2023.06.10 00:29 tolkienfan2759 Is it racist, to try to eliminate racism by raising the marriage rate between so called white guys and so called black women?

I'm not sure but I think the reason some people think it's racist is, they hear the plan (outlined below) and they say to themselves "these people want to eliminate white people." But it's not white people the plan seeks to eliminate. In fact, it eliminates no people at all, by any means whatever. Its goal, instead, is to eliminate the fantasy we call whiteness. To me that's a very different thing. Although I can see how people might disagree.
Now, I previously asked (in the sister sub) if this plan was eugenics, and most of the responses were way more concerned with how specifically we would raise that marriage rate than they were about whether it was eugenics or not. People were worried that the plan would involve coercing or manipulating people into marriage.
And so I'll start with a brief description of how to raise the marriage rate between so called white guys and so called black women (I say so called because race is largely a fantasy). Without forcing anyone to do anything.
Then I'll give a new conception of racism, one that I think clarifies everything very usefully, hopefully bringing the temperature down about racism and allowing us to discuss it more calmly and clearly.
Then I'll restate the question, just in case those who read that far forget what I've asked.
And finally (assuming some of you may be interested) I'll give a bunch of objections I've heard previously, to a plan like this, and my responses to those objections. It's possible, among other things, that this plan will destroy the Democratic Party as we know it. Perhaps you see that as a good thing. Please feel free to select an objection to the plan, that you like, and add arguments in its favor or better rebuttals than I can provide.
I will not be able to respond immediately, but I promise to try to get to all thoughtful responses within 24 hours.
And that's how the post is organized. Here we go.
How to Raise That Marriage Rate
I've known for a long time that the marriage rate, between so called white guys and so called black women, was extraordinarily low. So called black girls learn this at the age of 7 or 8. It didn't occur to me until recently that that's really the key to eliminating racism.
You see, we seem to have made a lot of progress, against racism, over the decades. We're much less likely to have a race riot than we once were, we don't hang people from trees any more, we've halfway integrated the schools, we've elected a black president. On the surface it doesn't look nearly as bad as it used to.
But then if you look at that marriage rate, you discover that we've made much less progress than it appears. In 1960 that marriage rate was about 6 per 10,000. That is, of every 10,000 married so called white guys, 6 were married to so called black women. By 1998 that rate had risen to 2 per 1000. The colorblind rate would be 120 per 1000. So if you take that discrepancy as a measure of our actual level (as opposed to an apparent level) of racism, you find that we are at about 98% of our capacity for racism. Not individually: as a people. And all that progress we've made is only progress against the appearance of racism. Raising that marriage rate is the key hurdle, in beginning to make real progress.
And all we really have to do, to raise the marriage rate between so called white guys and so called black women, is begin telling the truth. Specifically there is one key fact of which everyone needs to become aware, and it is this: if while you're growing up you one day discover that you are unable or unwilling to fall in love with, and marry, a so called black woman, then your heart is broken. Your heart is not working properly. And you need to fix that.
The study of psychology is pretty clear on this: people work on their hearts, and make progress, all their lives. They can do this. And they will. If we tell them it's important to do so. If they do work on their hearts, and if they do raise that marriage rate, we will gradually become one people. Racism will end. No races: no racism. (Well, it's not QUITE that simple, but that's the gist. The actual change will be the destruction of the marriage barrier, without which racism will not be possible. Anything that looks like racism, without a marriage barrier, is just ethnic prejudice.)
So that's the plan. That's how to raise that marriage rate and, by so doing, eliminate racism.
What Racism Really Is
A lot of people seem to think racism is basically an individual thing. Their tactic, in eliminating racism, is to hunt down and re-educate (or take the livings of, or both) marginally plausible, identifiable so called racists. The data is in, unfortunately, and this is an error. We've been doing it long enough that if it was going to work it would have worked before now.
You see, that marriage rate, if this tactic were working, would be much higher. And so racism isn't an individual thing, it's a group thing. It's not a characteristic of individuals, but of a society. Certain individuals may have verbalized and made conscious their involvement with group racism, turning themselves into what we think of as bigots, and others may not have, but racism itself is expressed primarily in social preferences measured over millions of interactions by millions of people. And so it doesn't matter how many individuals you penalize for it, or re-educate, or both, the group problem will persist and continue to erupt in individual symptoms. So it's important to stop penalizing and re-educating people, because it doesn't work. Instead we need to show them how to fix it (as detailed above).
And the good news is, we're not morally guilty of racism. It isn't something we did. We didn't invent it or install it; we inherited it. And it didn't come with a user manual, to tell us where the switch is, if we feel like turning it off. We don't have to apologize for it, any more than so called black people have to apologize for having darker skin. We, we Americans, we were born this way. We were born with racism as a characteristic of our society.
Now, that doesn't mean that once someone shows us the switch, and shows us how to turn it off, we shouldn't do that. It's a harmful practice, deeply insulting to many whom we like to think we think of (I know, it's complicated) as members of our society, and it would be a glorious thing to finally defeat it. Has any other people actually eliminated racism without eliminating the subject people? I'm going to go out on a limb here: Never. It would be a world historical first. And a real step towards making America great again. I hope you all will see that this plan, as outlined above, will eliminate racism.
I deal with a number of objections below. But the basic question is: is this a racist idea?
As I said above, I won't be able to respond immediately, but I promise to try to get to all thoughtful responses within 24 hours (assuming the automod doesn't prevent publication and I have to appeal to the mods to get them to re-instate the post at some indeterminate time). And I thank you so much for your patience.
Let me just add that the responses to my first question in the sister sub, about whether this plan was eugenics or not, were so interesting and thoughtful, I was just floored. I sent this plan to 60 or 70 sociologists with an interest in race, and got zero thoughtful responses. I mean, not a ONE. I'm starting to think you all are each individually smarter than most, if not all, university professors of sociology who have a focus on race, all put together. Thank you again.
OBJECTIONS
Objection 1: It's Eugenics
There are a couple of different responses to this objection. The first is that if the intent was to affect our genetic portrait it might be, but it's not. The intent is to destroy the hallucination that is known as race.
The second response is: what we're doing NOW is eugenics. When so called white guys fail to fall in love with, and marry, so called black women, that is practical, popular eugenics. Sure, it's subconscious: that doesn't mean it's not purposeful. This is an anti eugenics plan.
The third response is: eugenics is a carefully applied genetic program designed to weed out undesirable genetic characteristics or improve or add desirable ones. Animal husbandry for humans. This is a plan to expand the pool of candidates from which so called white guys select marriage partners. To give people more choices, not less. That's actually kind of the opposite of eugenics.
Objection 2: It's Not Gonna Work
This objection is that regardless of whether raising that marriage rate is racism, or eugenics, or wtf, it's not gonna work, because people are perfectly capable of being racist against themselves.
This is an argument I've made myself and believe in strongly, and so it's troubling to have to disavow it, but in fact I don't think it's necessarily true. Do people discriminate against themselves, within their group, based on characteristics like skin color? Sure. Is that automatically and in every case racism? Hmm.
The problem, with the idea that within-group discrimination is racism, is that the heart and soul of racism is that marriage barrier. Words that sound racist, behavior that appears racist, are words or behavior that reference or evoke that marriage barrier. That social insult. This is why so called white people can be racist against so called black people, but so called black people can't do the same thing the other way: because there's no similar social insult that so called black people can evoke or reference by their words or actions. That marriage barrier is what makes racism so much nastier than ethnic prejudice.
And if the marriage barrier is gone, the social insult will also be gone, and any discrimination that persists will lack the force that makes racism the unique evil that it is. We will have eliminated racism, not by curing racists, but by eliminating the insult.
And so it is too gonna work, so there.
Objection 3: Are You Calling Me a Racist?
(embarrassed cough) No. I'm really not calling anyone a racist. Racism, as I see it, is an emergent property of the group (not individuals) - but it emerges from individual decisions, none of which individually are racist, but all of which together give rise to racism. And in fact, as outlined above, focusing on individual racism, trying to fix individual racism, is counterproductive, because it gives us the false sense of accomplishment that has contributed so much to our failure to notice the real racism that pervades our society.
It's kind of like the movie The Matrix. The theme of this movie is that we're all just hallucinating the reality we experience, while in reality aliens are using us for their own vile purposes. With racism, we're all hallucinating that race is a reality, when in actual reality, race has no significance whatever.
And it's not our fault. It's really not. None of us wrote, directed, or star in the movie. But we're all watching it. And unfortunately only some of us have the ability to turn around and find the switch, on the projector, and flip it off. That's what needs to happen. We need to show so called white guys the switch and get them to flip the movie off. Again, as outlined above.
Objection 4: Manipulating People Into Marriage is Just Wrong
More wrong than racism? I would hope not. I would hope that the chance to make progress, at very little cost, on what has seemed to be a very difficult problem, would be attractive. I mean, we don't need a whole new bureaucracy, or a government program to do this, we don't have to split the country up into pieces, no one has to suffer or die... although there are some mostly so called white people (not many) who will flat upchuck in their Wheaties when they hear the plan. That is an emotional reaction. They'll get over it.
Secondly, what we're doing right now is manipulating people OUT of interracial marriages. Subconsciously, of course, and you only see it when you look at the bulk statistics - but it is manipulation nonetheless. If manipulation is wrong, well, we're wrong right now. I don't think that's going to change. Manipulation - in marriages and out of them - is something societies do. Something people do.
Thirdly, when people object to manipulating people into marriage, they're generally speaking of individual manipulations toward specific marriages. This plan is the opposite of trying to limit people's choices. This plan is an attempt to expand the range of people from which so called white guys can and will select marriage partners. Not so good for the so called white women who have benefited from that reduced gene pool - but they will have an expanded gene pool of their own to draw from, which ought to make up for it.
Objection 5: It's Social Engineering
I would say that every time we pass a law we do social engineering. You can't stop people committing murder - but you can try to make it costly to do so. That's social engineering. And again, which is worse: social engineering, or racism? I would hope racism.
Objection 6: It's Genocide
This is kind of the "it's racist, to destroy white people" argument in reverse: this argument is that flooding the so called black population with so called white genes will destroy the black population. To me this is racism. The argument's basis, I think, is the idea that each so called race has some mystical essence that must not be destroyed. That seems to me to be a racist argument. There is no pure-blooded anything. Every time you have sex you mix blood. Get over it.
Objection 7: You Want Everyone to Have Indiscriminate Sex
Someone posted a clip from the movie Bulworth, in which some wacko said the answer to racism was for everyone to just fuck everyone else indiscriminately. No, no, no, and no. In fact: no. This is not a plan to raise the rate of indiscriminate sex. This is a plan to raise the marriage rate. Focus, people! lol
Objection 8: Interracial Marriage is On the Rise Anyway
This is the kind of argument you get from people who read and value Pew Research articles. Their point is that if it's all getting better and better anyway, why not just watch TV? But Pew Research researchers seem to think anti-Hispanic prejudice is racism, anti-Asian prejudice is racism, and anti-anything prejudice is racism. Thus they define Asians and white Hispanics and god knows how many others as separate races, and draw their weird conclusions pretty much at random. But that marriage barrier is a big deal. Without a marriage barrier, it's not racism. And I've seen no evidence that Pew Research researchers have even realized this, much less that they care. (My sense is that Pew Research exists primarily to find evidence to support Democratic talking points, but who knows.) Of course if you conflate people for whom there is a marriage barrier with people for whom there isn't, your results are going to be meaningless. That is what Pew Research has done, and I recommend you stay away from their stuff.
Objection 9: It Will Destroy the Democratic Party as We Know It
This is a little harder to answer, because I think it's true. As soon as it becomes clear that our country is actually on track to eliminate racism, millions of so called black voters will suddenly discover that conservatism isn't really such a dumb idea after all, and they will vacate the Democratic Party. There will be very little left, when they go. Not all will mourn.
Objection 10: It Will Destroy the Black Community
This too is a hard objection to answer. Once we're all so called black, what will be left of the so called black community? How will they recognize one another? They won't. We'll be them. It will be a big change. Toni Morrison's book Sula seems to indicate that there are so called black people who won't shed too many tears, at this prospect, and so I hope it won't be too wrenching for them. I hope that eliminating that marriage barrier will be a fair payment for whatever they lose, in terms of community.
Objection 11: How Dare We?
How dare we make such changes to the so called black community, without getting their consent first? My answer is, this whole country has been working on the problem of racism for a long enough time that I think we all agree it's time we actually did something about it. Getting the consent of the so called black community would require establishing a national so called black congress, for that purpose, and even then that congress would have only as much legitimacy as our current Federal Congress does, which is to say, not much at all. I for one am not prepared to put in that kind of energy and effort on it for so little return. If they want to riot to prevent the elimination of racism, that'd be something new. That'd be a sight worth seeing. I think if they want to stop it bad enough, they'll find a way to make their voices heard.
Objection 12: It's Unnecessary
This objection goes as follows. We've dramatically lowered the probability of having a race riot. We don't hang grandma from a tree anymore. We've halfway integrated the schools. We've elected a black president. What the heck else can we do? We've made a LOT of PROGRESS. There's no need.
And I really covered this up above. My answer is, we've made a lot of progress against the APPEARANCE of racism. The thing itself, not so much. If that marriage rate had been steadily declining, and was at 30% or 50% of its colorblind ratio, I couldn't plausibly make this argument. That would be real progress against real racism. But it's not declining. (Well it is, but so slowly that it will take over 15,000 years to get to colorblind... if nothing else happens in the meantime. Ha. Ha.) It is TWO ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE away from colorblind. People that work with numbers know, you can't wave off that kind of discrepancy with creative hallucinations about cultural and economic differences. And as I've said before, it's that marriage barrier that is the real heart of racism. That's what we need to make progress against. Anything else is just sound and wind.
Well, that's it. Questions, comments, or remarks, ladies and gentlemen? Honk if you got to the end...

2023.06.10 00:25 bmactruck Help!!

A few months ago I was shopping for some art for my office. I found some art prints that were paintings or drawings of the vintage 1988 Playmate TMNT toys. They were incredible. I believe they offered all four turtles as well as a few of the villains. I never got around to ordering them then and now I am having trouble finding them. The prints could be ordered in a variety of sizes and I believe I found them on Etsy. Does anyone have any info on something similar or seen what I’m referring to. Thanks everyone.

2023.06.10 00:18 emille84 Good News Update

Hello everyone, first, I just have to say thank you to this sub and everyone in it. I have spent the last three weeks reading every single post, commenting on many, posting a few of my own because of my NIPT experience. I will always be so grateful for the warmth and support coming from this group.
I wanted to update and send a little good news into this group so the happy stories are well-represented. I had a NIPT draw at 13w that came back inconclusive, and a redraw at 14w4d that came back inconclusive, too. The test was Qnatal through Quest Diagnostics, so I never did learn my actual percentage either time, but both were due to low fetal fraction (Quest does not run the test at all when they see the fraction is below 4% so it’s “inconclusive” not “high risk” like many Natera people have dealt with). I was referred to a GC who took all of my family history and my spouse’s and recommended a Quad if we wanted it, and my OB allowed an elective Ultrasound.l for the following day at 17w.
My ultrasound was yesterday, and baby showed absolutely NO signs of any defects, measured perfectly, moved, strong heartbeat, and I learned that I’m having a baby girl.
She is not in my arms yet, and I suppose I won’t fully calm down until then, but I know the pain that so many of you are experiencing if you’re waiting on test results and scared about your options and all the variables out there. My heart will always go out to every parent in that position because these three weeks have been the hardest time in my life. You really don’t quite get it until you’ve gone there.
Thank you, again, for the time and opportunity to be apart of such a supportive group. I hope I can pay it forward in the future.

2023.06.10 00:08 NeitherExtension7218 Are these hormone levels normal? (22, 3 Months HRT, Mono-therapy)

Hello! Just got my 3 month blood test back today and had a look at the results and they're... interesting? Perplexing perhaps? Hoping y'all could help me see if it's something to be worried about or not...
Oestradiol (pmol/L) Testosterone (nmol/L)
Normal Range (Male) 28 - 156 8.6 - 29.0
Pre HRT Result 52 16.2
3 Month Result 157 24.4
So yeah, my oestrogen is up, which is nice, but so is my testosterone?
I've been feeling better than ever mentally and the HRT is having effect as I've started slight breast development so it's doing something that the testosterone isn't hampering I guess.
I just find it strange that my testosterone levels have gone up after 3 months and I'm not sure what to make of it? Is this normal, a fluctuation or too soon to tell?
For reference, I'm aged 22, my endocrinologist put me on a mono-therapy regimen, taking 2mg of Progynova two times a day (every 12 hours)
Thanks in advance :)

2023.06.10 00:00 ChronoisCross1999 Ideas for New Evolutions for Old Pokemon for Gen 10 Australia Based Region Part 1: Kanto Pokemon

So I've had some ideas for evolutions that could be given to old Pokemon from Gens 1-7 for an Australian based region ever since shortly after Gen 8 released, but never really posted them online because I wasn't sure what the rules for posting fanmade Pokemon ideas with their abilities, stats and inspirations were, but with the moderate success of my posts for my ideas for starters and story path ideas on this sub, I've decided to go ahead and post my ideas for 29 new additions to previous Pokemon lines that aren't regional or paradox forms, but are actual additions to the evolution line like Annihilape, Farigiraf, etc. from Gen 9.
What I'll be doing in this series of posts is gradually going through the first seven generations of Pokemon and choosing which Pokemon would be best suited to gain an evolution based on the wildlife and ecological conditions in Australia, as well as a few that I just think deserve to be buffed due to them being kind of underwhelming despite having a lot of potential.
I'll be listing what their classification in the Pokedex would be, how they factor into the previous evolution line, their abilities, their fully evolved stats (as well as how much that stat increased or decreased from its previous stage in parentheses beside it), and any other relevant notes explaining the evolution and what new role they could factor into. Also keep in mind that the Base Stat Total for these Pokemon will for the most part stay between the 500-530 range because of the Astral Ascension mechanic of the region allowing the temporary use of a Pokemon's second ability in battle, but there will be exceptions if the evolution is a gender counterpart evolution of an existing Pokemon or if I feel their stats should be slightly highelower than that range depending on what would fit their existing design.
Before getting into the evolution descriptions, if you haven't seen my other posts on an Australian based region detailing my ideas for starters and the possible story paths that could be included, they can be found by following the links below. Without further ado, let's get into the new evolutions!

Ampereow (Fearow Evolution)
Classification: Thunder Bird Pokemon
Evolution Line: Spearow (Normal/Flying)- Fearow (Normal/Flying) (Evolve at Level 20)- Ampereow (Electric/Flying) (Evolve Fearow with Electric Astral Type at Lightning Ridge)
Abilities: Volt Absorb/Sniper
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 85 (+20)
Attack: 110 (+20)
Defense: 75 (+10)
Sp. Attack: 50 (-11)
Sp. Defense: 75 (+14)
Speed: 120 (+20)
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 515
Other Notes: This might be the most out of left field evolution out of all the 29 Pokemon that I've chosen to give evolutions, but it goes to show how much of an impact the Dream World in the Auborn region can have on non-native Pokemon. It is thought that Ampereow first came into existence when a flock of Fearow flew south from Kanto for the winter, eventually landing in the Lightning Ridge mountain region (based on Thunder Ridge, an actual mountain in Australia). Upon landing there, they realized that they couldn't resist the strong lightning energy present in the area, but some of the Fearow felt an innate connection with the electricity present, and when they came into contact with some dream energy, they felt a strong desire to gain the electric type so they could be more like the legendary Pokemon Zapdos back home, which caused them to evolve into Ampereow. This population would remain in the Auborn region, while the other Fearow who didn't have the Electric Astral type went back to Kanto for the summer.
Getting to the battle side of things, I felt like Fearow deserved to get more attack and speed to become a more effective sweeper to help it gain some relevance again after Pidgeot got its own mega evolution back in Gen 6, while Fearow got nothing, and it has since been outclassed by some of the other regional birds as well, which made me think it deserved to get a third stage in its line. Upon Evolution, Ampereow will learn the signature move Thunder Flap, which is a physical Electric type move with 80 base power that deals either electric or flying type damage depending on what is most effective on the opponent. This move will not ignore the Ground-type immunity of electric type moves, however.

Nogard (Arbok Evolution)
Classification: Dragon Serpent Pokemon
Evolution Line: Ekans (Poison)- Arbok (Poison) (Evolve at Level 22)- Nogard (Poison/Dragon) (Level Up + Hold Dragon Scale)
Abilities: Intimidate/Shed Skin/Unnerve
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 80 (+20)
Attack: 115 (+20)
Defense: 85 (+16)
Sp. Attack: 50 (-15)
Sp. Defense: 85 (+6)
Speed: 100 (+20)
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 515
Other Notes: This is the only idea that isn't my own, since I've seen the concept of having a Dragon/Poison type evolution for Arbok before called Nogard, which is dragon spelled backwards, but it just worked too well for an Australian based region like Auborn, so I decided to include it anyway. The stat spread and decision to keep all the abilities the same were all my own, though. With Nogard, I felt like Arbok really only needed a slight buff to its stats across the board to become more viable, along with it gaining the dragon secondary type for added offensive capabilities, which has only been used before for Dragalge and Naganedel.

Paraspect (Parasect Evolution)
Classification: Mush Reaper Pokemon
Evolution Line: Paras (Bug/Grass)- Parasect (Bug/Grass) (Evolve at Level 24)- Paraspect (Bug/Ghost) (Learn Spore Scythe + Level Up)
Abilities: Effect Spore/Dry Skin/Cursed Body
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 80 (+20)
Attack: 115 (+20)
Defense: 90 (+10)
Sp. Attack: 80 (+20)
Sp. Defense: 90 (+10)
Speed: 60 (+30)
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 515
Other Notes: Parasect might be one of the worst Pokemon that were introduced in Generation 1. It had three 4x weaknesses to Fire, Flying, and Poison (Bug was weak to Poison in Gen 1) and although one of its quad weaknesses was reduced to a double weakness, it really hasn't gotten that much better, especially when compared to the glow-up that regional bugs got in Gen 5 and 7. With this project, I wanted to add in a few Dual type combinations that haven't been used yet as well as ones that have only been used once previously, which is what I did here with Paraspect, since only Shedinja has the Bug/Ghost typing as of Gen 9, and it's a gimmick Pokemon. Parasect will learn Spore Scythe at Level 36, which is a signature move that has 60 base power and is a Grass type attack that has a 10% chance of putting the opponent to sleep. Paraspect has a similar backstory for its evolution to Annihilape, where upon learning Spore Scythe it realized how much the spore on its back was taking advantage of it, so the spirit of Parasect decided to take back control of the husk it used to call its body, leading to it evolving into Paraspect.

Manatey (Dewgong Evolution)
Classification: Manatee Pokemon
Evolution Line: Seel (Water)- Dewgong (WateIce) (Level Up to Level 34)- Manatey (WateFairy) (Evolve Dewgong w/Fairy Astral Type)
Abilities: Thick Fat/Hydration/Water Absorb
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 100 (+10)
Attack: 60 (-10)
Defense: 90 (+10)
Sp. Attack: 90 (+20)
Sp. Defense: 105 (+10)
Speed: 70 (+0)
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 515
Other Notes: Dewgong is another one of those Gen 1 Pokemon that wasn't very memorable when it was first introduced due to being outclassed by nearly every other Water or Ice type in the game, and it hasn't really improved since then. Manatey improves on this by giving it a more memorable design, which I imagine would draw inspiration from mermaids like Primarina's design to reference the fact that manatees were commonly mistaken for mermaids in the past. It also gains two immunities to Water and Dragon thanks to both its ability and its new fairy typing, which replaced its Ice type for better defensive utility. With its new typing, it'll take 1.0 damage from Ice type attacks because of Thick Fat, but now Fire-type attacks also only deal 1.0 damage rather than the 2.0 it used to because of its secondary Ice typing, which also helps to make it a bit tankier overall.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Insomneous (Hypno Evolution)
Classification: Nightmare Tapir Pokemon
Evolution Line: Drowzee (Psychic)- Hypno (Psychic) (Evolve at Level 26)- Insomneous (Psychic/Dark) (Learn Nightmare + Level Up)
Abilities: Insomnia/InfiltratoInner Focus
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 105 (+20)
Attack: 60 (-13)
Defense: 100 (+30)
Sp. Attack: 93 (+20)
Sp. Defense: 125 (+10)
Speed: 47 (-20)
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 530
Other Notes: Hypno always felt like it got the short end of the stick, even when it was first introduced in Generation 1. It could be caught later than Abra, which outclassed it due to it being faster, and it only got worse as the generations went on, with it losing its base 115 special in favour of 115 special defense, and with the Psychic type in general becoming less relevant as the generations went on. With this evolution, I wanted to focus on making it more of a tank to differentiate it from other heavy hitting Psychic types, and its Forewarn ability was replaced with Infiltrator because it's infiltrating the dreams of its opponents. Its design expands on the yo-yo it held while it was a Hypno by drawing inspirations from both ventriloquists and clowns, which are common fears that people tend to have.

Kangaskid (Kangaskhan Pre-Evolution)
Classification: Baby Kanga Pokemon
Evolution Line: Kangaskid (Normal) (Breed Kangaskhan and Kangasking)- Kangaskhan (Normal) (Max Friendship w/ Female Kangaskid) OR Kangasking (Normal/Ground) (Max Friendship w/ Male Kangaskid)
Abilities: Early Bird/Scrappy/Inner Focus
1st Form Stats:
HP: 75
Attack: 65
Defense: 50
Sp. Attack: 30
Sp. Defense: 50
Speed: 60
1st Form Base Stat Total: 330
Other Notes: Kangaskhan has always felt like it needed a pre-evolution, since it's baby is quite literally already in its pouch when it hatches from an egg, and the mega-evolution it received in Gen 6 didn't help matters at all. To justify giving it a baby form, I also gave it a split Male/Female Evolution.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Kangasking (Kangaskid Male Evolution)
Classification: Parent Pokemon
Evolution Line: Kangaskid (Normal) (Breed Kangaskhan and Kangasking)- Kangaskhan (Normal) (Max Friendship w/ Female Kangaskid) OR Kangasking (Normal/Ground) (Max Friendship w/ Male Kangaskid)
Abilities: Moxie/Scrappy/Inner Focus
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 90
Attack: 105
Defense: 80
Sp. Attack: 40
Sp. Defense: 80
Speed: 95
Fully Evolved Base Stat Total: 490
Other Notes: The male counterpart to Kangaskhan is more attack focused and is slightly faster than it, while also gaining the ground-type for STAB ground coverage, with the added bonus of having Moxie to increase its sweeping potential over Kangaskhan. Aside from that, it has the same base stat total as Kangaskhan.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Calfierce (Tauros & Miltank Pre-Evolution)
Classification: Fierce Calf Pokemon
Evolution Line: Calfierce (Normal) (Breed Tauros & Miltank)- Tauros (Normal) (Learn Wild Charge + Level Up Male Calfierce) OR Miltank (Normal) (Learn Rollout + Level Up Female Calfierce)
Abilities: Intimidate/Scrappy/Sap Sipper
1st Form Stats:
HP: 50
Attack: 65
Defense: 65
Sp. Attack: 30
Sp. Defense: 45
Speed: 75
1st Form Base Stat Total: 330
Other Notes: Tauros & Miltank have always felt like they should be related in some form, since they have the same base stat total and are generally found in similar locations in the games, and are usually even side by side in the regional Pokedex of games that they both appear in, but no connection has ever been canonically established between the two. Adding in Calfierce would allow trainers to gain access to the family earlier than they typically would while also not handing the player a single stage Pokemon with high stats that would steamroll the early game.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Mytheon (Eevee Dragon-Type Evolution)
Classification: Legend Pokemon
Evolution Line: Eevee (Normal)- Mytheon (Dragon) (Level Up + Hold Dragon Scale)
Abilities: Multiscale/Pure Power
Fully-Evolved Stats:
HP: 95
Attack: 60
Defense: 65
Sp. Attack: 130
Sp. Defense: 65
Speed: 110
Fully-Evolved Base Stat Total: 525 (585 when factoring in Pure Power)
Other Notes: The Dragon-type is the only one of the original special attacking types from the first three generations that doesn't have an Eeveelution, so I decided to rectify that with Mytheon. To commemorate the 10th Generation of Pokemon as well as having to wait nearly 30 years to get it, Mytheon technically has the highest base stat total out of all the Eeveelutions when factoring in Pure Power, which doubles Mytheon's Base attack from 60 to 120. It also has a gimmick with its abilities where you essentially have to decide whether you have double attack or double defense (at full HP only), giving it good synergy with the new Astral Ascension gameplay mechanic.

And there you have it. Part 2 of this series will focus on the evolutions for the Johto and Hoenn Pokemon, so look forward to seeing that in a week or two. I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on these evolutions in the comments!

Lore:
In the late 19th century, during the unsettling era of the Industrial Revolution, a small farming community nestled deep within the heartland of a forgotten country thrived under the care of a diligent and compassionate farmer named Jonathan Blackwood. As the crops flourished, so did the hopes and dreams of the townsfolk who relied on the bountiful harvest to sustain their humble lives.
Jonathan possessed an uncanny talent for tending to the land, seemingly blessed by nature itself. With his expertise, the fields yielded more than ever before, and the villagers marveled at the abundance of food that spilled forth from the earth. The sight of the flourishing crops enchanted the townsfolk, and their admiration for Jonathan soon transformed into something akin to worship.
However, as the seasons passed, the prosperity that once enveloped the farming community began to wane. The crops withered, livestock perished, and a sense of despair hung heavily in the air. Blighted by a mysterious blight that defied explanation, the town faced an imminent threat of famine.
Desperate to save his beloved community, Jonathan turned to the forbidden arts of the occult. Rumors whispered of his nocturnal excursions to ancient burial grounds, where he sought guidance from the spirits of the departed. Driven by his love for the people who depended on him, Jonathan was willing to do whatever it took to restore the land's fertility and safeguard their futures.
It was during one fateful moonlit night that Jonathan stumbled upon a hidden chamber within an ancient burial mound. Within its depths lay an ornate lantern, its ethereal glow pulsating with a sinister energy. Overwhelmed by a mixture of awe and trepidation, Jonathan cautiously reached out and touched the lantern, and as his fingers brushed against its surface, an unholy pact was forged.
The spirit that inhabited the lantern, a malevolent entity known as Mirage, sought vengeance for its own tragic demise centuries earlier. Empowered by the farmer's desperation, it offered Jonathan a twisted bargain. In exchange for the spirit's guidance and the restoration of the land, Jonathan would become the vessel through which the spirit would unleash its wrath upon the world.
Blinded by his desire to save his community, Jonathan accepted the wicked pact. In that moment, Mirage's essence seeped into his very being, transforming him into a grotesque amalgamation of man and spirit. The once kind-hearted farmer was reborn as The Scarecrow, a twisted figure shrouded in tattered garments and adorned with straw-stuffed limbs, his hollow eyes burning with otherworldly fury.
With the newfound powers granted by Mirage, The Scarecrow returned to his dying community. As he roamed the moonlit fields, the eerie glow of the lantern he now wielded cast long, haunting shadows across the barren landscape. The presence of The Scarecrow alone brought terror to the hearts of the townsfolk, as they realized that their beloved farmer had been irrevocably changed by dark forces.
No longer bound by the limitations of mortal flesh, The Scarecrow's malevolence manifested through the powers of the lantern. As he stalked his prey, the lantern's glow intensified, and an oppressive mist engulfed the surroundings. Within this ethereal fog, the Hunted found their senses dulled, their movements slowed, and their chances of survival diminished.
The Scarecrow reveled in the torment of his victims, deriving sadistic pleasure from their despair. The once benevolent farmer had become an embodiment of fear, a being who lurked within the mist, harvesting the souls of those unfortunate enough to cross his path. The townsfolk's worship had been replaced by fear.

Altan's life was forever changed when she became an unwitting pawn, kidnapped by a ruthless faction as leverage in their political machinations.
Altan Khulan was torn from her family, her fate sealed as she became a captive in the midst of the war. The ruthless faction saw her as a means to exert control, a bargaining chip to manipulate their enemies. Her spirit shattered by the cruelty of her captors, Altan yearned for freedom and the reunion with her loved ones, but the fog of war veiled her hopes in darkness.
Days turned into nights, and nights into weeks, as Altan's captivity persisted. In the depths of her despair, she discovered a sliver of solace in the haunting whispers of the wind. In the darkest moments, a mysterious force resonated within her, resonating with her anguish and offering an opportunity for vengeance and release.

No longer bound by the mortal coil, she could traverse the ethereal plane and wield her spirit as a weapon, piercing the hearts of those who dared to stand in her way.

Lore:
The Prowler, a relentless and sinister hunter in the fog, once roamed the mountain resort with malicious intent. This man, whose identity remains shrouded in darkness, made the resort his hunting ground, preying upon unsuspecting victims with his deadly arsenal of a bow and arrow, traps, and a saw. His twisted desires drove him to kidnap and torment those unfortunate enough to cross his path.
One fateful day, a group of young adults arrived at the mountain resort, seeking a memorable getaway. Little did they know, their presence would become a horrifying chapter in the Prowler's dark tale. Among them were Kris, Kayley, Olivia, Kyler, Jamison, Ethan, Emma, Kara, and Anthony, each unaware of the imminent danger that awaited them.
Tragedy struck swiftly and mercilessly. Kris, a young woman full of life, tragically lost her footing and met a grim fate as her neck snapped upon impact. Kayley, another unsuspecting victim, bled out, her life force draining away. Jamison, overcome by a series of treacherous traps, met a gruesome end as his head was ensnared within their clutches. Ethan, wounded by an arrow piercing his shoulder, faced a brutal demise with his neck swiftly snapped. Emma, consumed by the unforgiving snow, was buried and suffocated beneath its icy grasp. Kara, too, fell victim to the Prowler's relentless pursuit, succumbing to a blood-soaked demise.
Yet, amidst the horrors that unfolded, three survivors emerged—Olivia, Anthony, and Kyler. In their desperate bid for survival, they managed to wound the Prowler, albeit only slightly. But in a cruel twist of fate, Anthony suffered a grievous loss, his three fingers severed in the struggle against the sadistic hunter. As they reported their harrowing ordeal to the authorities, the police were led to the mountain resort, only to discover an eerie absence. The Prowler, consumed by the ominous fog that enshrouded the realm, had vanished without a trace.
Now forever lost within the fog, the Prowler roams the twisted realm of Bloodhunt, his insatiable hunger for victims driving him to relentlessly pursue those who dare to enter his domain. The echoes of his past atrocities continue to reverberate through the mountains, serving as a haunting reminder of the terror he once inflicted upon unsuspecting souls. Olivia, Anthony, and Kyler, forever marked by their encounters with the Prowler, find themselves forever changed by their near-death experience, haunted by the nightmares that unfolded on that fateful day.
As the survivors venture into the fog-ridden realm, they must face the eternal darkness that now encompasses the Prowler. The hunt has begun anew, and their only hope for escape lies in outsmarting and evading the remorseless predator that lurks within.

Lore:
In the shadows of the 1970s, when crime and corruption permeated the streets, John Carlson emerged as a seasoned detective with a reputation for his tenacity and resourcefulness. Born and raised in a city plagued by lawlessness, John had a front-row seat to the injustices that unfolded daily. Determined to restore order and bring criminals to justice, he dedicated himself to his work, earning the respect of both his colleagues and the community he served.
John possessed an uncanny ability to uncover the truth, seeing beyond the façade and deciphering the intricate web of lies spun by criminals. His sharp mind and keen instincts made him a formidable adversary to those who sought to evade justice. However, as John delved deeper into the dark underbelly of the city, he unwittingly stumbled upon a secret society that thrived in the shadows—a clandestine organization known as Fog Whisperers.
Fueled by greed and power, Fog Whisperers operated with impunity, pulling the strings behind the scenes, orchestrating crime waves and manipulating key figures within the city. They saw John as a threat, a disruptor who posed a risk to their carefully constructed empire. In a calculated move to eliminate him, they devised a sinister plan.
One fateful night, as John tirelessly pursued a high-profile case, he received an anonymous tip leading him to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Unbeknownst to him, the tip was a carefully orchestrated trap. As he ventured deeper into the derelict building, he found himself ambushed by a group of masked assailants, agents of the Fog.
A vicious struggle ensued, but John was outnumbered and overwhelmed. Despite his valiant efforts, he was overpowered, beaten within an inch of his life. The assailants, believing they had dealt the detective a fatal blow, left him for dead, disappearing into the night.
However, fate had other plans for John. As his lifeblood seeped from his battered body, he was enveloped by an otherworldly mist, a manifestation of the very darkness he had fought against. In his darkest hour, the fog claimed him, granting him an unexpected second chance at life—but forever tethered to the fog and its twisted realm.
Now one with the fog, John emerged as a hunted survivor, trapped within the nightmarish trials orchestrated by the Fog. His skills as a detective proved invaluable in his quest for survival, enabling him to outsmart and evade the relentless hunters that pursued him. Yet, the line between self-preservation and selflessness became blurred for John. His desire to survive often clashed with his moral compass, as he would not hesitate to use his companions as distractions, ensuring his own escape.
While seen by some as a helpful survivor, John's reputation was marred by his self-serving tendencies. With every trial, he walked a precarious tightrope, balancing survival and the instinct to alert the hunter for his own benefit. His conflicted nature, a blend of resourcefulness and self-interest, painted him as a complex figure among the survivors, one whose actions could be both admired and criticized.
As John ventured deeper into the trials, he was haunted by the shadows of his past, the echoes of the crime-ridden city he had once fought to protect. In the fog's merciless embrace, he sought redemption, an opportunity to atone for the compromises he had made. The path ahead was treacherous, but John Carlson, the detective of old, remained determined to survive, to unravel the mysteries of the fog, and perhaps, find a way to free himself from its unforgiving grasp.

Kris Hackley had always been the embodiment of determination and leadership. As the captain of her local hockey team, she commanded respect and pushed her teammates to their limits. Yet, beneath her strong exterior, Kris harbored a simmering discontent towards those she perceived as unworthy or unfamiliar. It was this disdain that brought her to the fateful trip to the mountain, seeking an escape from the confines of her team and the pressure of her responsibilities. The day started with a hockey game, where Kris once again led her team to victory. But instead of relishing in the triumph, she found herself growing increasingly irritated with her teammates' shortcomings and mistakes. Seeking solace from the persistent frustration, Kris agreed to join her friends—Emma, Ethan, Anthony, Kyler, Kara, and her siblings Jamison and Kayley—for a weekend getaway in the serene mountain retreat. However, tensions began to rise as Anthony introduced a newcomer to the group—Olivia. Kris immediately resented the intrusion, perceiving Olivia as an unwelcome disruption to their tightly-knit circle. Her feelings of superiority and territoriality cast a shadow over the trip, as Kris became increasingly distant and hostile towards Olivia. As the group ventured further into the secluded mountain, their bonds began to strain under the weight of Kris's disdain. Unbeknownst to them, the dark presence of the fog had already begun to weave its way into their lives. It sensed Kris's isolation and resentment, drawing her closer to its clutches. Tragedy struck when Kris, consumed by her own emotions, failed to extend a helping hand to those in need. As they engaged in risky activities, disaster struck one by one. Kris watched in horror as Emma, Ethan, and Anthony succumbed to their fates—severing the already fragile bonds of friendship. Jamison and Kayley, her own siblings, suffered the consequences of her indifference. Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, Kris found herself separated from the remaining survivors—Olivia and Kyler. Alone in the unforgiving mountain terrain, the fog began to envelop her, offering a haunting embrace that echoed her internal turmoil. In that moment, Kris's fate intertwined with the fog, becoming one with its ethereal realm. Now, as a Hunted survivor, Kris roams the trials, forever trapped within the fog's grasp. Her once fierce determination transformed into a relentless struggle for survival, and her perceived superiority challenged by the enigmatic horrors that lurk in the shadows. The lessons learned from her past failures now guide her, as she navigates the trials with a newfound sense of humility and empathy. Though the memory of her selfishness lingers, Kris's journey through the fog offers her a chance at redemption. She seeks to overcome her former limitations and forge new bonds, recognizing that unity and selflessness are the keys to survival in this twisted fog.

2023.06.09 23:53 minervamon_ Possible RA symptoms?

Sorry, I'm sure this community has a lot of these 'diagnose me' types of threads and I apologize about being another. I understand this is not a place to seek medical advice to a T, but I'm looking, rather, for those who may have had similar experiences to help quell what's been an issue for me for over a year and a half now. Ideally, I'd like to have a particular sense of confidence in what direction to go first when I seek medical care. I am without insurance at this time and will be until the start of the new year from my work (Just missed the cut off date with this new job). That said, I don't make a ton of money and I'd like to try my best at getting myself into a place that can help the most without hopefully paying out of pocket for a 'Nothing I see wrong here, try this'. I did go to a chiro who said everything looks good on my end after providing a small look-through of my ankles/feet and said my range of motion/stance and posture was all great. He referred me to a podiatrist and/or a blood test for possible autoimmune. I will provide a quick TL;DR here with the bullet points and then the much larger summary for those interested. All opinions and guidance are appreciated and I will not follow anything here as medical advice, but rather as opinions and suggestions for where to seek it properly.

TLDR

____

32M 6ft / 165lbs

Started with foot pain in bottom of feet. Sensitive to walking. Actual pain where rest helped. Lasted 3-4 months swapping shoes / insoles. Magically got better, no idea on what specifically helped.

Months later, foot pain eased up. legs started acting up. No pain, but discomfort. Weak leg feeling, specifically, back of leg behind the kneecap area. Again, lasted about 4-5 months, who knows?

Then it became my ankles / feet. Still the present issue now. No foot pain like last time, but there's still some sort of 'sore' there where pressure on it can hurt (like baseball rolling) but definitely an issue with ankle discomfort (not pain). Feels like I need to pop/crack the ankle and bottom of foot but can't. By far my most annoying issue thus far because it is admittedly a bit fatiguing and bothersome feeling like something there needs to crack or pop when stretched but nothing seems to.

No noticeable swelling

*Seems to always affect one side a day. Lord knows what side it will be when I wake up, but if it's my left, it's my left for that day and my right feels lovely. Next day, it can be the opposite. This pattern is 100% to my knowledge. Always i one or the other side. Never have it be both. Or at least, one side seems to be much, much more noticeable with it daily.*

Chiro Doc said everything looks fine with posture, positioning and range of motion.

I have decent flexibility (Never was great) but as much as stretching can burn, I don't feel really limited anywhere.

I can go run, workout, hike, etc. I don't feel limited in my daily activities. The issue is not exasperated by physical activity any more or worse than just laying in bed.

This 'feeling' is darn near 100% of my day, be it walking around at work or sitting on the couch, I feel the tingly/tightness/need to stretch feeling on my ankles. Sometimes walking feels better than sitting around, or maybe that's due to my mind being preoccupied.

*My mother has RA and first got that looked at/confirmed in her early 50's when it started acting up. She is now on a huge gluten free / RA regiment for years.*

*No insurance for a while. Looking to get recommendations or stories from people with similar issues and what direction they think would be best to seek medical advice from because I fear spending a lot of money going to x,y or z only to be redirected elsewhere. Podiatrist? Bloodwork for RA?

End of TLDR. Now, a lengthier summary for those interested.

So! My story! I'm a 31 year old male. I work full time as a janitor / maintenance role. I walk / stand for 80% of my job with the occasional kneeling here and there. I have been doing this type of work now for about 5 years. The whole journey begun with pain in both my feet on a random day, out of the blue. I was at work and just felt pain in the bottom of my feet, similar to having just taken a barefoot walk on rocks for hours. I'd been using some older pair of shoes that were seemingly comfortable in every way but they were probably worn out so I thought to simply purchase some new ones as maybe the insoles had grown non-existent at this point. Thinking that would solve it within a few days, nope! Or, not really. For the next 2-3 months or so I was now on a mission to find proper insoles, arch support (I have higher arches) and/or anything that could possibly relieve something like Plantar Fasciitis I thought I may have had. I don't know how/when/why but eventually I wasn't as sensitive in that area whilst walking at my job. Couldn't tell you why I finally just managed to be ok again, but yay!

In the next couple of weeks or so, I started to feel like I had weak knees. Specifically, I felt a lot of discomfort. (I need to really emphasize discomfort because I don't classify anything past the initial foot issue above as painful. This knee issue and what occurs yet to be followed are more classified as discomfort and 'tightness' to me). The specific area I was feeling the discomfort was typically behind my kneecap area, so opposite side of the leg behind the kneecap, where the knee bends. It felt..I don't know, 'weak' It didn't have a particular tightness to it, but I still tried to foam roll there and stretch well. This lasted a good 5-6 months or so with an occasional other spot on my legs that felt more present, but all associated with the same tingly/weak leg feeling. Compression sleeves / foam rolling and massage tools didn't seem to alleviate much. Stretching felt good but I couldn't tell huge differences after a few weeks.

After this 5-6 month period, it became my ankles and somewhat my feet again and that's where I am at today. Let's call it another 6 months or so of these being the issue after the legs issue subsided. Everything is now subsided to my ankles and occasionally feet. Important to note that the feet are not nearly as painful or sensitive as the first experience where I was having difficulty walking most days. What I feel now is an ankle tightness primarily. A feeling like I NEED to crack or pop my ankle for relief but I never can no matter how I stretch it. Accompanied with the ankle is the bottom of the foot again (specifically along the arch, outside of the foot and the middle of the foot areas). No pain for either, really, just a discomfort and tightness, again. The ankle feels good when I can rotate it and stretch it in a circle and I usually can make a small 'pop' that ultimately doesn't do much but it does feel good to do from time to time. I like to roll my foot on a baseball and find it helps break down something down there but I'm not sure if it's helping long term.

2023.06.09 23:52 Presumably_Not_A_Cat The Martian is just another Isekai

Andy Weirs The Martian is nothing more than a cleverly disguised entry into the ever-popular isekai genre. Yes, you heard it right. We might miss Truck-Kun, but his distant cousin, the rude Sandstorm-Chan, still delivers.
In isekais, the protagonist is usually taken away to another world or universe where they must fend for themselves. In The Martian, Mark Watney finds himself stranded alone on... another planet. Suddenly, our brave astronaut is forced to navigate an environment that might as well be an alien world.
Also, let's not forget the isekai trope of having an overpowered main character who possesses unparalleled abilities or knowledge. While Mark Watney may not be endowed with magical powers or cheat codes, he is portrayed as someone with a vast knowledge, not only in botany and mechanical engineering, but also on other "science"-stuff- He clearly possesses more expertise than your average astronaut could ever dream of. And of course, he almost never fails in his endeavors and if he does, it is never due to his own personal shortcomings, which appear to be non-existent, but rather due to external causes outside his control. Still, like your generic isekai, he perseveres, persists and perdures and emerges victorious with little to no trouble at all.
While our hero is not collecting his very own harem like in most isekai (unless you count potatoes), he does attract a wide array of female admirers who get weirdly sexual about him. Meanwhile, his male colleagues maintain a professional respect for his exploits. Can't have any homoeroticism in our male targeted escapism. But just like in other isekai stories, side characters serve as mere plot devices, with little to no character arc of their own and distinguishable features that go beyond their roles in relation to the protagonist. All secondary characters simply get sidelined for the sake of the protagonist's heroic exploits.
Mark Watney loves, loves, loves the grind. I believe he even mentions it himself at some point. I distinctly remember the time he watneyed all over his crops. It's almost as if he's trying to level up his survival skills like an isekai character grinding for experience points. Page after page, I awaited a status window to pop up, displaying all his newfound skills and abilities of Mars Simulator: Potato Edition. It doesn't happen (spoiler!), but I wouldn't have been surprised if it did.
It's time to acknowledge the truth! The Martian is not just a science fiction tale; it's a clever ploy to introduce unsuspecting Western readers to the gripping genre that is isekai. By masquerading as a serious space survival story, it slyly captures readers' attention and draws them into the world of homocidial truck drivers and overpowered protagonists.

2023.06.09 23:48 laudav_art Ethics/legality of using someone else's taxidermy as reference for my painting?

Maybe this is a really dumb question lol but I'd love to discuss this with people who know more about IP and even just what's considered an art faux pas.
I have an idea for a painting that I'm looking to enter in a local art competition. It involves referencing a piece of taxidermy (two animals together in a very distinctive pose) at my local museum. I would be lighting it myself, making a digital composit with a still-life scene I'll make at home and using this closely as a reference for an oil painting.
It'll be a small scene on a table, kinda classical, a branch/vase/fruits/veggies/flowers etc, with these taxidermy animals in the middle. They'll be the main focus but not the whole idea. One animal is about to eat the other one so it's a recognizable work.
It just seems like maybe a bit of a grey area because obviously taxidermy is an art form in itself, and somebody else made it. Does this count as a form of intellectual property that I can't utilize for my own art?
It's possible that it's an old piece of taxidermy and the artist is no longer alive. I'd also be getting permission from the museum and having somebody let me in the cabinet to photograph it properly.
Would it be considered the same as... using pottery in a still life, or a marble statue, something somebody else has made? What's the consensus on that? If it's in a scene and I'm painting it with other stuff, that would be changing it and not copying it anyway, right?
I would assume this would be okay but I want to be certain since this is for an art competition and I'd like to not accidentally get in trouble :D thank you!

2023.06.09 23:22 aitk6n Can neck, shoulder, wrist and ankle aches be related if they're all on the same side of the body (left)?

(28M)
Although I can't quite pin point it, there's something going on with the left side of my body. I've had a dull ache at the lower, left side of my neck, a dull ache on my lower left shoulder, which sometimes feels like it may be coming from deep inside my bicep. My left wrist is slightly aching 70% of the time, as well as my left ankle. It feels like I sometimes have an urge to try and crack it (wrist) or bend it left and right. It's also slightly weak; my entire left side feels noticeably weaker than the right. Although it is not my strong side (right handed and right footed), it doesn't feel right.
I've had an x-ray on my left shoulder which showed no abnormalities. I was actually surprised at this result as I was expecting (maybe hoping?) something. I can push my left arm down towards the ground and my arm pops out and slightly drops, with ease sometimes. I have stopped doing this for the last 2-3 months and it does feel like more force would be required to do it again.
I've been seeing a chiropractor for 2-3 months (8 or 9 sessions), and I do get relief on my neck after an adjustment session. But it only lasts for a few days before it feels like I need to crack it again. There is, what I can only describe as a knot, on the lower left side of my neck. Sometimes if I'm driving my neck may start to hurt as if it needs a rest, and if I lightly squeeze my fingers into this knot, it relieves the strained neck feeling. I have mentioned this to my chiropractor and she has felt it, although she didn't say much about it.
I'm wondering could this knot(?) be the cause of this? The pain is usually worse in the morning until I stretch. I use a Groove pillow and tend to sleep on my right side more than my left. Not because of the pain, I just find it comfier.
My chiropractor said if we see no improvements, she's going to refer me for a kinetic MRI. I haven't actually saw a medical doctor yet as our health system is not in its best state.
I'm a healthy 28 year old male. I'm 5ft 10in and 11 stone. I'm a telecoms engineer and I climb cell towers from time to time with a harness and tool bag. I also ride a motorcycle (sport style).
I've experienced this for, I think, maybe 3 years.
Now the final part, which is fairly personal: I had surgery for a hernia when I was maybe 5-6 years old, and my left testicle seems to be stuck and doesn't hang normally like my right does. It feels like it's caught at the top and hurts when you lightly try to pull it down. Not sure if it's related, but for a while I've had a feeling it could be, in some way.
EDIT: I completely forgot about the left side of my jaw... I think I may have TMJ on my left side. It clicks when I eat, I hear what I can only describe as crunching when I move it a certain way etc.

2023.06.09 23:18 Presumably_Not_A_Cat The Martian is just another Isekai

2023.06.09 23:15 No_Pomegranate7134 Translation help for adding Ukrainian subtitles: What is the best translation?

Source video title: I knew your father...
For those who know Ukrainian, I strongly recommend those who are C1 or C2 level or native fluency to provide a translation.
Please refrain from using Yandex, Google or DeepL as they don't translate it correctly, since the video is referring to the perspective on memorial day, also using the analogy of saying he knew his father as a dedication to those who have lost someone they've loved in war, also to sons or daughters who have lost their dad in the war, paying tribute to servicemen.
Keep in mind when adding Ukrainian translation: the speaker in the video is male, so cases will matter, he is saying it from a first person perspective in a expressive / poetic manner, also in the context of the military.
Can you provide a proper translation of the written transcript in Ukrainian?
I'll add the transcription of the video:
I knew your father...
He was a great man, a brother
I know you miss him alot, me too...
I bet a day goes by when you don't think about him...
Kind of seem like when you lose someone you love, every day is memorial day
Your father and I actually went through training together
If it hadn't been for him, I'm not sure I made it
He was so strong, physically & mentally
We were so glad to be assigned to the same team, to be able to make a difference together
To change the world
I remember him challenging us and crushing us during our train-ups
We were all better because of him
I remember all of our deployments together, some good places and good missions, but some bad places and some bad missions.
Your father never complained.
He was solid & competent man.
While most people talk too much these days, your father truly was a quiet professional
While most people pretend, your father was the real deal
I'll never forget seeing him and the makeshift chapel before our last mission
No doubt he was praying for protection for you and for your mom
I remember your father telling us how proud he was of you and how much he loved you
I remember the day he died and how he died
He was a hero until his last breath
So when you miss him the most, give me a call
I understand how when you lose someone you love, everyday is memorial day

2023.06.09 23:03 xtremexavier15 TSROTI 8 (pt 2)

The episode resumed on the giant octopus with its spiked tentacle held menacingly over the Maggots. It growled and reared the appendage back, prompting Geoff to quickly jump to the back with his teammates just before the front was slammed down upon, launching all four into the air.
They flew screaming across the lake, their shadows passing over the swimming Rats, and finally they crashed down onto the rocky beach of Wawanakwa. They groaned in pain, and Anne Maria was the first to lift her head and look around.
"Hey," she said, "we're in first place!"
"Rad," Geoff weakly groaned.
"The Maggots win," Chris called down from above, leaning out the open door of the helicopter, "and get these as a reward!"
He dropped down two objects, which Molly quickly caught – one was a compass, and the other fell open to reveal a map of the island. "A map and compass," the indie chick said flatly as her teammates looked at their reward.
"I'll keep those so I can navigate us better," Scarlett said, swiping the objects away from Molly.
"Weellll, look who just washed up!" Chris said, turning his attention to the edge of the water as the Rats finally swam ashore.
"I blame the octopus for leaving us like this," Sierra said.
"You can say that again," Scott responded.
"Put a sock in it!" Chris called down to them. "Now, the second part of today's challenge started off as a practical joke involving classic Total Drama competitor Amy. Buuuut, it's turned into more of a rescue mission," he said, pointing a remote down at the beach and pressing the button.
The shot cut to both teams on shore as they turned and looked at a television cart that had just been wheeled over by a long-haired white male intern. The screen cut from static to none other than Amy trapped inside what appeared to be a somewhat spacious wooden coffin. She woke up and bumped her head on the lid. "What? Where am I?" she asked, looking around in confusion. "I'm buried alive?!" she exclaimed and pounded on the low ceiling with her fist in a rather panicked fashion. "GET ME OUT OF HERE!"
"Burying someone alive is super dangerous," Trent scolded, "even by your standards."
"That's why we're using the buddy system," Chris told them. "And instead of letting last year's losers have all the fun, we brought in one of this year's duds!"
The cast's direction moved back to live feed of Amy as the sound of snoring was heard coming from within her prison. The camera zoomed out to show Katie curled up and asleep in the coffin with her.
"Katie! She's back!" DJ exclaimed excitedly. "What happened to her?"
"She ate a lot of Chef's buttolini," Chris explained as the focus cut back to the beach, "so she's gonna be out for a couple more minutes," he laughed.
"That is just messed up for you to do!" DJ scowled.
Confessional: Sammy
"Is it just me, or does Chris become more and more deranged with each passing season?" Sammy talked to the camera.
Confessional Ends
Chris carried on. "Maggots! You've got your compass and your map to the general vicinity of the chests at the other side of the island. First team to rescue the girls wins the challenge. Now go!"
Geoff, Molly, Anne Maria, and Scarlett ran off into the woods without another word, but as the Rats moved to follow, Chris landed his helicopter on the sand in front of them. "Uh-tu-tut-tut," he said, "not so fast. To the losers go the penalty belts. Chef," he turned to his grinning assistant, "lock 'em in!"
The cook stepped out of the pilot's seat and walked over to the five Rats, and the footage skipped ahead to him locking a metal belt around Trent's waist, with handcuffs attached to each side to keep his arms in place. The camera zoomed out and revealed that identical belts had already been locked onto his teammates.
"These things must weigh a hundred pounds!" Trent complained.
"120 pounds to be exact," Chris replied before slotting a metal detector onto his back.
"How is a metal detector supposed to help us find a chest?" Sierra asked in confusion.
"It's not," Chris smiled, taking out a red megaphone and shouting "Now GO! GO-GO-GO-GO-GO-GO!"
The Rats promptly ran off into the woods.
Confessional: Scott
"We're behind the Maggots and disadvantaged, and I'm going to keep it that way," Scott grinned.
Confessional Ends
The camera moved to a nondescript patch of ground somewhere, a muffled pounding sound coming from below it. Amy was then heard grunting in annoyance, and the scene cut inside her chest as she frantically pulled out a cellphone. "Chris and his crummy show can just burn to the ground," she complained as she started dialing.
A ringing came over the phone, and the screen split down the middle to show Chris answering on the left. "Hello~?" he opened with an almost mocking singsong voice.
"You've gone too far," Amy said. "You can't just-"
She was interrupted by a loud snore coming from within the coffin.
"Was that you?" Chris asked.
"No it wasn't," Amy responded. "This girl's a heavy snorer, and it's driving me nuts."
Chris shrugged as he stowed his phone back in his pocket. "I'm sure she's fine," he said to himself.
\
The scene moved to the Maggots, the four of them arriving at the edge of what the camera soon panned over to show was a massive swamp with smelly, bubbling green water dotted with toxic waste barrels.
Immediately the four began to cough. "This smells like gym socks and skunks in one big burrito," Molly griped.
"According to the map, there's a path around the swamp," Scarlett said, looking at the map in her hands, "but it'll take too long, though."
"We'll just have to go through the stink," Geoff shrugged.
"As long as the Rats don't follow us, I'll go along with it," Anne Maria said before they ran into the swamp.
\
A large purple dragonfly landed atop a stump in another part of the swamp. A pale purple frog sitting on a lilypad nearby promptly shot its tongue out at the dragonfly, only to yelp as the insect caught the tongue in its mouth and bit down hard.
The camera panned to the left, showing the edge of the swamp again as the Toxic Rats arrived.
"Ugh," Sierra immediately complained, her face scrunched up in disgust. "That smell is disgusting!"
"Smells like home," Scott sighed happily.
"We have no other choice. We have to go through here," Trent said.
"Now you're speaking my language," Scott smiled before the two ran through the swamp.
DJ and Sierra were about to jump in, but were stopped by Sammy holding them. "Why did you stop us, Sammy?" Sierra asked.
"You may or may not believe me before, but I need to tell you to vote Scott off if we lose," Sammy begged.
"Why do you want Scott gone?" DJ wondered.
"I've been thinking about it, and I eventually realized that Scott's the one who framed Leshawna," Sammy said. "And I also realized he's the one who paralyzed me with the seagull."
"Why would Scott do that?" DJ asked curiously.
"I don't know, but he's probably trying to sabotage us and pick us off one by one," Sammy replied.
"Scott did try to leave during the trivia challenge," Sierra remembered.
"Are you sure you're telling the truth?" DJ asked the cheerleader. "I wasn't on this team to start with."
"If you don't believe me when I say he's throwing the challenges, then just help me vote him off," Sammy pleaded.
"To be fair, he's super obnoxious and rude," Sierra considered. "I'll definitely vote for him next."
"So will I," DJ agreed. "Mama always taught me to stay away from negative influences." The three jumped into the swamp when their conversation ended.
The camera lingered after they left, just long enough to catch the the dragonfly from earlier buzzing out of the swamp still carrying the frog by its tongue.
\
The scene moved back to the Maggots, Molly and Geoff trailing behind their teammates.
"I say we dispose of Molly should we lose this round," Scarlett said to Anne Maria. "She's not the most supportive player here, and I know you don't want to separate from Geoff."
"Well, Molly hasn't left us behind again, and I'm not going to hold that over her," Anne Maria said, looking back at her map...and unwittingly walking up onto something rough and green and scaly.
She was cut off by an ominous growling below her, and looked down and ahead just as the small, beady eyes of an alligator rose above the surface of the swamp.
The mutant beast promptly reared up, revealing its long tusks, spines, and tentacle-like forelimbs and tossing both Anne Maria and the map into the water. She and Scarlett quickly went back and regrouped with Geoff and Molly, and all four screamed and ran forward just before the mutant alligator pounced onto the spot they'd just been standing in.
"We can hide in that tree!" Molly exclaimed, the camera following to a large tree in the swamp ahead of them. The four quickly ran over to it, Molly giving Scarlett a boost into it before scrambling into the branches herself.
"It's coming back!" Scarlett told them as Geoff pulled Anne Maria up into the tree next. The tanned girl looked back over her shoulder and gasped in fear as the shot quickly cut to the massive mutant swimming towards them, then roaring and pouncing. Anne Maria was pulled up just in time and the alligator slammed head-first into the tree's protruding roots. The whole tree shook, but the camera panned up to show that the Maggots had managed to hang on.
"You're a lifesaver, Party Hat," Anne Maria told the boy who'd pulled her up.
Confessional: Anne Maria
Whenever we're together, Geoff tends to act cool or dumb around me," Anne Maria stated to the camera. "And who can blame him? Check me out. The tan, the hair. Look at me, I'm hot!"
Confessional Ends
"We better leave before that thing wakes up," Anne Maria said, the camera panning up from a shot of the stunned mutant alligator lying at the base of the tree.
"Good idea," Geoff told her before dropping back down into the water. His teammates joined him, and the shot quickly focused on Anne Maria as she pulled out the tattered remains of the map.
"The map's ripped," she spoke.
"That's not a big deal," Molly told her. "We still have our compass, so we'll know where we're going."
"And lucky for us, I kept a hold of the compass," Scarlett said as she held up the object.
Confessional: Scarlett
"I let Anne Maria hold the map for us so if it got ripped, it'll give Molly a reason to try and convince Geoff to vote for me," Scarlett confessed. "Irresponsibility is a big factor as to why previous players got eliminated."
Confessional Ends
The static cut to the five Rats watching the alligator looking around from behind a tree.
"Okay," DJ said, "if we circle around a bit, we can avoid the alligator."
"I don't think we can avoid all of them," Sammy spoke nervously, drawing the team's attention behind the group to a pair of smaller, paler alligators that were swimming towards.
Sierra turned around and smiled confidently. "Don't worry, I'll take care of them," she said. "You guys go get that chest!"
"But-" Sammy said.
"Just go!" Sierra demanded, prompting her teammates to leave.
The two smaller alligators hissed menacingly while Sierra stood her ground and said "I'm not going out without a fight!" The two alligators pounced on her as she let out a scream.
\
"So which way do we go next?" Geoff asked his team.
Scarlett walked ahead a bit. "Moss grows on the northern side of trees and Chris said our goal is to the north, so we need to go that way," the brainiac pointed to the right.
The camera cut to the outskirts of a massive forest of thorn bushes. "We have to go through a thorn bush forest?" Geoff asked in shock and horror.
"Of course not. We go through there," Scarlett pointed to a route closer to the camera and around the thorns.
The Maggots shared a look of wide-eyed shock. "Okay, that's better," Anne Maria nodded.
She, Scarlett, Molly, and Geoff quickly ran off to the right.
\
A flash took the scene to the edge of a clearing with the thick thorn bush forest visible a little ways in the background. The Maggots arrived from the left, and immediately looked around.
"This clearing is just like the one on the map," Anne Maria said as the group moved further into the clearing and started digging.
The Rats were shown arriving later. "The Rats are already digging!" Scott complained.
"And where's Sierra?" Trent asked.
As if of cue, the obsessive uberfan -now sporting a black eye and tattered attire - arrived. "I told you I could fend them off," she woozily bragged. "They gave up after I lost most of my blood." She then passed out and fell near a rock that caused her metal detector to go off. DJ smiled and kicked the rock away to reveal a ring with two keys.
"Two keys?" DJ mused. "The small one must be for the cuffs!"
\
The footage skipped ahead to an unlocked penalty belt falling around DJ's feet. The camera panned up to show him and Sammy examining the other key.
"This one must be for the treasure chest," DJ said.
"Hey guys, I can feel Amy pounding below me!" Scott lied to his team. "We must dig here!"
"Got it," Sammy nodded.
As Sammy and DJ used their metal detectors to dig through the dirt, and Sierra still looking passed out, Scott dragged Trent to a distance away from the team.
"If I tell you something, do you promise to keep it a secret?" Scott whispered.
"Of course. What is it?" Trent pondered, to which Scott took out the invincibility statue. "The invincibility statue?"
"I still can't believe I found it," Scott said. "I looked up a tree and the statue was hidden in the leaves."
"And why are you showing me the statue now?" Trent wondered.
"I just wanted you to trust me," Scott followed up. "Our teammates are obviously going to vote for me, and if I use this, it'll cancel out the votes against me."
"I'm not ready for you to leave yet," Trent smiled. "Thanks for letting me know you'll be safe."
The shot cut to the Maggots digging their hole with Scarlett poking her head out. "The Rats are here, so we need to hurry!" she called out. "How deep did Chris bury them?"
"You don't need to worry about that anymore, because we just found the chest!" Molly said as the lid swung open and Amy quickly hopped out.
"That was insufferable to go through!" Amy panted before walking away from the scene.
"And the Maggots win," Chris called down to them all as he arrived in the helicopter.
With the exception of Scott, the Rats gasped in disappointment while in their hole. "You said you heard them here!" Sammy told the devious boy.
DJ pulled himself out of the hole and ran over to where the Maggots were standing. "Don't worry, Katie! I'll get you out of there!"
He jumped into the Maggots' hole and held Katie in his arms. "Katie! Are you fine? Please wake up!" he told her.
Katie's eyes began to open up, and when she saw DJ holding her, she smiled joyfully. "DJ? Is that you?"
Confessional: Katie
"If eating a lot of turkey makes me fall asleep and wake up into the arms of a really cute guy, I'm ordering 100 packs of turkey when I get home!" Katie confessed.
Confessional: Trent
"Scott told me to vote off DJ with him so we wouldn't be dealing with a threat," Trent admitted. "I don't want to do this to a past and current teammate, but Scott does bring up a good point."
Confessionals End
It was now night time, and after a brief focus on the moon accompanied by a hooting owl, the camera panned down to DJ and Katie sitting together on the steps of the Rats' cabin.
"Sorry you had to go through being buried underground like that," DJ talked to the perky influencer.
"Chris is very underhanded. I'll tell you that," Katie responded.
"I remember you telling me you liked me the day you got hurled out of the island," DJ smiled awkwardly.
"You do?!" Katie's eyebrows raised up.
"Yep, and I never got to respond to you about that," DJ said.
"Well, if you feel differently about what I-" Katie tried to say, but got cut off by DJ touching her lips with his own.
They kissed for a few seconds before they stopped, the two of them looking awkwardly happy.
"That was my way of saying I love you too," DJ said. "I'll have to talk to Mama about this, but once she approves, we can begin our relationship."
"Oh, definitely. I have to go now, but I want you to know I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines," Katie eagerly replied back before they hugged each other affectionately.
\
The scene flashed to a long-distance shot of the island. Another flash, and the camera cut to the campfire pit where the Rats - except for Sierra - were waiting nervously. Chris was in his oil drum podium bearing not a tray of marshmallows, but four slips of small, yellowed paper.
"Okay, players," Chris opened. "The votes are tallied. And by a tied vote, tonight's losers are none other than..."
"Wait," Trent interrupted. "Where are the marshmallows? And more importantly, where's Sierra."
"The marshmallows were eaten by a hungry me," Chris bragged, "and Sierra was deemed too injured and woozy from the alligator attack, so we had her evacuated from the game for good."
"Really?!" Sammy's eyes widened. "Aw. I hope she gets better soon."
"Regardless, I'm still carrying on with the ceremony," Chris continued and read from his slip. "The people with the same amount of votes are…"
Sammy looked at DJ nervously, and DJ took a look at Scott narrowing his eyes at them, to which Trent started feeling worried.
"DJ and Scott."
Trent gasped at the news while Scott looked taken back at first. The dirt farmer soon composed himself and said "Sorry. But I ain't going nowhere." Scott pulled out the statue and flipped it on his hand.
"What!?" Sammy yelped in surprise with DJ gaping as well.
"The invincibility statue! Nice! That means Scott is safe," Chris announced jovially. "This also means that the tiebreaker will be avoided, because tonight, thanks to Trent and Scott, DJ is going home!"
DJ was stunned to hear the news and looked down in disappointment.
"But... no hard feelings, dude. You will be missed," Chris reminded the eliminated contestant.
Trent stood up from his seat. "Sorry for eliminating you, but maybe a group hug can sort things out."
Scott and Sammy followed suit, and eventually, DJ, Sammy, Scott, and Trent were all embracing each other and hugging happily.
\
The scene cut to the docks, where DJ was on the Hurl of Shame as Chris and Chef watched on.
"Ready to fly, DJ?" Chris asked the gentle giant.
"The sooner I'm out of here, the sooner I can talk to Mama about Katie," DJ confirmed, and then, without warning, he was sent flying into the night with a scream.
The camera panned to Chris as he faced the camera with his usual smiling demeanor as the usual cymbal beats opened the series' capstone theme. "And that's another loser out of the game. Come back for even more painful awesomeness, next time, on Total! Drama! Revenge, of the Island!"

I had to write this out to start my own deconstruction anyway, but giving it to my spouse will be interesting. Read it if you want. Critique it if you want. I just had to get this out into the universe.

  1. The concept that the Church can lie to you
    1. Rather than being told the entire truth about Joseph Smith’s death, we are told that he is innocent of any crime and that he went to deliver himself up. The truth of the matter is, Joseph Smith was in jail for destroying the property of William Law, who was creating a newspaper called the Nauvoo Expositor. He ordered the printing press be destroyed and violated the first amendment, as well as destroying another’s property. The newspaper exposed polygamy and many of the other immoralities of the Church. On the surface, this lie doesn’t seem egregious, but D&C 135 section mentions that Joseph was a martyr for the religion, and I was always taught this. However, he didn’t deliver himself up to be killed and it wasn’t because he was a “mormon”; it was because he broke the law and had angered a mob. All of this was a direct result of him practicing polygamy and yielding so much power.
    2. The method of translating the Book of Mormon was largely misrepresented to me as a youth, missionary, and young adult. I was always taught, whether through art or articles, that Joseph used the Gold Plates to translate the Book of Mormon.
    3. However, upon widespread discovery of further quotes and scrutiny, in 2014 the Church admitted that the translation was done through a rock and a hat. This is justified by quoting the Book of Mormon where it talks about bringing forth a stone to shine forth in the darkness. (Alma 37:23-24). The methods of translation accounts differ from each other. Martin Harris saying they were done by sitting across the table. Oliver Cowdery saying it was done by the urim and thummim or two stones and spectacles. To be clear, I am okay with some ambiguity surrounding the translation, or it being by the power of God. What I’m not okay with is the church deceiving how it was done until the internet era forced them to release the Gospel Topic Essays on this subject.
    4. The implementation of polygamy. a. Left ambiguous for a reason. How Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff, Heber C. Kimball and many other high ranking church members took many wives including teenage wives. The church’s essay on this topic refers to Helen Mar Kimball, a 14 year old, as “several months before her 15th birthday.” In fact, they even say that Helen said it was for “eternity alone” but that is an out of context poem from Helen’s journal. There is no proof of sexual relations, but there are proof in many other relatoinships, including Fanny Alger, Joseph’s first “wife” that Oliver Cowdery called a filthy affair. He was excommunicated partly due to that statement. b. Joseph Smith wrote a letter to 19-year old Nancy Rigdon propositioning her to marry him after she denied his appeal in 1842. This letter is quoted in General Conference many times over the years, “Happiness is the object and design of our existence, and will be the end thereof if we pursue the path that leads to it; and this path is virtue, uprightness, faithfulness, holiness, and keeping all the commandments of God.” He then goes on to tell her that we cannot obey the commandments if we don’t know them and what seems wrong, can actually be right in certain circumstances. He quotes the times God has contradicted Himself in the scriptures. This letter is gross. Note that it comes right before the plural marriage revelation D&C 132. c. Joseph claimed that an angel with a drawn sword made him marry Zina Huntington Jacobs, despite her engagement to Henry Jacobs. He sent Henry on missions. She did stay faithful and was eventually sealed to Brigham Young, who also subsequently sent Henry Jacobs on missions. d. This doesn’t even take into account the actions of preceeding prophets who were married to dozens of women, sealed to hundreds, and many of them were underage. Wilford Woodruff for instance sealed himself to a 6 year old girl who had passed away, inexplicably. Maybe he didn’t know? Maybe he did? Who knows.
    5. D&C 132- Joseph Smith was sealed to over 20 wives before being sealed to Emma. He denied being polygamous publicly multiple times and the relief society (of which, Emma was president) wrote a letter condemning polygamy, while one of the presidency members was sealed to Joseph.
      1. Law of Sarah was violated before it was ever implemented
      2. Joseph performing a second marriage to the Whitney sisters after Emma approved it.
      3. Women must be virgins, while Joseph was married to other married women (at least 2).
      4. Abraham was not commanded by God to practice plural marriage, he was asked by Sarah to marry Hagoth because Sarah was barren.
      5. Additionally, Jacob condemns polygamy in the Book of Mormon but then God okays it in the D&C 132, both of them specifically citing the examples of Soloman and David.
      6. Plural marriage is the “new and everlasting covenant” implying that plural marriage in the celestial kingdom will be the new and everlasting covenant and required.
      7. 5. Historicity of the Book of Abraham There is an entire Gospel Topics Essay on this but the background is as follows. A guy named Michael Chandler shows up in Kirland with mummies and a bunch of scrolls. They were unearthed by Napoleon’s raiding of the Egyptian catacombs. Joseph believes that they are scrolls that contained writings of Abraham. He begins translation in 1835 and publishes it in May of 1842. The odds that these mummies, coming from a salesman who had a lot to gain, containing the written word of Abraham has always seemed really fortunate. In the Pearl of Great Price, the heading says they are penned by “the hand of Abraham” but according to scholars in and out of the church, they were written much later. “These fragments date to between the third century B.C.E. and the first century C.E., long after Abraham lived.” Not only is it not written by Abraham’s hand, it is also not anything to do with Abraham. In Joseph’s time, the Rosetta Stone had not been widely discovered. He began translating this book and now, experts know that these are standard funerary texts. The Facsimiles (pictures) have nothing to do with the sacrifice of Abraham. Everyone virtually agrees that what is on the remains of the scroll (most of which was lost in the Chicago fire but then recovered), is not what Joseph translated. This casts a large shadow of doubt on Joseph’s ability to translate. The Church is admitting that Joseph translated incorrectly. The only way to reconcile this is that Joseph used these scrolls to channel the Spirit to record what is in the Book of Abraham today. The doctrines in Abraham largely expand on the Genesis story but go deeper in doctrines about plurality of Gods and the creation of the universe and stars. Some of this goes against the Book of Mormon’s view of God. The Authenticity of the Book of Mormon
      8. This is arguably the largest domino that needs to stay in place. Here are a few quotes demonstrating the absolute necessity of the Book of Mormon being an authentic history of the peoples on this continent.
      9. The Book of Mormon is God’s compelling witness of the divinity of Jesus Christ, the prophetic calling of Joseph Smith, and the absolute truth of this Church.” - Tad R. Callister
      10. The Book of Mormon is the most important religious text to be revealed from God to man ‘since the writings of the New Testament were compiled nearly two millennia ago.’ Joseph Smith declared the Book of Mormon to be “the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion.” It is the only book that the Lord Himself has testified to be true.” - President Nelson
      11. I testify that one cannot come to full faith in this latter-day work—and thereby find the fullest measure of peace and comfort in these, our times—until he or she embraces the divinity of the Book of Mormon and the Lord Jesus Christ, of whom it testifies…and if he or she leaves this Church, it must be done by crawling over or under or around the Book of Mormon to make that exit. In that sense the book is what Christ Himself was said to be: “a stone of stumbling, … a rock of offence,” a barrier in the path of one who wishes not to believe in this work.” - Jeffrey R. Holland.
      12. "All that we have, all that we do hinge on the truth of that account of the boy Joseph Smith. If it is true, then everything that we have in this Church is true and is more precious and worth more than anything else on earth. If it is false, we are engaged in the greatest fraud that was ever perpetrated on earth.” - Gordon B Hinckley
      13. So with all that being said, this is my biggest stumbling block. I will begin with my own issues with the book that happened long before I was ever introduced to anything outside of approved Church material.
      14. The Sermon on the Mount given to the Nephites in 3 Nephi matches almost exactly to the one given in Matthew, with slight changes. He sets up a church similar to the one set up with Peter. But, the only issue is years later, Joseph Smith writes the JST and corrects different things in the Matthew version of the Sermon. But, if the Book of Mormon is the most correct book on earth, wouldn’t the writings have been exactly what the Savior meant?
      15. 2 Nephi 3 - Book of Mormon writes Joseph into the text relating a prophecy given to Joseph in Egypt, saying that a choice seer will be raised up and he will be named the Joseph after his father. 2 Nephi 3: 14-16
      16. There is a huge time lapse between Jarom and Omni to get us into Mosiah. 399 BC to 130 BC. The prophets basically write nothing and it seems like it’s just a transition to get to Mosiah.
      17. Ammon chopping off a ton of arms and all the people bring them to the king. The story of Ammon in general is crazy. The King is struck down for 3 days and his wife thinks he is dead. Then, Ammon converts this king who then goes and rescues Ammon’s brothers from another king.
      18. Other direct copies from the New Testament and Paul specifically found in the Book of Mormon. Moroni 7 is basically the same phrasing and concepts taught in 1 Corinthians 13. 2 Nephi 4:17 says “O wrteched man that I am” matches exactly to Romans 7:24.
      19. Alma the Younger’s story mirrors Paul the apostles history almost exactly. Both are destroying the church, get struck down by an Angel, go on to become amazing missionaries and even both appear before King’s and wicked people.
      20. The concepts taught in the Book of Mormon are basically christian. They are practicing Christianity as soon as middle of Mosiah, which is like 100BC. They are baptizing and confirming with the Holy Ghost. However, since Christ hadn’t fulfilled the law of Moses and they should’ve been practicing the Mosaic law. The book contains basically zero Mosaic and Hebrew traditions, which Lehi and his family would have been sharply familiar with. Instead, they practice Christianity before Jesus had even been born or practiced the Atonement.
      21. Joseph Smith almost never quotes from it. In fact, I’ve searched and searched and only found him reference it maybe once or twice. If this book is so important, shouldn’t it had been quoted from extensively. It doesn’t become a huge focus until basically the 1980s with Ezra Taft Benson started “flooding the earth with the Book of Mormon.” I’ve read Brigham Young’s entire Discourses of Brigham Young and he rarely mentions the Book of Mormon. While this proves very little, it just intensifies the idea to me that Joseph wrote it and did not consider it authentic scripture, even for himself.
      22. King Zedekiah Problem - The timeline of when Nephi left Jerusalem in the reign of King Zedekiah in preparation for the destruction of Jerusalem. But, King Nebuchednezzar had already invaded Judah twice by 599BC., two years prior to the Book of Mormon. He then Installed Zedekiah (formerly known as Mattaniah) as King of Jerusalem (2 Kings 24:11-18). So what does this mean?
      23. I will leave out the potential influences here because I do not think they are helpful nor likely to be true source material for the Book of Mormon. I think they are largely speculation and created just to create doubt without much validity or true sources. Do we know if Joseph accessed these works? Not really. But, it’s possible. There are a myriad of other problems with the Book of Mormon when examined scientifically, but that doesn’t really bother me so much. The church has an essay on DNA of Israelites not being in “Lamanite” or native american blood, despite many church leaders preaching that for years. It’s even included in the Book of Mormon title page until like 2006 or something. Additionally, Joseph Smith almost never quotes or teaches from the Book of Mormon. If it’s the most correct book of any on the earth, why is he not basing his sermons off these stories and scriptures?
      24. The Book of Mormon require that 3 key events from the Bible be literal events: a global flood in the times of Noah that covered the entire earth, Adam and Eve in the garden, and different languages occuring because God cursed people at the Tower of Babel.
      25. When I read the Book of Mormon, if I view it from a purely protestant view, it matches up doctrinally. In fact, it matches more purely with a presbyterian or methodist view of the atonement and doctrines (including the original trinitarian concepts taught in the Book before changes by Joseph Smith in 1837, eight years after the Book of Mormon was published and his first vision account that mentions God and Jesus being separate beings)
      26. The Charles Anthon Story is posed as a faith promoting story and prophecy fulfillment of Isaiah 29:11-12, where the learned wouldn’t be able to read a sealed book. So here’s the Church Narrative as found in JSH.
      27. Once i take off my believing member hat and look at this story objectively, it looks to me like complete and total BS. I am honestly insulted that this was taught and passed off to me as some amazing prophecy of Isaiah that was passed on to me.
Disavowed teachings and behavior of former prophets and leaders.
  1. Brigham Young
    1. Adam-God theory was taught in the temple and considered straight doctrine by the “prophet” Brigham Young.
    2. Blood Atonement was also taught in the early Utah days
    3. Brigham taught that no man can receive the highest exaltation without taking on extra wives.
    4. Brigham young definitely was in approval (either before or after) of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which is the slaughtering of innocent immigrants heading west. They luckily spared the smallest children and raised them Mormon. He scapegoated John D Lee who suffered the death penalty, despite being rewarded with “wives” by Brigham Young prior to that. Hmmmm
  2. Blacks and the Priesthood
    1. So so so many quotes could go under here talking about how black people would never receive priesthood or temple covenants. The list could go on. I don’t need to repeat them all but in the Gospel Topics Essays, the Church disavows all racist teachings from the past.
    2. Book of Mormon and Abraham still talk about the curse of dark skin. The Lamanites are cursed but then will become “white and delightsome” as they repent (according to Spencer W. Kimball)
    3. How many prophets were completely wrong on this topic? Even after the Civil Rights movement which was going on 15 years earlier. The Church always seeems to be a step behind.
  3. Polygamy
    1. Again, I could write a book on how much early leaders emphasized the heavenly requirement for a man to have multiple wives.
    2. Wilford Woodruff was sealed to like a 200 something wives on his birthday, including a six year old who had passed away. This can be found on FamilySearch
    3. The leaders of the Church didn’t stop practicing polygamy until around 1910, which is 20 years after the Manifesto, forced upon them by the US Government. This policy change wasn’t inspiration — to was a matter of the Mormons keeping their stuff or not.
  4. Science
    1. Age of the Earth — Joseph Smith says that the earth has a temporal existence of 7,000 years before it will receive it’s eternal glory. This was a common thought back then and ties back into the Old Testament timeline. I was taught this in Seminary. Going back to Adam and Seth, then to Abraham and to modern day. It all lines up so that the Second Coming will be happening soon.
    2. Adam + Eve — This one is very hard for me to get past because the proof is indisputable: human life did not begin 6,000 years ago by two human beings. There was physical death long before it was introduced by the partaking of the forbidden fruit. It is fact. To deny it would be like denying that the Earth is round or orbits the Sun. So is this an allegory? Well Joseph Smith down to current general authorities have taught that this is LITERAL. The temple clearly emphasizes this. This is something BIG to get wrong. Considering Joseph Smith taught that it happened in the garden of Eden which was in Missouri.
    3. Noah’s Ark — This has to be literal as it is in the Book of Mormon as a fact. It’s also been “revealed” to have been a literal, global flood that covered the earth and cleansed the earth of all inhabitants. We also have doctrine in our church that says modern day revelation has confirmed this fact. But, this “story” is largely based on the Babylonian tale “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” It was recorded before the Hebrew Bible recorded the tale of Noah. The stories are earily similar and there are so many throughout other cultures of a great flood. Maybe that makes it more likely? Or maybe it was just a prevailing thought in that time period. Either way, scientific evidence knows that Noah’s Ark never happened because a huge flood never happened. And ask yourself, how in the world would they get all the animals on a boat? Is this really realistic?
    4. Tower of Babel — This is the genesis of the Jaredites. The Lord was confounding the language of the people, so the Brother of Jared goes and asks that they are spared. Eventually they are led to the Americas (which has a host of other problems). But, this story has to be literal because that’s exactly what’s happening in the Jaredite civilization to lead them to cross the ocean. But language evolved over tens of thousands of years and had nothing to do with a tower in around 2500 BC.
    5. Evolution — This fact goes along with Adam and Eve. Modern day prophets have disavowed this fact. In fact, Joseph Fielding Smit said “If evolution is true, the church is false” in Doctrines of Salvation, which was written while he was the prophet.

  1. Sexual Assault Cover Ups - This one is pretty self explanatory. There are hundreds of occasions and the most recent ones in the news are pretty disgusting. The fact that the Church didn’t report, and had systems in place to protect itself rather than the victims, makes me sick.
  2. First Vision Accounts - In many Church media films and the way I was taught at a young age, Joseph had the first vision and then was mocked by the people of Palmyra for believing in visions. I had not idea that this was not the case. In fact, Joseph never wrote anything down until 1832. The accounts from 1832, 1835, 1838, and 1842 paint a picture of someone who was expanding, molding, and letting this vision evolve. The reasons why he went out to pray in the trees changes. First, it’s to receive a remission of his sins. He also says in that account that he’s already concluded that the church’s of his day are fallen. Then it evolves. He also says the Lord appears. Then it’s angels. Then it’s the Lord and His Father. He mentions that it had never entered his heart that they were all wrong in the Canonized JSH we have in the Pearl of Great Price. But, then he says he already knew they were wrong in earlier versions? In fact, Asa Wild and Norris Stearns have visions in 1815 and 1823 in the same area as Joseph Smith and the verbiage used is similar. Norris Stearns says, “At length, as I lay apparently upon the brink of eternal woe, seeing nothing but death before me, suddenly there came a sweet flow of the love of God to my soul, which gradually increased. At the same time, there appeared a small gleam of light in the room, above the brightness of the sun, then at his meridian, which grew brighter and brighter: As this light and love increased, my sins began to separate, and the Mountain [of sin] removed towards the east. At length, being in an ecstasy of joy, I turned to the other side of the bed, (whether in the body or out I cannot tell, God knoweth) there I saw two spirits, which I knew at the first sight. But if I had the tongue of an Angel I could not describe their glory, for they brought the joys of heaven with them. One was God, my Maker, almost in bodily shape like a man. His face was, as it were a flame of Fire, and his body, as it had been a Pillar and a Cloud. In looking steadfastly to discern features, I could see none, but a small glimpse would appear in some other place. Below him stood Jesus Christ my Redeemer, in perfect shape like a man-His face was not ablaze, but had the countenance of fire, being bright and shining. His Father’s will appeared to be his! All was condescension, peace, and love!”
Ultimately, all of these issues paint a picture, right? The character flaws and mistranslations of Joseph Smith, along with the setting in which he was raised all take away from his prophetic ability. There are more issues that I haven’t even touched on. LGBT issues, the treatment of women, the kinderhook plates, etc. There are more issues touched on in the CES Letter. But, these are things that stick in my mind when I try to imagine believing the Church is true again.
I believe Joseph Smith started writing the Book of Mormon to make money. Then, when it got close to publishing, he decided to start a religion. With the help of Sidney Rigdon, the Church grew and he introduced different aspects of "the Restoration" and eventually the power went to his head.
Being "prophet" brought him three things key for cult leaders. Money. Sex. Power. He got his living taken care of and people built him a house. He had around 40 polygamous wives and preyed on underage girls. He was dubbed king of the world by the Council of the 50 and was Mayor of Nauvoo.
How can I conclude anything other than him being a cult leader? This barely even touches on Brigham and the subsequent prophets that made huge mistakes.

2023.06.09 22:46 UninspiredCharacters Think I May Or May Not Be A Demi-Boy, Need Advice.

Hey all, I am a 16 y/o AFAB. For the past 6 months or so I've been questioning my gender.
Throughout my life, I've always felt as if I was more masculine than other girls. During my childhood, I often wished that I would have a deeper voice when I grew older, and had more male friends in general due to me having more "masculine" interests(though that could be attributed to me growing up with other males). When I was 12, I completely stopped wearing dresses/skirts since it felt "wrong" for someone like me to wear them. Going forward, I have referred to myself as a male in my mind, often felt as if my mind was that of a man, fantasized about being male, being happy whenever someone said I was a tomboy(ignoring the tom part and just focusing on the boy part), even asking my female classmates on what if they were born a male. At the time though these were all just "jokes" to me.
So I know that what I described would be a typical trans male experience, but I don't think it's as simple as that. Even though I do lean more towards a masculine mind, I feel as if I still have some "feminine" traits. I still want to keep my long straight hair, don't plan on having any bottom surgery since there's multiple risks, and I still want to dress in a feminine way at times(though no dresses/skirts). Basically, I want people to look at me and think I'm male, however still have some ambiguity as to what my actual gender is.
I resonated strongly with being a demi-boy, rather than with genderfluid since I do not feel as if I am a girl and instead fluctuate between being a boy and non-binary. For now I have come out to 2 of my friends and told them to use he/they pronouns just to see how things work out, but I also have this sense of feeling that I will regret this in the future. I'm still 16 which is typically the age that teens are still trying to figure themselves out, so I'm scarred that this will just be a phrase. I'm scarred that I'm just an impostor of some sort since I don't have a strong sense of dysphoria with my bottom genitals and am not currently seeking any hormonal treatment or surgery due to the risks and stories I've been reading about.
So yeah, that's my situation. I would appreciate any comments/advice about what I'm dealing with currently.

2023.06.09 22:43 JoshAsdvgi THE SACRED PIPE OF THE T'SALAGI

THE SACRED PIPE OF THE T'SALAGI

THE SACRED PIPE OF THE T'SALAGI

Most all Nations have stories about the 'Sacred Pipe'.
What many people refer to it as The Peace Pipe.
Which is an incorrect Hollywood thought shown in the old west movies and cartoons.
The Sacred Pipe is to the Native Americans as the cross is to Christian cultures.

The pipe, in one form or another, has come to most cultures around the world.
Every group has used the pipe in one way or another and has stories of how they came to have it.
The Lakota tell the story of the White Buffalo woman and how she first brought the pipe to them.
Just as the T'salagi have this story.

It is not important how the pipe first arrived.
Or who it came to first as all nations see themselves as the first to have this gift from creator.
What is important is that the pipe is revered as a sacred item and also important is that it did come from The Creator.
What is most important is that pipe was brought to all men of this world, for we all must share this world......

Long ago, but not long after the world was new, a tribe of red skinned people came to live on the lands which are around The Blue Smoke Mountains.
At this time, the animals of the world still talked to men and taught them how to live on and care for the land.
These people were called "Ani Yun Wiya" or the One True People.
In this tribe lived a brave warrior woman.
She was called 'Arrow Woman'.
Arrow Woman was taught to use the bow, the spear and the knife.
Even though it was a man's job to hunt and fight,
Arrow Woman could shoot straighter with the bow than any man, she could throw the knife so as split a branch no bigger than your thumb and she could throw the spear into eye of a hawk in flight.
Because of all this, no man would tell her to be like a woman.
One day while on a hunt,
Arrow Woman came upon the tracks of Yona the bear.
She saw blood on the ground and knew him to be wounded so she followed his tracks.
High into the mountains she followed.
Soon she came to a place that she did not know.
It was in this place, a place known only to the animals that she finally saw Yona the bear.
He had a deep cut in his side and she saw him bowing down in prayer.
She saw him bowing toward a large field of tall grass and speaking words that she had not heard before.
Suddenly, the grass shimmered and became a lake.
Arrow Woman saw Yona dive into the water.
After a time he emerged from the water, his side was completely healed.
Yona then saw Arrow Woman and walked to her.
Yona told her, "this is the sacred lake of the animals.
It is called, 'Atagahi' and it's location is known only to the animals.
It is where we come for healing and strength.
You are the first human creature to see the sacred lake.
You must never tell your kind of it's location for it is the home of 'The Great Uktena'.
With these words Yona the Bear turned and walked into the woods and disappeared.
Arrow Woman was tired after following Yona all day so she decided to rest a while by this lake.
She built a small fire and sat down to eat a meal that she had brought with her.
She took a drink of the water from the lake and felt instantly refreshed.
She was amazed, she felt strong as Yan'si the Buffalo.
She felt as if she run faster than Coga the Raven could fly.
The woods were quiet, Unole the wind was sleeping, Nvda the sun was shining bright but was not hot, the surface of the lake was completely calm, Arrow Woman began to get sleepy.
It was at this time that she saw 'Uktena', she had been told of him when she was a child but no one in her tribe ever claimed to have seen him.
High above the water he raised his great serpent's head, the jewel in his forehead glistening.
He began to move toward her.
Arrow Woman grabbed up her spear and stood up to face the great creature coming to her, standing proud, showing no fear, the way any warrior should.
She raised her spear and prepared to strike the huge beast.
Uktena stopped a short distance from her.
He smiled, his mouth was larger than a man was tall and full of teeth longer than man's forearm.
He spoke to the brave woman on the bank of his lake.
To her he said, "Put down your weapons for I mean you no harm.
I come only to teach." Arrow Woman laid down her spear and began to relax, somehow knowing Uktena spoke truly.
Uktena told her to sit and to listen.
Uktena dipped his head below the surface and came back up a moment later.
In his mouth he had a strangely crooked stick and a leather pouch.
These things he laid on the ground in front of Arrow Woman.
Then the Great Uktena began to teach.
He said,"This that I have laid before you is the Sacred Pipe of The Creator."
He then told her to pick up the pipe.
"The bowl is of the same red clay The Creator used to make your kind.
The red clay is Woman kind and is from the Earth.
Just as a woman bears the children and brings forth life, the bowl bears the sacred tobacco (tsula) and brings forth smoke.
The stem is Man.
Rigid and strong the stem is from the plant kingdom and like a man it supports the bowl just as man supports his family."

Uktena then showed Arrow Woman how to join the bowl to the stem saying, "
Just as a man and a woman remain separate until joined in marriage so too are the bowl and stem separate.
Never to be joined unless the pipe is used."
Uktena then showed her how place the sacred tsula into the pipe and with an ember from the fire lit the tsula so it burned slightly.
He told her this, "The smoke is the breath of The Creator, When you draw the smoke into your body, you will be cleansed and made whole.
When the smoke leaves your mouth, it will rise to The Creator. Your prayers, your dreams, your hopes and desires will be taken to Him in the smoke.
Also the truth in your soul will be shown to Him when you smoke the pipe.
If you are not true, do not smoke the pipe.
If your spirit is bad and you seek to deceive, do not smoke the pipe."

Uktena continued his lesson well into the night teaching Arrow Woman all of the prayers used with the pipe and all of the reasons for using the pipe.
He finished just as the moon was beginning her nightly journey across the sky in search of her true love.
He told Arrow Woman to wrap the pipe in cloth, keeping the parts separate.
With this done He told her that she would never again be able to find this place but to remember all that she had learned. Uktena then returned to depths of the lake.
Arrow Woman saw the water shimmer and become again the field of grass.
She left, taking with her the pipe and her lessons and a wondrous tale.

Ever since that time,
The Ani Yun Wiya have used the sacred pipe and never again has any man seen the sacred lake of Uktena.
The pipe is not a symbol of things that are sacred.
The pipe itself is sacred.
Not everyone is called upon to be a pipe bearer.
The person who carries the pipe and practices the pipe ceremonies and traditions has a great responsibility to his brothers and sisters, his land and country and even to the Earth Mother.
The pipe bearer does not 'own' the pipe he carries.
He simply carries the pipe until the time comes for him to pass it to the next bearer.
The pipe bearer is given certain powers of sight from the pipe as well as an ability to heal and purify.
Should the bearer fall from grace and become a liar, thief, neglected his duties when asked, or become deceitful, the pipe would repossess these gifts and then the possibility of misfortune for the former bearer may exist.
One should be ready to accept the responsibility of the pipe for it may make demands upon you.
It will become your teacher and guide. It can also be your worst enemy if used wrongly. I leave it to you to decide if these words are truly said.

This is the way that I have learned.

2023.06.09 22:42 evacipated Looking for one of Scott's doodles

Hi everyone
I'm close to getting that FR tattoo I've told myself I'd get for years, but I can't find the specific drawing I want and I have no idea where I'd find it. Is there anyone out there that might be able to help? It's a little bird in a pocket with the cross on it. Please see my professional recreation for reference.
Thanks!

2023.06.09 22:40 FacelessFlesh Two sheathing animations playing sequentially

I've been attempting to set up a new modlist, and when attempting to sheathe and unsheathe weapons, my character will perform two different animations in succession: initially using those of my chosen mod (Extra Drawing Animations) and then following it up with another (which I think is from Simple Dual Sheathe? Or potentially Immersive Equipment Displays? I'm not sure)
Has anyone else dealt with similar issues? I'm not exactly sure how to counter the issue if I can't override the unwanted animation.
Modlist is as follows, as provided by MO2 (Which inverts the modlist for some reason):
