But all the same, I'm leaning more towards the discussion of the idea that for Yellowjackets: werewolves, and the supernatural itself, are simply something we invent to explain the darkness that's already there. The second season description even states that the characters are trying to determine "whether the darkness is coming from them or for them." The existence of the werewolf, in folklore, is then just an outgrowth of people who naturally attack another in awful, animal ways, and both the wilderness spirit and Taissa's alternate self could just as easily be the same.

Wendigo (Lottie, and the survivors as a whole)
Ok, so this piece of mythology has been discussed quite a bit more. The wendigo is a creature of Native American mythology best identified by its large antlers and its connection to cannibalism. Both antlers and cannibalism, it goes without saying are kinda Yellowjackets' whole thing.
But more than that, the mythology around the Wendigo touches on pretty much all the major ideas of the show: primal nature, primal violence and the loss of society. Also - Antlers & Cannibalism.
The Wendigo is a native american spirit/monster:
All of this is pretty clearly reflected in Yellowjackets, and with the supernatural focus of the show... there's almost certainly an (at least subconscious) link.
But it's also really interesting when we're talking about the connection between the supernatural, psychology and humanity's innate violence. The Wendigo is often held to be simply a supernatural telling of human cannibals in areas with harsh winters. In this sense, a wendigo is a person transformed is both a personification of the hunger that makes someone a cannibal, and also the person (or people, themselves) wherein breaking such a brutal taboo irreversibly turns you into a monster.
In this sense, there are a lot of parallels to the Yellowjackets survivors, and specifically Lottie, the survivor who seems to understand the most about what's really going on with this whole mess. Regardless of whether there is a supernatural element, Lottie in particular is already kinda a wendigo: completely tied to that experience of winter wilderness, the taboos they broke there, and now passing that bestial, violent transformation on.
Any ideas? [And thank you for sitting through my Ted Talk]

2023.03.25 11:50 tigerloafs old exes appearing out of nowhere

“They always come back” Kind of.
Shortly after my last breakup, an ex of mine from a year ago appeared out of nowhere. I figured I already had this person blocked everywhere but apparently not. They begged to see me and I declined, its been over a year and you’re begging? Come on.
Couple weeks go by and I get a text from an ex who was my first real love. When we broke up I lost myself entirely with grief. The relationship was chaotic and passionate and I would have done absolutely anything just to see them or even speak one last time. They texted a simple “hey how are you?” Its been 10 months since I was blocked on every platform by this person, this was the last thing I expected from them. We exchanged a few messages, they then decide it was a mistake to talk again as they moved states and a ldr is not on the table. I was then blocked again.
My heart hurts. There was so much I wanted to say. Im still incredibly hung up on my recent ex (1 month NC) and now im grieving two people. I wish I could turn my feelings off like an avoidant

2023.03.25 11:46 dragonshokan Season 3 - Can they wrap it all up?

I thought it was good to gauge how others feel about the first 2 episodes in terms of establishing characters, roles, story lines and relationships that are either new or a continuation of established ones and what it means for this final season. So also what we can expect, taking into account what's been key in the past 2 seasons. The main reasons I want to gauge this are:
  1. I remember first 2-3 episodes of season 2 were not met with overwhelming enthusiasm and people talked about a different feel, pace and being different from the 1st season. So basically wondering if my feelings, doubts, worries and overall feeling of these first 2 episodes are justified are too early to tell.
  2. Given it's the final season and the story highly likely will have a closed ending and will wrap up all story lines, I am wondering if they can wrap it all up in the next 9-10 episodes with the first 2 and likely part of the 3rd episode still establishing main or bigger sub-stories with a lot of characters and different relationships, which are key to be resolved before the season ends.
With this being said, let's get into the main question: can they wrap it all up and are they actually not trying to do too much for a final season? I think prior to this season there were quite a few key stories and relationships that we'll get closure on and we all expected to be explored. To me they are as follows:
  1. Ted & relation w/ his ex, his son & home - moving away, distance from his son, being in England, reconciling and accepting Michelle has moved on. Big question: can he accept Michelle moving on and being away from his son for much longer?
  2. Ted's personal & professional journey - therapy, dealing with father's death, accepting negative emotions, quitting and reconciling how his character has affected his relationships. Big questions about staying on as a coach, can he, does he want to and potentially his love life.
  3. Roy & Keeley - romantic relationship, work relationship, Tartt with a key role and potentially Phoebe's teacher. The story is of course one of love and the big question: will they or won't they?
  4. Keeley's personal & professional journey - overcoming confidence issues, step out of the shadow of other (men), relationship with Roy, Jamie, Rebecca and the team.
  5. Roy's personal and professional journey - can he accept and thrive in his role as a retired player and a coach?
  6. Rebecca & Rupert - how will their relationship evolve and will she move on from her hurt, can she love again?
  7. Rebecca's personal journey and love life - dealing with her father's death, mother, the fling with Obisanya, running the team and building self confidence again.
  8. Tartt's journey - relationship with his father, persona and dynamics with Keeley, Roy, Ted & the team.
  9. Obisanya's journey - relationship with his roots, new restaurant and role on the team. Will he stay?
  10. Beard's journey - dynamics between him and Ted as a coach given different outlook on the game, but also Jane's relationship - less of a will they or won't they, but it does tie into his character and how he tends to have short, rather meaningless relationships due to personal insecurities.
  11. Ted & Nate - father & son theme, will they resolve their issues?
  12. Nate's personal journey - family ties, confidence, dealing with his past etc.
  13. Ted & Rebecca's relationship - it's a friendship, but they're also professionals and their dynamic is a key support system and key to both resolving their issues. Potential love relationship?
  14. Trent Crimm - based on his relationship with the team, Ted & season finale reveal.
  15. Dr. Sharon - based on her relationship with the team, Ted & reveal of personal issues.
To me these 15 are kind of the main and bigger sub-plots, plot lines, stories and relationships that they have focused on and likely would focus on since most are too important to be left as they were or just be pushed to the background. There are of course a few less prominent characters on the football team, though staple, who they have not focused on outside of the group setting and thus likely won't give an important personal focus. As well as the likes of Phoebe, Rebecca's mom and Sassy. So let's dive into how this relates to the first 2 episodes and what I take away from them:
Both episode 1 and 2 have had their moments, but at the same time don't all hit home for me. There's a lot going on w/ some parts getting too much focus or seem to still be in the background, making me wary of them coming to a satisfying conclusion. One that is getting too much focus for me is Keeley with her firm. I would rather have seen her as a freelancer, but in any case some flashbacks of the time she went away with Roy and slowly revealing what went wrong, rather than just in an office with a bit of a forced story with her CFO. I get where they are going with it, but the office scenes are just not funny at all, so that doesn't help with what they're trying to tell.
I feel like particularly in the second episode they were doing too much, it could've done without certain scenes and stories. Glad no Nate this episode at least or it would've just been overload. I'm a bit torn on the new player coming in. It will certainly add to Tartt's journey, Ted's and change the team dynamics a ton. In the story it could go horribly wrong, even worse than bringing back Tartt or just Tartt in season 1, or be very funny and work well to give Tartt, Ted & the team a way to deal with certain things. But introducing a character this late, I wonder how much focus it can get that does it justice, yet also doesn't take away focus from others.
In general I rather would see more screen time for Dr. Sharon & Crimm, like in this episode for the latter, than a new character. Or having this whole story of Keeley play out 90% at her workplace. If you were to ask me what I'd want and expect to see in season 3 with Keeley & Roy since he's part of it, I'd say: Roy dating the teacher, fun Roy and Phoebe scenes - keeping his mind off of Keeley since their breakup was bound to happen. Keeley I'd expect to have her work during the "holiday" with Roy, different assignments that challenge her to face her fears, insecurities.
With the new information, I could see dating random fellas, eventually bringing her back to Roy that way as well as spending time with Phoebe at some point, which surely would be more fun and get some laughs with dating. I didn't find a single thing interesting or funny in Keeley's solo scenes at the shoot or at the office, aside from the awkward guy at the office, but that was more of a slight mouth movement than anything else. Could go somewhere sure, but cannot say I'm enjoying it at the moment. It feels a bit off. So in theory her having her own company is not the biggest issue, it's how much time they focus on it and how the comedy just doesn't land.
There's a different vibe this season for sure and it's taking time to adjust, so after it's all said and done I might be able to enjoy what they were aiming for with Keeley, the different tone, many different stories crammed in one episode, the adding of another big personality to the football team etc. But I'm a bit skeptical and not blown away necessarily, though both episodes I've had laughs, lessons learned, great quotes and an inkling of where they're going and it's likely only going to get better.
I remember the first 2 or 3 of season 2 feeling different and not the best either, but they are establishing a new way forward, so that's understandable. I just think 2 out of 12 episodes is already quite long to lay out all the stories and characters, which is likely even going to go into episode 3. That's why I wish we'd get 14-16 episodes. There seems to be a lot of new to establish for a final season, especially since so much needs to come to a conclusion, that I fear they will forget to address certain things or just leave things a bit hanging. Kind of like in real life.
All in all, had hoped to have had more Dr. Sharon - who along with Crimm was said to have major roles in this final season according to producer Bill Lawrence - and more Keeley & Roy flashbacks, more Ted, more Beard etc. Hell, we haven't had one freaking scene with Ted & Beard in the pub!!! I miss that the most. Or just Diamond Dogs. There's certain things they've established over 2 seasons and so far they've been missing and I get this feeling, this season might just be completely different. But let's see, it's been entertaining, there's a lot of good scenes, the familiar humor and drama so I'd give first 2 episodes a solid 7-8 out of 10. They haven't been amazing though.
But to the original point, do people feel my 15 points are accurate? Did I include things that were never meant to come to a conclusion? Do people feel these first 2 episodes are doing too much? My fear of certain things not being addressed warranted? Keeley's scenes landing for you?

2023.03.25 11:45 ThanksSlight6576 It's my birthday and I can't stop thinking about dying

I haven't been well for a while and today is particularly depressing. My diabetes keeps getting worse even though I've been strictly following my diabetes management plan. Nothing I do seem to matter anyway. I don't have any close friends and the only person I thought might end up being a real friend of mine seems to have given up on me. Now we don't talk outside of work. It's the weekend and I still have a shit ton of work to do and I just want to turn off that part of my brain that's making me think about the depressive state of my life to the point that I can't even breathe let alone focus on work. It's a vicious cycle. I can't connect with people because of how I'm feeling. And loneliness is probably the root cause of what I'm feeling. On top of that, I've never lived in a place that was safe for people like me. So my whole life I've been trying to excel at what I do for the chance to escape to a more tolerable place. But how can I be exceptional in my field if both my mental health state and diabetes keep deteriorating over time? It feels like I'm fighting a losing battle because the odds have been stacked up against me from the very beginning and now it's catching up on me. I don't want to be here. I simply don't see the point of any of this anymore.

2023.03.25 11:45 GunterPoweredStick Just finished Priest, wanted to discuss it

I personally feel like I was missing something. A lot of people gave it high reviews, but I wasn't impressed, and I was hoping to pick people's brains, see what they liked about it.
What I did think was solid was the worldbulding. While not a dramatically original world, I think the care and appreciation for these classic fantasy tropes showed, making the world feel cohesive and real. I think he did a good job with the magic/etc, not getting too bogged down in details, and it was used well.
One major sticking point for me was the way the "grittier" elements were used. Early on he shows homophobia and child brothels exist in his world, but they seemingly only serve the purpose of making Heden look moral in comparison, which felt pretty icky to me. Heden spends most of the book ogling various female characters, and SPOILERS as soon as the Squire we as mentioned to have a vow of celibacy I knew exactly where that was going, and it did. Repeatedly I felt Heden was being morally praised for doing the minimum.
This then clashed with how I felt about Heden generally, since while he's positioned as a good man, weary with the world, this low bar of "good man" then just made him feel like a cynical jerk to me, constantly dwelling on his "great burden". It felt a bit of a drag to be reminded how scarred he is all the time.
I liked a lot of the components of the mystery - the green order was intriguing, as were the arrogate concept, and how it all fit together.
MORE SPOILERS this then disappointed me further when the mystery is resolved by almost a Deus ex Machina, the murder being literally shown to him, and furthermore the cause of everything being the unexplained actions of the Bishop.
Fundamtally, the book is about the protagonist being set up to fail, and then failing.
Maybe I'm missing something? I'd be interested e hear peoples thoughts on what they liked about it.

2023.03.25 11:45 Golderfild Few words about the russian dub

Inspired by this old post: https://www.reddit.com/Schmigadoon/comments/p1wyaq/comment/jdk76j3/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 . Sorry, I just couldn't hold it to myself!
The Russian dub of Schimagadoon! Is incredibly good, to the point that I would even call it one of the best dubs out there. What amazes me the most about it is the way, how the lyrics for songs and some jokes were adapted. Surprisingly, there’re almost no direct differentiations from the original, even if we’re talking about the songs’ lyrics. You shall keep in mind, reading this, that the general Russian word is three times longer, than it’s analog in English, and that such things as lip-sync, timings and the rest exist. In case with musical, we also have the need to come up with a good rhyme, to save the song’s original rhythm, structure and many other complications like that.
And even if there are some differentiations, they’re always in line with the original’s intent, like ‘Schmi-i-i-GA-doon, where the sun shines bright from july to june...’ turns into ‘Schmi-i-i-GA-doon, where it only rains once a year...’. In the same song, there’s an example of how scrupulously the specific of original sounding was carried into the Russian version, when even such little details like Mildred Layton, accentuating the end of her phrase like ‘... the la-a-a-ws of Go-o-D’ remains as ‘… svyato-o-o-y za-a-koN’ (literally ‘the sacred law’) remains, instead of being safely ignored.
Another example is the dialogue from “You Can’t Tame Me” song.
Danny Bailey: ‘We’d have a kid or two, or three/Two girls for you and two boys for me’
Melissa: ‘Shouldn’t both kids be for both of us?’.
Becomes.
Danny Bailey: ‘She’d give birth to two sons/And than maybe even daughters’.
Melissa: ‘So what, we don’t have to have girls?’.
And here’s how the ‘gay’ joke from the second episode was dealt with.
Melissa: ‘Mister Mayor... do you love man?’
Mayor: ‘I love everybody!’.
And in the ‘Tribulation’ song there is this one change, that I like really much, when Mildred Layton instead on answering ‘Okey, I’ll do it’ says something like ‘Well, since everybody asks’ and she does it so bluntly, that it’s literally impossible not to laugh!
Also there is this moment, that the Mayor is voiced by Mikhail Chernyak (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6GNR4tnr9Q), the actor with an incredible range and an amazing kind, soft voice, who always sounds cheerfully, but with a bit of melancholy laying beneath, which fits perfectly. And the voice for Danny was provided by Andrey Levin, who I remember fondly as a Russian voice of Wander from Wander Over Yonder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3txgoWWkNWQ&list=PLhMO9vCp7kqByjbmbIQKHb8iwecUTKtN5&index=7). And each voice fits the role so perfectly that it is like the actors of original start speaking in Russian.
I truly believe that the people, who worked on this dub were the real masters of their craft and even a year and a half after watching Schmigadoon! I cannot stop fanboying over how well it’s Russian version is made.

2023.03.25 11:44 glitchbxby Being a ghost would be my ideal form of existence.

I really enjoy watching people live their lives, listening indirectly to their conversations while in public, being an observer of events etc. My problem is having to interfere on the world, I hate having to talk and to do things that will have consequences in it. I wish I could just watch life like a tv show or as if I was a ghost, in a way that no one could see me, nothing would be expected of me and I wouldn't need to worry because I would be certain of it. I could just contemplate the world in peace.
Some of you guys may have watched Euphoria and I definitely feel a connection with the description made about Lexi, how she felt like she was an just observer and that her life was not really her life, just some sort of play or movie.
These days I been having the classic "I want to leave all behind and live in the woods with just a dog" idea and daydreams, and I guess that a big part of it is because I feel like there I could be like this, or at least similar enough. Be an observer of nature, never having to deal with socialization again, only brief interactions for, let's say, buy necessary stuff from other people (which I don't mind). I know this isn't realistic for my context and also that it probably wouldn't be this magical thing, but it's a fantasy that brings me satisfaction.
I guess I'm just burned out of people. A lot of bad things happened in my relational and social life since childhood till last year and I'm really bitter about it right now. Of course I want to find real connection, where I could be myself openly and comfortably, but because it always goes wrong and brings disappointments I'm really hopeless at this point and honestly kinda angry. I don't have patience for people anymore, I'm tired, I'm being judgy as hell and I'm activelly avoiding new people.

Ayo, anyone notice some budlings and set pieces from Atlanta that were reused for Swarm? I believe the mall was definitely one, while the other was the strip club, albeit a different name. Any of you pick up on that? And if so, were there any others you recognized?

2023.03.25 11:41 eazyezme Phantom of the Opera- my love for the Gerard Butler version

Okay okay, so I know there’s been a lot of backlash for the movie with Emmy Rossum as Christine and Gerard Butler as the Phantom. I LOVE that movie version. I’ve seen the movie with Michael Crawford, and the broadway with Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Burgess. Let me say this: I hated the Christine in the Michael Crawford movie because I thought she was a terrible singer and annoying to look at since her acting was terrible. I also didn’t prefer Michael Crawfords performance as the phantom because I felt his voice was too high and not powerful. It was good, sure, but not as I would expect the phantoms voice to be. It was too melodic with no power whatsoever, basically sounding like how Raul should sound. I know Emmy Rossum doesn’t technically have an “opera voice”…. But I think that’s why I preferred it. Her voice was BEAUTIFUL. It was melodic, it was high when it needed to be, and she hit those low notes like a pro. I thought her voice was amazing and I actually enjoyed listening to it. NOW TO THE REAL SHIT. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ramin Karimloo’s voice and I think he did an amazing job. I think he portrayed the obsessive, love-struck, vulnerable side of the phantom really well and it was interesting to watch that performance and gain that perspective into the phantom. His voice is amazing and the sexual tension/chemistry between him and Sierra Burgess is literally amazing and had me speechless. They portray the fact that he literally enchants her and basically draws her singing out of her through an unseen force (or years of grooming?) amazingly and it makes me feel like I can feel it too. However, my all-time favorite phantom is Gerard Butler. I know he’s not an opera singer, and that he was basically only casted because he was a heart-throb at the time BUT he’s exactly how I would imagine the phantom to be. He has such a low and powerful BOOMING voice, along with the fact he’s very seductive which I feel like the phantom needs to be in order to even enchant Christine though half of his face is supposed to be disgusting. Gerard Butlers performance is exactly what I would imagine the Phantom to be. I’m drawn to his power, his booming voice, his ability to seduce, and sympathize with him when he’s showing his vulnerabilities which is exactly what the phantom is supposed to do. I know a lot of people hate on that version, but I don’t understand that AT ALL. Not to mention, Patrick Wilson as Raul: AMAZING. He portrays such a sweet and comforting Raul. His voice is beautiful and calming, and he makes people want to trust him and he calmed by him which is exactly what Raul is supposed to be. I don’t like the Raul in the broadway version, he seems to aggressive and gaslight-y, he gives off too many red flags rather than seeming comforting. ANYWAYS I know this was a long rant, but I want to see who agrees with me or who doesn’t (and why) and I’m obsessed with POTO and extremely sad that my dream to see it on broadway will never come true since it’s on the other side of the country and closing down :(
